Atypical presentation of primary giant nasal septal mucopyocele.

Mucoceles are expansile, encapsulated, benign cystic lesions with the potential for adjacent bony remodeling and resorption. Previous nasal surgery, recurrent infections, allergies, and facial traumas are all possible causes of mucoceles involving mainly paranasal sinuses. When the mucocele is infected, it is referred to as mucopyocele. Nasal septal mucoceles seen in only very seldom cases might develop from pneumatized and infected nasal septa. In the current article, we present an interesting primary giant septal mucopyocele that destroys all paranasal cells as a tumoral lesion. The perpendi

Morphometrics and levels of infections of digeneans in belonid fish species off the coast of Tunisia.

Three species of belonid fish, Belone belone gracilis Lowe, 1839, Belone svetovidovi Collette & Parin, 1970 and Tylosurus acus imperialis (Rafinesque, 1810), caught off the eastern Tunisian coast were infected with eight species of Digenea. Among these, four species were commonly found in B. b. gracilis and are new host records for B. svetovidovi. They are: Lecithostaphylus retroflexus (Molin, 1859), Tergestia acanthocephala (Stossich, 1887) Stossich, 1899 and Aponurus laguncula Looss, 1907 in the intestine, and the metacercaria Condylocotyla pilodora Pearson and Prévot, 1985 in the pericardia

A Piranha-like Pycnodontiform Fish from the Late Jurassic.

Pycnodontiformes are an extinct order of ray-finned fishes from the Triassic to Eocene [1, 2], with a characteristic crushing dentition reflecting a highly specialized diet [3]. However, our discovery of a new pycnodontiform from the Late Jurassic (ca. 152 Ma) Plattenkalk deposits of the Solnhofen Archipelago revealed long, pointed teeth along the vomer and triangular teeth with cutting edges along the prearticulars. This is the earliest evidence of specialized flesh cutting in a ray-finned fish. The dentition pattern, tooth shape, jaw morphology, and mechanics are all indicative of a feeding

[Various aspects of endonasal corrective surgery].

This paper discusses the results of 649 rhinoseptoplastic and 139 rhinoconchoplastic operations performed according to modified methods of Killian and Cottle. The surgical intervention led to the following complications: 1) deformation of the nasal septum in the vestibule area (11 patients); 2) perforation of the nasal septum of atrophic origin (15 patients); 3) saddle-like deformation of external nose (7 patients); 4) vibration of the nasal septum which occurred in most patients after total resection of the cartilage and vomer. The author elaborated methods of plastic operations of: the vesti

Diagnosis and outcome of nasal polyposis in 23 dogs treated medically or by endoscopic debridement.

This study describes the clinical, diagnostic, and pathological characteristics of canine nasal polyps and how they responded to medical, endoscopic, and surgical treatments. The database of a multi-center veterinary endoscopy group was searched from 2010 to 2018. All dogs with a histological diagnosis of nasal polyposis that were undergoing endoscopic investigation (N = 23), were included. Clinical signs at presentation were sneezing (91%), nasal discharge (83%), stertor (74%), and frontonasal deformation (17%). Skull radiography on 13 dogs had alterations in 77% of cases, including turbinate

[Choanal atresia--experience with early surgery].

INTRODUCTION: Prior to 1982, patients in our department with choanalatresia were operated by the transpalatinal approach. To eliminate the risk of insufficient transpalatine growth, only older children were operated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From 1982 we have chosen to operate as soon as symptoms occurred, usually at an earlier age. Therefore, we chose the transnasal approach in 32 patients. RESULTS: Of 14 patients with bilateral choanalatresia, nine were operated before two months of age. In nine patients we took care to remove some of the posterior part of vomer. Four of them have been sympto

Lag screw fixation of the premaxilla during bilateral cleft lip repair.

In synchronous primary premaxillary setback and cleft lip repair for bilateral cases with severely protruding premaxilla, stabilization of the premaxilla is mostly achieved by gingivoperiosteoplasty. This kind of repair carries risk of impairment of blood supply to the premaxilla and/or prolabium, and at the same time it cannot ensure adequate stabilization of the premaxilla postoperatively. To overcome these problems, we have developed a unique technique of fixation of the premaxilla. In this paper, we discussing this technique, its advantages, and potential complications associated with it.

Minimizing Palato/velar Fistulas: A New Anatomic Perspective on Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate.

BACKGROUND: Unilateral cleft lip and palates present unique anatomy at the palato-velar-vomerine junction. This region can be the widest and most challenging part of the cleft, where functional fistulas may occur. In 2017, an approach concentrating on the nasal part was implemented, which rendered the repair of this transition zone less challenging. This study detailed this surgical modification, which allows easy and effective palate repair and thereby reduces fistula rates. METHODS: This study included 71 patients with unilateral cleft lip and palates who underwent 1-stage palatal repair us

Chronic rhinocerebral mucormycosis: a rare case report and review of the literature.

Rhinocerebral mucormycosis is an invasive infection caused by filamentous fungi of the Mucoraceae family. The rhinocerebral form of the disease represents the most common form and has two distinct clinical entities. The common presentation consists of a rapidly progressive infection with high mortality rate, while the other presentation is that of a chronic infection with lower mortality. In the present paper we report a rare case of chronic rhinocerebral mucormycosis. An 85-year-old male with a 6-month history of purulent and odorous nasal discharge, and sporadic episodes of epistaxis and ano

Features of maxillary arch and nasal cavity in infancy and their influence on deciduous occlusion in unilateral cleft lip and palate.

The purpose of this study was to test the statistical relationship between certain preoperative characteristics of the maxilla and nasal cavity and later occlusal development in patients born with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate. The sample consisted of 51 patients and 22 of them had undergone surgical treatment which included vomer flap and pushback palatal repair, while the remaining 29 patients were treated with a routine characterized by delayed closure of the hard palate. Twelve variables related to 4 different maxillary and nasal areas were recorded from maxillary casts and fron

Cyclopia: an anatomic and histologic study of two specimens.

The craniofacial complex of two neonatal, human, cyclopic specimens was studied in detail. Both specimens exhibited a single ocular opening and one had a prominent probosics positioned in the midline directly superior to the ocular aperture. No external nasal development was noted in the other specimen. The most remarkable finding was the lack of development of all skeletal derivatives of the ethmoidal cartilage(cribriform plate, perpendicular plate, superior and middle nasal conchae, medial orbital walls, and nasal septal cartilage) in both specimens. Since these bones normally form the media

Familial predisposition to flap necrosis after palatoplasty: a case report of two siblings with bilateral cleft palate.

Mucoperiosteal flap necrosis is a rare but serious complication following cleft palate repair, often resulting in the formation of oronasal fistulas. Although several factors-such as excessive flap tension, pedicle injury, infection, and hematoma-have been implicated in its pathogenesis, the precise mechanisms remain poorly understood. Herein, we report two nonsyndromic siblings with complete bilateral cleft lip and palate, both of whom developed anterior mucoperiosteal flap necrosis on postoperative day 5 after primary palatoplasty performed with a same two-flap technique incorporating a vome

Modified Buccal Myomucosal Flap Closure of Large Anterior Palatal Oronasal Fistulas.

Large oronasal palatal fistulas can be challenging to reconstruct. The authors present a modified buccal myomucosal flap repair technique and review intermediate-term outcomes. In this technique, large anterior palatal fistulas are closed in two layers. First, apposing nasal turnover flaps of vomer mucosa medially and nasal wall mucosa laterally are approximated. Second, a posteriorly based buccal flap incorporating full-thickness buccinator muscle and overlying mucosa is transposed with interposition of the flap in the retromolar trigone and lateral palate to preserve dental occlusion. Morphological and molecular analyses of Pseudomazocraes sulamericana n. sp., Pseudomazocraes selene Hargis, 1957, Cemocotyle carangis (MacCallum, 1913) and Zeuxapta seriolae (Meserve, 1938) (Monogenea: Mazocraeidea) from carangid fishes in the south-western Atlantic Ocean.

An integrative taxonomy approach was followed to analyse morphological and molecular characters of the monogenean species Pseudomazocraes selene, Cemocotyle carangis and Zeuxapta seriolae; specimens were collected from the gills of the carangid fishes Selene vomer, Caranx latus and Seriola lalandi caught off the coasts of the states of Rio de Janeiro and Santa Catarina, Brazil. The research revealed the presence of Pseudomazocraes sulamericana n. sp., which can be differentiated from other congeners by the shape of clamps mid-sclerite possessing a ventral piece bifurcated at the end, with larg

Dental arch relationships following palatoplasty for cleft lip and palate repair.

Palatal scarring is assumed to be a primary cause of facial growth derangement in cleft lip and palate. Evidence supporting this hypothesis is confounded by the clinical involvement of various surgeons, and therefore definitive conclusions are not possible. In this study, we investigated the dental arch relationship in two groups, Exposed (47 children; 11.2 yrs) and Unexposed (61 children; 11.2 yrs), with a unilateral cleft lip and palate operated on by the same surgeon. The technique of hard palate repair differed between the two groups. In the Exposed group, palatal bone of the non-cleft sid

The role of primary surgery in the management of orofacial clefting.

Primary cleft surgery refers to the planned surgical procedure(s) necessary to reconstruct an orofacial defect according to a specified protocol; in the context of a unilateral cleft lip and palate, this would include lip repair (with vomer flap closure of the hard palate), subsequent repair of the residual soft palate cleft and finally, the alveolar bone graft. This paper will provide an overview of the goals of primary surgical reconstruction, including the utility of pre-surgical orthopaedic techniques, including nasoalveolar moulding. The surgical methods of primary lip repair in both unil

A simple, single stage technique to harvest optimal ethmoid bone grafts for caudal septal deflections.

BACKGROUND: Curvature of the caudal septum is a challenging area to surgically address because it is a tip supporting structure. Several methods to straighten the caudal septal deviation have been described to date. One commonly described technique is the placement of a bony septal batten graft. However, the harvest and subsequent ex vivo shaping of the bone graft can be difficult and lead to fracture of the graft superstructure. Here we discuss a novel single stage endoscopic approach to harvest a preformed batten graft and apply it to correct a caudal septal curvature deformity. METHODS: De
