The current longitudinal study focused on predicting depression among spouses of former Israeli war veterans (combat veterans or ex-prisoners of war [ex-POWs]). The research examined the direct and moderating role of secondary trauma related to their husbands' war-related experiences, stress related to being exposed to intimate partner violence in their relationship, being a second-generation Holocaust (SGH) survivor, and the effects of additional stressful life events (SLEs) since the end of the war. Wives of ex-POWs and combat veterans (N = 129) participated in two time measurements. Spouses

BACKGROUND: War causes more death and disability than many major diseases. There are few studies in the context of the deleterious impact of war on fertility potential; therefore, in this study, we tried to review articles about the adverse effects of war on male/ female fertility potential.
METHODS: In this study, a total of 183 articles related to the effects of war on fertility potential were examined by a systematic search using known international medical databases.
RESULTS: Among these studies, there were limited studies on the effects of war on female infertility and most studies exam

Burnout signifies the chronic depletion of coping resources following prolonged exposure to emotionally charged demands. It is manifested by symptoms of emotional, physical and cognitive exhaustion, and is usually studied in relation to occupational stressors. We hypothesized that the major life crisis engendered by missile attacks would give rise to burnout or exacerbate preexisting burnout symptoms. We also hypothesized that individuals suffering from prewar burnout would appraise the war as being more threatening and would be more vulnerable to upper respiratory infections (URI). Wartime an

INTRODUCTION: Military personnel encounter a wide range of environmental and occupational exposures during their service such as burn pit smoke, chemical warfare agents, depleted uranium, jet fuel, radiation, and pesticides. The field of military exposures research seeks to better understand the nature of these exposures and their effects on Veteran and service member health. This state-of-the-art review assesses the breadth and depth of published military exposures research so that stakeholders can identify trends and gaps in this growing field.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An evidence mapping app

Exposure to military combat has been associated with myriad adverse health effects. Mechanisms are not well understood, but may include negative emotional states. The authors investigated the relationship between combat and trait anger and vital exhaustion among 5,347 middle-aged male participants in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study. Combat was significantly associated with trait anger, although results were limited to men of the Korean and Vietnam War eras. Among men of the Korean War era, combat- and noncombat veterans, compared to their nonveteran counterparts, reported more tr

Background: Subjective age (SA) is an indicator of aging that has been empirically associated with health impediments and hindered longevity. Studies show that adverse life events may result in relatively older SA, but have not addressed the differential contribution of life events across the lifespan and the course of posttraumatic psychopathology on the SA of aging survivors of extreme trauma. Objective: Filling this gap, the current study explored the differential contribution of (1) adverse experiences in various life-stages and (2) trajectories of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to t

Gulf War Illness (GWI) is a multi-symptom disorder that manifests with fatigue, sleep disturbances, mood-cognition pathologies, and musculoskeletal symptoms. GWI affects at least 25% of the military personnel that served in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm from 1990 to 1991. We modeled Gulf War toxicant exposure in C57BL/6J mice by combined exposure to pyridostigmine bromide (an anti-sarin drug), chlorpyrifos (an organophosphate insecticide), and DEET (an insect repellent) for 10 days followed by oral treatment with Withania somnifera root extract for 21 days beginning at 12 weeks pos

BACKGROUND: The link between trauma exposure and psychotic disorders is well-established. Further, specific types of trauma may be associated with specific psychotic symptoms. Network analysis is an approach that can advance our understanding of the associations across trauma types and psychotic symptoms.
METHODS: We conducted a network analysis with data from 16,628 adult participants (mean age [standard deviation] = 36.3 years [11.5]; 55.8% males) with psychotic disorders in East Africa recruited between 2018 and 2023. We used the Life Events Checklist and the Mini International Neuropsychi

BACKGROUND: This study explores how war or conflict influences the established predictors of mental well-being among children, addressing a significant gap in current research.
METHODS: Utilizing data from Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS6) collected between 2016 and 2021, we examined children aged 5-17 years in four low or middle-low-income countries experiencing war or conflict and compared them to 20 control countries. We employed logistic models to analyze the data, focusing on mental well-being as the outcome. Primary independent variable was exposure to war, with an emphasis on

BACKGROUND: In February 2022, Russia launched a full scale-invasion of Ukraine, which is the largest European ground offensive since the Second World War. However, the Russian-Ukrainian war began in 2014, when Russia invaded and annexed the Crimea peninsula and occupied part of the eastern regions of Ukraine. This prolonged exposure to war, with its many casualties and massive displacement, has negatively affected the mental health of adolescents, although a comparison of the impacts on adolescents exposed to the various stages of war has not been documented. Our aim is to explore the effects

The authors conducted an extensive search for published works concerning healthcare utilization and mortality among Gulf War veterans of the Coalition forces who served during the 1990-1991 Gulf War. Reports concerning the health experience of US, UK, Canadian, Saudi and Australian veterans were reviewed. This report summarizes 15 years of observations and research in four categories: Gulf War veteran healthcare registry studies, hospitalization studies, outpatient studies and mortality studies. A total of 149728 (19.8%) of 756373 US, UK, Canadian and Australian Gulf War veterans received heal

Many veterans and their advocates are concerned that military service may cause impaired respiratory function resulting from occupational exposures to environmental hazards (e.g., Agent Orange in the Vietnam War, burn pits in the Global War on Terror) or infectious diseases (e.g., pneumonia). Such exposures occurring in service members' young adulthoods may not have immediately discernible effects on lung health; some symptoms may emerge in the immediate months or years after separation from the military, and diagnosable conditions may not manifest until decades later. For 15 years, the debate about depleted uranium (DU) and its detrimental effects on the health of veterans of the Gulf War of 1991, on the Iraqi people and military (and subsequently on the people of Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq during the second war) has remained unresolved. Meanwhile, the number of Gulf War veterans who have developed the so-called Gulf War syndrome has risen to about one-third of the 800,000 U.S. forces deployed, and unknown proportions of those involved in the subsequent wars. Uncounted civilians and personnel of other nations that fought in Iraq and other wars since 1991

There are no reports on the clinicopathological features of mycosis fungoides (MF) among veterans exposed to Agent Orange, one of the herbicides used during the Vietnam War. To evaluate the clinical, histopathological and genotypic findings of Vietnam War veterans with MF and a positive history of exposure to Agent Orange, we performed a comparative clinicopathological study between MF patients with a history of Agent Orange exposure and those without a history of Agent Orange exposure. Twelve Vietnam War veterans with MF were identified. The mean interval from Agent Orange exposure to diagnos

BACKGROUND: People residing in war zones have direct exposure to trauma. In contrast, people living in nearby countries have indirect exposure to trauma and can develop negative psychological symptoms such as anxiety, depression or stress.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to study the mental ill effects of the war on people living in a neighbouring country to a war zone.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 568 community adults >18 years old who live in Jordan was conducted 1-2 months after the Israeli-Palestinian conflict erupted in October 2023. The online survey, spread through social media acc

BACKGROUND: We applied the existential-social psychological perspective of anxiety buffer disruption theory to explain the emergence of psychopathological reactions - post-traumatic stress (PTS) symptoms, depression, anxiety, and substance and behavioral addictions - following exposure to combat-related threats.
METHOD: Israeli reserve soldiers in the Swords of Iron war (N = 357) completed measures of exposure to combat-related threats during the war, attachment anxiety, political voting, mental health (PTS, anxiety, depression) and problematic substance use and behavioral addictions.

Globally, suicide and suicidal behaviors among adolescents and other youth continue to be a serious public health concern.1-3 The influence of war events such as displacement, injuries, continuous bombardments, witnessing atrocities and deaths, the relentless exposure to violent images and messages in the media is associated with acute stress, increased post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and functional impairments.4 Similarly, lack of schooling and support systems in war settings and the associated risk of psychopathology put war-affected populations, especially adolescents and young adult
