Voice quality after narrow-margin laser cordectomy compared with laryngeal irradiation.

Voice quality remains the issue often used to support preference for radiotherapy in treatment of early glottic cancer. We therefore conducted a perceptual voice study in 2 groups, one treated with radiotherapy for malignant disease and the other with narrow-margin laser cordectomy for either malignant or extensive benign lesions. Sequential patients, 12 treated with radiotherapy and 30 with CO(2) laser excision, were included. Voice samples were recorded before and at intervals after surgery. Ratings of validated judges were used for statistical analysis of various voice characteristics at ea

Acoustic Metrics of the Strain Dimension of Voice Quality: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Strained voice quality-commonly referred to as vocal strain-is a hallmark of functional voice disorders such as muscle tension dysphonia and is often associated with vocal fatigue and laryngeal hyperfunction. Although listeners describe it as excessive vocal effort, strained voice quality frequently overlaps perceptually with breathiness and roughness, complicating reliable assessment. Despite its clinical relevance, no standardized acoustic definition of strained voice quality has been established. PURPOSE: This review aims to identify and summarize the voice acoustic parameters

Effects of Laryngeal Vibratory Asymmetry and Neuromuscular Compensation on Voice Quality.

INTRODUCTION: Vibratory asymmetry and neuromuscular compensation are often seen in laryngeal neuromuscular pathology. However, the ramifications of these findings on voice quality are unclear. This study investigated the effects of varying levels of vibratory asymmetry and neuromuscular compensation on cepstral peak prominence (CPP), an analog of voice quality. STUDY DESIGN: In vivo canine phonation model. METHODS: Varying degrees of vocal fold vibratory asymmetry were achieved by stimulating one recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) over 11 levels from threshold to maximal muscle activation. For

Influence of nasal cavities on voice quality: Computer simulations and experiments.

Nasal cavities are known to introduce antiresonances (dips) in the sound spectrum reducing the acoustic power of the voice. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model of the vocal tract (VT) of one female subject was created for vowels [a:] and [i:] without and with a detailed model of nasal cavities based on CT (Computer Tomography) images. The 3D FE models were then used for analyzing the resonances, antiresonances and the acoustic pressure response spectra of the VT. The computed results were compared with the measurements of a VT model for the vowel [a:], obtained fr

An investigation of voice quality in individuals with inherited elastin gene abnormalities.

The human elastin gene (ELN) is responsible for the generation of elastic fibres in the extracellular matrix of connective tissue throughout the body, including the vocal folds. Individuals with Supravalvular aortic stenosis (SVAS) and Williams syndrome (WS) lack one normal ELN allele due to heterozygous ELN abnormalities, resulting in a haploinsufficiency. We measured perceptual and acoustic characteristics of voice quality in individuals with SVAS and WS to investigate the consequences to vocal function secondary to ELN haploinsufficiency. Results indicated that the voice quality of individu

A robust tool to compare pre- and post-surgical voice quality.

Assessing voice quality by means of objective parameters is of great relevance for clinicians. A large number of indexes have been proposed in literature and in commercially available software tools. However, clinicians commonly resort to a small subset of such indexes, due to difficulties in managing set up options and understanding their meaning. In this paper, the analysis has been limited to few but effective indexes, devoting great effort to their robust and automatic evaluation. Specifically, fundamental frequency (F0), along with its irregularity (Jitter (J) and Relative Average Perturb

Normative Acoustic Data and Voice Quality Assessment in Spanish Young Adults.

PURPOSE: The human voice is a complex acoustic signal shaped by multiple anatomical and environmental factors. It serves as a primary medium for communication, allowing individuals to express emotions, intentions, and identity. These features can change due to aging, lifestyle habits, health conditions, and several sociocultural factors. Given the impact of voice disorders on daily life and psychological well-being, accurate assessment tools are essential for early detection and intervention. Given the natural variability of the human voice and the need for appropriate assessment tools, normat

Spectral- and cepstral-based acoustic features of dysphonic, strained voice quality.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine whether spectral- and cepstral-based acoustic measures were effective in distinguishing dysphonic-strained voice quality from normal voice quality and whether these measures were related to auditory-perceptual ratings of strain severity. METHODS: Voice samples from 23 speakers with dysphonia characterized predominantly by strained voice quality and 23 speakers with normal voice were acoustically analyzed. Measures related to the prominence of the cepstral peak and the ratio of low- to high-frequency spectral energies, as well as the variation of each, were c

Hybrid parametric-physiological glottal modelling with application to voice quality assessment.

A glottal model based on physical constraints is proposed. The model describes the vocal fold as a simple oscillator, i.e. a damped mass-spring system. The oscillator is coupled with a nonlinear block, accounting for fold interaction with the airflow. The nonlinear block is modelled as a regressor-based functional with weights to be identified, and a pitch-synchronous identification procedure is outlined. The model is used to analyse voiced sounds from normal and from pathological voices, and the application of the proposed analysis procedure to voice quality assessment is discussed.
