Histologic characterization of human scarred vocal folds.

Vocal fold scarring remains a significant problem. Although several animal models have been developed to improve our understanding of the histopathology, the histologic features of scarred human vocal folds have rarely been reported. The present case studies aimed to define the histologic changes of scarred human vocal folds caused by cordectomy or cordotomy. Ten patients with the scarred vocal folds were involved in this study. Nine patients with early glottic cancer underwent endoscopic cordectomy, and one patient underwent superficial cordotomy for idiopathic scar. The postcordectomy or cor

Medialisation laryngoplasty with bone wax in a sheep model.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and biocompatibility of bone wax as an implant material for medialisation laryngoplasty in a large animal model. METHODS: Three Dorper-cross ewes underwent type I thyroplasty of the right vocal fold with bone wax. The animals were monitored for four weeks for general wellbeing. The animals were euthanised and the larynges harvested. Histological evaluation was performed to assess for adverse tissue reaction and biocompatibility. RESULTS: The mean (± standard deviation) amount of bone wax implanted was 0.49 g (± 0.12 g). No adverse events were reported. Ex vi

In-flight brainstem responses highlight the encoding of self-emitted echolocation calls in bats.

Echolocating bats rely on precise auditory processing to navigate and forage in complete darkness. A critical aspect of this behaviour is the neural encoding of self-generated vocalizations, which allows for accurate comparison with returning echoes. In this study, we introduce a non-invasive method for recording auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) in awake, flying big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus). Using a custom 3D-printed harness that enables sustained in-place flight, we simultaneously recorded electroencephalographic and acoustic signals from freely vocalizing animals. Self-emitted echolo

The histologic fate of autologous collagen injected into the canine vocal fold.

Collagen is a functionally essential component of the five-layered structure of the vocal fold. Soluble bovine collagen has previously been shown to be an effective injectable bioimplant for vocal fold defects, paralysis, and, especially, scarred larynges. Although bovine collagen appears to be well tolerated, the concern for possible adverse immunologic responses has deterred approval from the Food and Drug Administration for its clinical use in the larynx. Currently we are investigating the use of injectable autologous collagen for vocal fold augmentation. The purpose of this study is to exa

Pygmy mouse songs reveal anatomical innovations underlying acoustic signal elaboration in rodents.

Elaborate animal communication displays are often accompanied by morphological and physiological innovations. In rodents, acoustic signals used in reproductive contexts are produced by two distinct mechanisms, but the underlying anatomy that facilitates such divergence is poorly understood. 'Audible' vocalizations with spectral properties between 500 Hz and 16 kHz are thought to be produced by flow-induced vocal fold vibrations, whereas 'ultrasonic' vocalizations with fundamental frequencies above 19 kHz are produced by an aerodynamic whistle mechanism. Baiomyine mice (genus Baiomys and Scotin

Individual vocal signatures in barn owl nestlings: does individual recognition have an adaptive role in sibling vocal competition?

To compete over limited parental resources, young animals communicate with their parents and siblings by producing honest vocal signals of need. Components of begging calls that are sensitive to food deprivation may honestly signal need, whereas other components may be associated with individual-specific attributes that do not change with time such as identity, sex, absolute age and hierarchy. In a sib-sib communication system where barn owl (Tyto alba) nestlings vocally negotiate priority access to food resources, we show that calls have individual signatures that are used by nestlings to rec

Chronic vocal fold scar restoration with hepatocyte growth factor hydrogel.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Therapeutic challenges exist in the management of vocal fold scarring. We have previously demonstrated the therapeutic potential of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) in the management of acute phase vocal fold scarring using a novel hydrogel-based HGF drug delivery system (DDS). However, the effect of HGF on matured vocal fold scarring remains unclear. The current study aims to investigate the effect of HGF-DDS on chronic vocal fold scarring using a canine model. STUDY DESIGN: Animal model. METHODS: Vocal folds from eight beagles were unilaterally scarred by stripping the

Histologic and rheologic characterization of vocal fold scarring.

Scarring of the vocal fold causes considerable dysphonia and presents significant treatment challenges. A rabbit model was developed to investigate the histologic ultrastructure and rheologic properties of the scarred vocal fold lamina propria. Eleven rabbit larynges were scarred by means of forcep biopsy. Sixty days postoperatively, the rabbits were sacrificed and their vocal folds were harvested. Histological analysis of the scarred and normal lamina propria was completed for collagen, procollagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. Linear viscoelastic shear properties of the tissues were also me

The many functions of vocal learning.

The capacity to learn novel vocalizations has evolved convergently in a wide range of species. Courtship songs of male birds or whales are often treated as prototypical examples, implying a sexually selected context for the evolution of this ability. However, functions of learned vocalizations in different species are far more diverse than courtship, spanning a range of socio-positive contexts from individual identification, social cohesion, or advertising pair bonds, as well as agonistic contexts such as territorial defence, deceptive alarm calling or luring prey. Here, we survey the diverse

Pathological changes of hyperphonated cat vocal folds.

To investigate the pathological changes of hyperphonated vocal folds 15 cats were used and over-cry was induced by mechanical stimuli. The longest experiment time was 15 weeks. All of the larynges were taken and the vocal folds were examined grossly and microscopically. The results were as follows: 1) liquid exudate accumulation beneath the epithelium developed in all of the experimental animals; 2) thickening of the epithelium was noticed in cats which had hyperphonated for more than 4 weeks; 3) acute laryngitis occurred in three cats.

Maturation of Social-Vocal Communication in Prairie Vole (Microtus ochrogaster) Pups.

Impairments in social communication are common among neurodevelopmental disorders. While traditional animal models have advanced our understanding of the physiological and pathological development of social behavior, they do not recapitulate some aspects where social communication is essential, such as biparental care and the ability to form long-lasting social bonds. Prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) have emerged as a valuable rodent model in social neuroscience because they naturally display these behaviors. Nonetheless, the role of vocalizations in prairie vole social communication remai

Maladaptive Alterations of Defensive Response Following Developmental Complex Stress in Rats.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the etiological significance of complex developmental trauma in adult personality disorders and treatment-resistant depression, neurobiological studies have been rare due to the lack of useful animal models. As a first step, we devised an animal model to investigate the effects of multiple trauma-like stress during different developmental periods. METHODS: Twenty-one male Sprague-Dawley rats were classified into 3 groups based on the stress protocol: fear conditioning control (FCC, n = 6), complex stress (ComS, n = 9), and control (n = 6). While the ComS experienced three t

Modification in activity of medullary respiratory-related neurons for vocalization and swallowing.

1. The medullary ventral respiratory group (VRG) in and near the nucleus ambiguus contains neurons related to respiration. Also found here are neurons related to vocalization and swallowing as well as motoneurons of laryngeal, pharyngeal, palatal, and esophageal muscles. Previous reports in anesthetized animals have characterized discharge properties of neurons as they relate to a single behavior, e.g., respiration. Relatively few studies have documented discharge properties during more than one behavior, e.g., respiration and swallowing. Neurons were recorded extracellularly from awake Macaca

A functional evaluation of ansa cervicalis nerve transfer for unilateral vocal cord paralysis: future directions for laryngeal reinnervation.

There are a variety of methods for treating unilateral vocal cord paralysis, but to date there are few objective studies that evaluate the functional results of nerve transfer from the ansa cervicalis. Six dogs underwent unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve section with immediate reanastamosis to the sternothyroid branch of the ansa cervicalis. After 5 to 6 months, measurements of vocal efficiency and acoustic parameters, videolaryngoscopy, videostroboscopy, and evoked electromyography were performed. Identical measurements were made in eight control dogs during normal electrically induced pho

Dark Triad Traits Affect the Perception of Emotions in Animal Calls.

Humans can recognize emotions from vocalisations of various animal species. Our study examined whether human psychological differences in dark personality traits (as measured by SD3) and musician experience affect the decoding of emotions in animal calls. Respondents assessed the situation and the valence and intensity of emotion experienced by the animal in calls of piglets recorded in three social and one painful situation. With increasing psychopathy scores, individuals made more misclassification errors between social and painful calls and also perceived the social calls as more negative.

Situational factors, conditions and individual variables which can determine ultrasonic vocalizations in male adult Wistar rats.

The fact that rats emit different types of ultrasonic vocalizations in a variety of contexts has received increasing experimental attention, since such calls might serve as indices of the animal's subjective state, and/or as social signals in various types of interactions with other rats. Here, we present two experiments in adult male Wistar rats where we tested several different situations and conditions with respect to the occurrence of high-frequency (50-kHz) and low-frequency (22-kHz) calls. These experiments showed that rats emitted high-frequency calls when tested singly in a housing cag

Nebulized ECM Rescue Device (NERD) for Targeted Therapy in Vocal Fold Injuries.

OBJECTIVES: Extracellular matrix (ECM)-based scaffolds and gels demonstrate promise for vocal fold scar treatment; however, these injectables necessitate invasive procedures and repeated dosing. Multiple injections to the folds can damage the tissue, leading to fibrotic outcomes. We hypothesize that a nebulized vocal fold lamina propria ECM (VFLP-ECM) formulation can provide an effective regenerative treatment for upper airway delivery in a novel delivery approach. METHODS: A porcine-derived, nebulized formulation of VFLP-ECM was synthesized for targeted VF delivery. Bilateral vocal fold inju

Effects of tegmental lesions on the isolation call of squirrel monkeys.

The present study is concerned with identifying brain mechanisms underlying a basic mammalian vocalization known as the isolation call. The call serves to reestablish contact of separated individuals. Adult squirrel monkeys were used as experimental subjects because the isolation call in these animals has been shown to be stable, well-defined, and readily elicited under experimental conditions. Bilateral, symmetrical electrocoagulations in certain parts of the tegmentum and core gray matter of the thalamus and midbrain variously altered the character and production of isolation calls, but had

Detection, communication, and individual identification with deep audio embeddings: A case study with North Atlantic right whales.

Anthropogenic noise has increased ambient sound levels across the globe, both underwater and on land. Among its many negative impacts, heightened noise can impair communication in vocal animals through acoustic masking. Conceptually, noise reduces the animal's communication space - the area in which an individual animal can effectively convey information to a conspecific listener. Previous studies have estimated the communication space using sound propagation models and/or behavioral studies. However, studies frequently equate signal recognition with signal detection - a necessary but not suff
