Inspiratory muscle warm up improves 400 m performance in elite male runners.

This study sought to establish an optimal inspiratory warm-up (IWU) protocol for elite 400-meter athletes. It addresses the existing gap in sprint-specific research and provides practical applications for coaches and athletes aiming to optimize sprint running performance. Across four weeks, 13 elite male runners (age: 22.7 ± 2, personal best: 50.78 ± 0.65 s) performed four 400-meter time trials after different warm-up protocols in a randomized order. Assessments of various respiratory variables [maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP), maximal expiratory pressure (MEP), peak inspiratory flow rate (

Perceptions of Warm-Up Effectiveness Maps to Stress Physiology in Surfers.

Serpell, BG and Cook, CJ. Perceptions of warm-up effectiveness maps to stress physiology in surfers. J Strength Cond Res 39(12): e1467-e1472, 2025-Warm-ups serve to enhance readiness in sport. Readiness has been defined as a state of physical, psychological, and behavioral preparation to perform. Testosterone and cortisol are often considered biomarkers of readiness in athletes. Furthermore, athletes who have more positive perceptions of warm-up tend to perform better. The purpose of this work was to explore whether changes in testosterone and cortisol profile map to perceptions of warm-up eff

A comparison of dynamic warm-up and "warm-up" using self-massage tools on subsequent sit-and-reach displacement.

OBJECTIVES: A dynamic warm-up (DWU) comprising exercise involving rhythmic muscle actions results in an acute increase in range of motion; however, recent findings suggest that a passive one using self-massage techniques might elicit a similar effect. This study's purpose was to compare the acute effect of leg cycling DWU on sit-and-reach score to the effect of a preparatory regimen of foam rolling (FR) or percussive massage (PM). DESIGN: Single-blind, randomized, repeated-measures crossover study. METHODS: Thirty-two asymptomatic, physically-active participants (male; n = 17) aged 20.9 ± 1.

Physiological mechanisms associated with the use of a passive heat intervention: positive implications for soccer substitutes.

PURPOSE: Soccer substitutes are exposed to periods of limited activity before entering match-play, likely negating benefits of active warm-ups. This study aimed to determine the effects of using a passive heat intervention following a pre-match, and half-time warm-up, on muscle and core temperature in soccer players during ambient (18 °C) and cold (2 °C) conditions. METHODS: On four occasions, 8 male players, completed a pre-match warm-up, followed by 45 min of rest. Following this, participants completed a half-time re-warm-up followed by an additional 45 min of rest, simulating a full match

Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction: diagnosis and management.

Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction describes the narrowing of the airway that occurs with exercise. More than 10 percent of the general population and up to 90 percent of persons previously diagnosed with asthma have exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. Common symptoms include coughing, wheezing, and chest tightness with exercise; however, many athletes will present with nonspecific symptoms, such as fatigue and impaired performance. Spirometry should be performed initially to evaluate for underlying chronic asthma, although results are often normal. An empiric trial of short-acting beta₂ a

The influence of handcycling warmup protocol intensity on workload production during sprint tests in athletes with spinal cord injuries.

OBJECTIVES: Post activation potentiation (PAP) is the phenomenon where muscle force-generating capacity during explosive activities increases after sustained activation. Alternatively, fatigue refers to the decrease in muscle force-generating capacity following sustained activation. The level to which muscles are fatigued or potentiated may influence whether performance is enhanced or decreased. While PAP has been well-documented in able-bodied athletes, few studies have examined PAP in athletes with spinal cord injuries (SCI). Therefore the objective of this study was to examine the influence

Acute effects of squat loading intensity on performance in competitive judo athletes.

Post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) is used to acutely improve sport-specific performance, yet the optimal loading strategy for complex combat sports remains unclear. This randomized, counterbalanced crossover study investigated the acute effects of moderate- and maximal-load squat conditioning activities on judo-specific fitness among nationally competitive male judokas. All participants completed three sessions on separate days (≥ 48 h apart): a control condition consisting of a standardized judo-specific warm-up only, an 80%-PAPE protocol (warm-up + 6 squats at 80% of 6RM), and a

A 6-week warm-up injury prevention programme results in minimal biomechanical changes during jump landings: a randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: To examine the extent to which an ACL injury prevention programme modifies lower extremity biomechanics during single- and double-leg landing tasks in both the sagittal and frontal plane. It was hypothesized that the training programme would elicit improvements in lower extremity biomechanics, but that these improvements would be greater during a double-leg sagittal plane landing task than tasks performed on a single leg or in the frontal plane. METHODS: Ninety-seven competitive multi-directional sport athletes that competed at the middle- or high-school level were cluster randomized

Acute effects of motor-cognitive injury-prevention warm-ups on unplanned jump-landing performance in team-sport athletes: A randomized crossover trial.

In team-sports, agility, perceptual-cognitive abilities, and executive functions are crucial for performance and injury prevention. Incorporating motor-cognitive demands into neuromuscular warm-ups may improve coping with cognitively demanding movement situations, requiring time-constrained decision-making and reactive responses. This randomized three-arm crossover study investigated the acute effects of the Prevent Injury and Enhance Performance (PEP) warm-up and two adapted motor-cognitive versions (PEP+; PEP-SKILLCOURT) on pre-planned (n = 6) and unplanned countermovement jump-landings, wit

Influence of High Intensity 20-Second Static Stretching on the Flexibility and Strength of Hamstrings.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of high intensity static stretching for 20 seconds on flexibility and strength in the hamstrings. Seventeen healthy participants (13 men and 4 women) underwent static stretching for 20 seconds at three different intensities based on the point of discomfort (POD, 120% POD, and MaxPOD). To examine the change in flexibility and strength, range of motion (ROM), passive torque, muscle-tendon unit stiffness, peak torque of maximum voluntary isokinetic concentric contraction, and knee angle at peak torque were measured. To evaluate a time co

Dynamic stretching alone can impair slower velocity isokinetic performance of young male handball players for at least 24 hours.

There are many adult studies reporting static stretch (SS)-induced deficits and dynamic stretch (DS) performance improvements shortly after the intervention. However, there is only a single study examining stretch-induced performance changes with youth at 24 hours' post-stretch. The objective of this study was to examine physiological responses of young trained athletes at 24-hours after experiencing SS or DS protocols. Eight young male, elite handball players (age: 16.1±5.1 years) were tested prior to-, 3-minutes and 24-hours following the three conditions (DS, SS, Control) in a randomized an

Effect of temperament on cortisol response to a single exercise bout in Thoroughbred racehorses - short communication.

Temperament has not been taken into account in previous studies evaluating the stress response to exercise in horses. The aim of the present study was to investigate the cortisol response in Thoroughbred racehorses to a single exercise bout, and to analyse the results based on the basic personality of the horse examined. Twenty healthy Thoroughbred horses were selected for the study based on a 25-item rating questionnaire survey used for characterising equine temperament. Eight temperamental and twelve calm horses took part in the experiment. The horses trotted as a warm-up activity, and then

Caffeine improves supramaximal cycling but not the rate of anaerobic energy release.

The purpose of this study was to determine if improved supramaximal exercise performance in trained cyclists following caffeine ingestion was associated with enhanced O(2) uptake (VO2 kinetics), increased anaerobic energy provision (accumulated O(2)-AO(2)-deficit), or a reduction in the accumulation of metabolites (for example, K(+)) associated with muscular fatigue. Six highly trained male cyclists (VO2peak 68 +/- 8 mL kg(-1) min(-1)) performed supramaximal (120% VO2peak) exercise bouts to exhaustion on an electronically braked cycle ergometer, following double-blind and randomized ingestion
