The syndrome of mental handicap, cataracts, muscle wasting and skeletal abnormalities: report of a second case.

A severely mentally handicapped Caucasian male with cataracts, deafness, distal muscle wasting and skeletal abnormalities, including calcification of the pinnae, is described. The findings in this patient strongly resemble those in a male described in 1982 by Primrose, and it suggested that this unusual pattern of abnormalities constitutes a discrete entity, which we propose should be known as 'Primrose syndrome'.

HPV16 induces a wasting syndrome in transgenic mice: Amelioration by dietary polyphenols via NF-κB inhibition.

Cancer patients often show a wasting syndrome for which there are little therapeutic options. Dietary polyphenols have been proposed for treating this syndrome, but their usefulness in cases associated with human papillomavirus (HPV)-induced cancers is unknown. We characterized HPV16-transgenic mice as a model of cancer cachexia and tested the efficacy of long-term oral supplementation with polyphenols curcumin and rutin. Both compounds were orally administered to six weeks-old HPV16-transgenic mice showing characteristic multi-step skin carcinogenesis, for 24weeks. Skin lesions and blood, liv

The presence of six potentially pathogenic viruses in pigs suffering from post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is an etiological agent of porcine circovirus diseases (PCVDs). Post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) as the most important PCVD is considered a multifactorial disease. It was demonstrated that not only PCV2 but several viruses are associated with PMWS. Studies of viral co-infections in PMWS pigs led often to controversial results. The aim of this work was to determine the presence of emerging (PRRSV), re-emerging (PTV) and newly-emerging (TTSuV1, TTSuV2, PBoV1) viruses in samples of dead pigs suffering from PMWS. The impact of vaccinat

The use of custom-designed midfacial and submalar implants in the treatment of facial wasting syndrome.

Facial wasting syndrome is part of a lipodystrophy that occurs as a complication of highly active antiretroviral therapy. The loss of subcutaneous fat in the cheeks and temples results in a hollow-eyed, bony, emaciated appearance that is characteristic of the results of treatment of human immunodeficiency virus. Cessation of therapy results in a rebound in viral load and subsequent morbidity. The appearance of facial wasting syndrome is optimally treated with custom-designed implants that are made using high-resolution computed tomography combined with surgeon input and computer-aided design a

Cytokine mRNA expression profiles in lymphoid tissues of pigs naturally affected by postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome.

Fifteen 8-week-old conventional pigs were selected from a farm where pigs were suffering from postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). Ten of the animals were diseased pigs showing typical signs of PMWS (wasting and respiratory disorders) and positive for infection with porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2), and the other five animals selected as controls were pen-mate, apparently healthy pigs. Blood samples and lymphoid tissues were taken from each animal for haematological, serological and histopathological studies. Also, cytokine mRNA expression of IL-1beta, IL-2, IL-4, IL-8, IL-10, IL

IgA-gliadin antibodies, IgA-containing circulating immune complexes, and IgA glomerular deposits in wasting marmoset syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Marmosets in captivity are highly susceptible to wasting marmoset syndrome (WMS), the aetiology of which is still not fully determined. METHODS: The level of IgA-gliadin antibodies (IgA-AGA), of IgA-containing circulating immune complexes (IgA-CIC), and the degree of glomerular IgA deposits were compared between marmosets suffering from WMS and animals not affected by the disorder. RESULTS: Both IgA-AGA and IgA-CIC were demonstrable in all groups of monkeys investigated. IgA-AGA and IgA-CIC were significantly higher in monkeys with WMS than in non-affected animals. There was a si

Comparison of wasting syndrome in [MRL lpr/lpr-->MRL +/+] chimera and graft versus host disease in [B10.D2-->BALB/c] chimera and an attempt to transfer the wasting syndrome in [MRL lpr/lpr-->MRL +/+] to MRL +/+ mice.

We compared the findings in the wasting syndrome seen in [MRL lpr/lpr--> MRL +/+] chimeras with those of chronic graft versus host disease (GVHD) in [B10.D2-->BALB/c] chimeras. BALB/c mice were lethally irradiated and administered B10.D2 spleen and bone marrow cells. These mice are identical to MHC and Mls but differ as to genetic background. As a result of chronic GVHD, these [B10.D2-->BALB/c] chimeras showed hair loss, weight loss and atrophy of lymph nodes and spleen beginning 5 weeks after the transplantation. MRL lpr/lpr mice carry the lpr gene and spontaneously develop generalized lymph

Cerebral Salt Wasting Syndrome in an Elderly Patient With Traumatic Brain Injury: Diagnostic Challenges. A case report.

OBJECTIVE: Cerebral salt-wasting syndrome (CSWS) is an underdiagnosed cause of hyponatremia following intracranial injuries. This case highlights the diagnostic challenges of CSWS in elderly patients, particularly when typical volume depletion signs are absent. CASE: We report an 80-year-old male with multiple comorbidities who developed CSWS following motor vehicle accident-related subarachnoid hemorrhage. The patient was confused, with a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score ranging from eight to ten. Serum sodium declined significantly from 145 to 117 mmol/L approximately 20 days. The patient rem

Cerebral salt wasting syndrome in a patient who suffered a gunshot traumatic head injury: a case report.

Cerebral salt wasting syndrome is described as a hyponatremic condition in the context of a central nervous system injury. It is caused by a renal loss of sodium, and the primary distinguishing factor among similar conditions, such as the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion, is a reduction in the extracellular fluid volume. We describe here the case of a young adult who suffered brain injuries as a result of a gunshot and developed cerebral salt wasting syndrome during his in-hospital stay. Any type of cerebral attack can lead to hyponatraemic syndrome, but the most common

Cerebral salt-wasting syndrome in a child with Wernicke encephalopathy treated with fludrocortisone therapy: A case report.

RATIONALE FOR THIS CASE REPORT: Cerebral Salt-Wasting Syndrome (CSWS) is characterized by hyponatremia and sodium wasting in the urine. These conditions are triggered by various neurosurgical disorders such as subarachnoid hemorrhage, brain tumor, head injury, and brain surgery. To our knowledge, CSWS caused by Wernicke encephalopathy (WE) has been rarely reported. PRESENTING CONCERNS OF THE PATIENT: A 2-year-old male patient presented to our hospital due to a seizure attack. He had been neglected and refused to take food for a long time (body weight < 3rd percentile). During admission, the p

Diagnosis and Management of Combined Central Diabetes Insipidus and Cerebral Salt Wasting Syndrome After Traumatic Brain Injury.

BACKGROUND: Combined central diabetes insipidus and cerebral salt wasting syndrome after traumatic brain injury (TBI) is rare, is characterized by massive polyuria leading to severe water and electrolyte disturbances, and usually is associated with very high mortality mainly as a result of delayed diagnosis and improper management. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical presentation, management, and outcomes of 11 patients who developed combined central diabetes insipidus and cerebral salt wasting syndrome after traumatic brain injury to define distinctive features for timely diagn

Cryptosporidium varanii Infection in Captive Leopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius) and Its Association with Wasting Syndrome in Thailand.

Cryptosporidiosis is a globally important protozoan disease that causes severe gastrointestinal illness in immunocompromised humans and animals and has been associated with chronic wasting and death in reptiles. This study investigated the role of Cryptosporidium infection in wasting syndrome among captive leopard geckos from a commercial breeding facility in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Thirty-five geckos housed in twenty-three enclosures were observed for four months, with fecal samples collected over three consecutive days every two weeks and pooled for molecular analysis. Clinical evaluations inc

Individual risk factors for Post-weaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome (PMWS) in pigs: a hierarchical Bayesian survival analysis.

Risk factors for Post-weaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome (PMWS) at the pig level were identified using data from a longitudinal study in seven PMWS-affected farms in France. In each farm, a representative sample of 120 pigs (180 in one farm) was randomly selected after farrowing and followed from birth to slaughter. Individual information included serological status for Porcine Circovirus type 2 (PCV-2), Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) virus, and Porcine Parvovirus (PPV), individual weight, rearing conditions, and clinical observations recorded at 7, 13, 16 and 21 week

Changes in the incidence and predictors of wasting syndrome related to human immunodeficiency virus infection, 1987-1999.

The authors examined the impact of potent antiretroviral therapy (ART) on the diagnosis of wasting syndrome in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study. Study time was divided into the periods 1988-1990, 1991-1993, 1994-1995, and 1996-1999 to correspond to different treatment eras. The proportion of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome diagnoses in which wasting was present increased from 5% in 1988-1990 to 7.1% in 1991-1993, 7.7% in 1994-1995, and 18.9% in 1996-1999. The incidence of wasting per 1,000 person-years increased from 7.5 in 1988-1990 to 14.4 in 1991-1993 and 22.1 in 1994-1995; it decreased

When the Heart, Kidneys, and Body Waste Away: A Review of Cachexia in Cardiorenal Syndrome.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cardiorenal syndrome refers to disorders of the heart and kidneys in which dysfunction in one organ has resulted in dysfunction of the other. Wasting continuum disorders such as cachexia are highly prevalent in cardiorenal syndrome, yet the clinical impact, pathophysiological mechanisms, and management options have not been well elucidated in previous literature. In this review, we aim to summarize current knowledge regarding the epidemiology, clinical impact, and pathophysiology of CRS-induced wasting continuum disorders, as well as highlight effective and potentially emerg
