Solid waste management in Ugandan developing cities: Material flow analysis and sustainable practices for reducing the global warming potential.

The introduction of appropriate solid waste management (SWM) strategies can foster the mitigation of waste open dumping and burning in low-income developing cities. In this work, the SWM system in Gulu (Uganda) has been studied, and a material flow analysis, also of informal flows of waste, has been carried out. Moreover, the effectiveness of the SWM system of St. Mary's Lacor Hospital in Gulu was evaluated. Waste has been characterized and a material flow analysis allowed to highlight the difference with the current situation in the remaining part of Gulu. The sustainable practices already im

A comprehensive study of food waste management and processing in the Czech Republic: Potential health risks and consumer behavior.

Food waste is currently a widely discussed phenomenon with significant economic and social consequences. One third of the food produced in the world is wasted at various points along the food supply chain. This article presents a comprehensive study that examines consumer behavior in dealing with food waste and activities in the composting process that enable waste sanitation. The survey conducted as part of this study showed that consumers want to eliminate odors, are concerned about potential infections, and generally sort less food waste. This study suggested that the addition of appropriat

Evidence of waste management impacting severe diarrhea prevalence more than WASH: An exhaustive analysis with Brazilian municipal-level data.

Adequate housing protects from diarrhea, which is a substantial health concern in low- and middle-income countries. The purpose of this study was to quantify the relationship between severe diarrhea and housing features at the municipal level to help in public health planning. Regression analyses were performed on annual (2000-2012) datasets on Brazilian municipalities (5570) in six household feature categories (e.g., waste management) and four severe diarrhea outcomes (e.g., diarrhea deaths of under-5 children). Household data were not available elsewhere of this magnitude and granularity, hi

What waste management can learn from the traditional mining sector: Towards an integrated assessment and reporting of anthropogenic resources.

Many organizations in Europe collect data and perform research on municipal solid waste and the secondary raw materials that can be produced from them through recycling, urban mining, or landfill mining. However, the information generated and presented thereby is often highly aggregated, while research activities are many a time isolated. Both reduce the usability of the data and information generated. In order to better structure the knowledge generation on secondary raw materials production from municipal solid waste, we suggest to learn from the traditional raw materials mining industry how

Analysis of Brazilian plastic waste management in the global context and case study of the City of Vitória, Espírito Santo.

This review analyses Brazil's current stage of plastic waste management, comparing it to what is being carried out worldwide. The Brazilian National Solid Waste Policy established principles and guidelines for solid waste management. However, a decade after its implementation, the results demonstrate timid results about those expected. Brazil's official solid waste and plastics recycling rates are around 4% and 1%, respectively, considerably behind countries with comparable economic growth levels. This work dedicates considerable attention to microplastic pollution, a worldwide concern with po

Anabolic and anticatabolic actions of ketone bodies on skeletal muscle: potential relevance in the management of skeletal muscle wasting.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Skeletal muscle loss is a hallmark of aging, disease, and physical inactivity, with few effective treatments. Ketone bodies are lipid-derived molecules whose endogenous production is substantially amplified under conditions characterized by carbohydrate deprivation (e.g. fasting, a ketogenic diet). Orally ingested ketone supplements are now available that can rapidly induce a pronounced state of ketosis lasting hours without dietary carbohydrate restriction. Historically, ketone bodies have been hypothesized to spare muscle protein during starvation. Recently, their potentia

Nutritional evaluation of patients receiving dialysis for the management of protein-energy wasting: what is old and what is new?

Advances in the nutritional support of hospitalized patients in the early 1970s led to the recognition that tools were needed to evaluate the nutritional status of patients. The observation that malnutrition in patients receiving dialysis was associated with increased morbidity and mortality prompted many expert groups to develop nutritional scoring systems to be applied in these patients. Given the diverse and confusing terminologies that emerged from these publications, the International Society of Renal Nutritional and Metabolism convened an expert panel to recommend a new nomenclature and

Hyponatremia in the postoperative craniofacial pediatric patient population: a connection to cerebral salt wasting syndrome and management of the disorder.

Hyponatremia after cranial vault remodeling has been noted in a pediatric patient population. If left untreated, the patients may develop a clinical hypoosmotic condition that can lead to cerebral edema, increased intracranial pressure, and eventually, to central nervous system and circulatory compromise. The hyponatremia has traditionally been attributed to the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH); however, in our patients the treatment has been resuscitation with normal saline as opposed to fluid restriction (the accepted treatment of SIADH), thus placing the d

Healthcare waste management during disasters and its effects on climate change: Lessons from 2010 earthquake and cholera tragedies in Haiti.

Despite growing effects of human activities on climate change throughout the world, and global South in particular, scientists are yet to understand how poor healthcare waste management practices in an emergency influences the climate change. This article presents new findings on climate change risks of healthcare waste disposal during and after the 2010 earthquake and cholera disasters in Haiti. The researchers analysed quantities of healthcare waste incinerated by the United Nations Mission in Haiti for 60 months (2009 to 2013). The aim was to determine the relationship between healthcare wa
