Epidemic-prone diseases have traditionally been uncommon among nomadic pastoralists as mobility allows already dispersed populations to migrate away from epidemic threats. In the Karamoja region of Uganda, nomadic pastoralists are transitioning to an increasingly settled lifestyle due to cattle raiding and associated civil insecurity. In attempts to reduce conflict in the region, the Ugandan government has instituted disarmament campaigns and encouraged sedentism in place of mobility. In Karamoja, this transition to sedentism has contributed to the emergence and reemergence of epidemic-prone d

BACKGROUND: Toxocariasis has been listed among the most neglected parasitic diseases worldwide, with approximately one fifth of the global population exposed, particularly those living under poverty. In Brazil, communities of descendants of enslaved blacks (quilombola) have historically had some of the highest rates of vulnerability and poverty, characterized by lack of health assistance, poor quality of life, and nutritional insecurity.
METHODS: A cross-sectional sampling of quilombola individuals living in four communities of southern Brazil, as well as their dogs and the soil, was carried

This study investigates the cascading impacts of recurrent cyclones on the physical and mental health, livelihoods, infrastructure, well-being, and long-term development of communities in the Indian Sundarbans, one of the world's most climate-vulnerable regions. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with community members, frontline public health workers government officials, NGO leaders, mental health counselors, and non-licensed village doctors. We aimed to identify the ecological, geographic, and socioeconomic conditions exacerbating the region's vulnerability to cyclones; examine the i

In recent decades, drought has been identified as part of the several regular climate-related hazards happening in many African countries including South Africa, often with devastating implications on food security. Studies have shown that the earth temperature has increased over the recent years which can trigger drought occurrences and other climate-related hazards. Drought occurrence is principally a climate-related event that cannot be totally effaced though it can be managed. This study is aimed at appraising drought severity in Cape Town area, South Africa using Geographic Information Sy

BACKGROUND: Provision of safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) to affected populations in humanitarian emergencies is necessary for dignity and communicable disease control. Additional evidence on WASH interventions is needed in humanitarian settings. Between 2008 and 2019, we completed six multi-country, mixed-methods effectiveness studies in humanitarian response on six different WASH interventions. In each evaluation, we conducted: key informant interviews; water point observations and water quality testing; household surveys with recipients, including survey and water quality testing;

Poverty, conflict and war are the most prominent reasons for food insecurity worldwide including for the population of Gaza since October 7, 2023. It has been shown that at least during the seven-month period between January and July, 2024, an adequate supply of food was delivered to Gaza. However, a distinction must be made between food availability (entering Gaza), and food accessibility (food supply actually reached at the household level). The latter was apparently controlled by Hamas; and there are no reliable data available on the actual distribution of food. A prerequisite for achieving

Current migration journeys often involve crossing several borders, exposing migrants to numerous difficulties and dangers. This article qualitatively describes the migrant trajectories of twenty-five Haitian migrants who intended to travel from Chile to Mexico in an attempt to cross into the United States, delving into the dynamic physical and mental health outcomes at different phases of their journey. Our findings reveal that Haitian participants began their journeys in a context of instability, violence, insecurity, and precariousness from their country of origin, and factors such as stress

El Niño is a recurrent mode of tropical Pacific climate variability with major public health implications for Latin America and the Caribbean. Its development is partly driven by the Bjerknes feedback, a coupled ocean-atmosphere process in which weakened equatorial trade winds reduce coastal upwelling and allow warm surface waters to shift eastward. Warming of the central and eastern tropical Pacific can reshape regional rainfall and temperature patterns, increasing the likelihood of floods, droughts, wildfires, food-system disruption, and health-service interruption in locations with establis

Air pollution, global warming, and energy insecurity are three major problems facing the world. This study first examines whether 149 countries can transition 100% of their business-as-usual (BAU) all-sector energy to electricity and heat obtained from 100% wind-water-solar (WWS) sources to solve these problems. WWS eliminates energy-related air pollution deaths and CO2-equivalent emissions while reducing end-use energy needs by ∼54.4%, annual energy costs by ∼59.6%, and annual social (energy plus health plus climate) costs by ∼91.8% among nations, giving energy- and social-cost payback times

Researchers are examining the possibilities for alternative fuel research as a fossil fuel replacement in light of global energy insecurity and other urgent challenges like global warming, severe emissions, and growing industrialization. This research uses 1-pentanol as a low reactivity fuel and Jatropha biodiesel as a high reactivity fuel to explore the reactivity-controlled compression ignition engine characteristics. A water-cooled single-cylinder engine is used in an experiment with varied loads of 25%, 50%, and 75% at a constant speed of 2000 rpm to examine the effects of operational para

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is an essential water-soluble antioxidant, and deficiency (ie, plasma level <11 μmol/L) can result in scurvy. People at the highest risk for vitamin C deficiency (ie, scurvy) are those with inadequate intake, such as patients with alcohol abuse disorder, malnutrition, psychiatric disorders, restrictive eating habits, and food insecurity, as well as those with malabsorptive syndromes. We present a case of a 26-year-old woman with Crohn's colitis, myasthenia gravis, and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis who presented with frequent bruising, epistaxis, and excessive bleeding

The effects of global warming and climate change are happening at a faster rate than expected, and they are going to get worse. Global climate change has already started to show the effects on environment-fast melting glaciers, accelerated sea level rise and base shifting of native flora and fauna. There has been an increase in temperature globally with a few countries already showing intense heat waves and extreme cold temperatures. The interrelation between dentistry, environmental impact and human health is still in its nascent stage, but studies in medicine show that the healthcare industr

Malnutrition-consisting of undernutrition, overweight and obesity, and micronutrient deficiencies-continues to afflict millions of women and children, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). Since the 2013 Lancet Series on maternal and child nutrition, evidence on the ten recommended interventions has increased, along with evidence of newer interventions. Evidence on the effectiveness of antenatal multiple micronutrient supplementation in reducing the risk of stillbirths, low birthweight, and babies born small-for-gestational age has strengthened. Evidence continues to

Multiple drivers of the double burden of malnutrition (DBM) include a rapid shift from predominantly plant-based diets to energy-dense foods based on meats, milk, animal fats and vegetable oils. The shift to overweight and obesity is driven by increased exposure to mass media, urbanization, technological advances in food processing, rising income and increased population density associated with increased access to cheap foods. At the same time, undernutrition persists mainly due to food insecurity and lack of access to safe water, sanitation and adequate health care. All known nutrition interv

BACKGROUND: Armed conflicts cause food insecurity and famine by triggering the disruption and destruction of food systems. The conflict that erupted in northern Ethiopia lasted from 2020 to 2022 and affected millions of people. This resulted in severe damage to the food security, livelihoods and social dynamics of communities in the Amhara region.
OBJECTIVE: This study synthesized the impact of the conflict in northern Ethiopia on food security, livelihoods and social dynamics livelihoods in there zones, South Wello, North Wello and North Shewa zones of the Amhara Region. The conflict managem

Cholera, a severe fecal-oral disease, disproportionately affects the poorest communities who lack access to safe water and sanitation. Individuals living in the same household, or within a few hundred meters, of a patient are at increased risk of infection. Thus, during cholera outbreaks, targeted response strategies, such as case-area targeted interventions (CATIs), provide health (e.g., vaccination and antibiotic prophylaxis) and water, sanitation, and hygiene services for affected households and at-risk neighbors living in a defined ring. Previous research on CATIs has focused on impact and

BACKGROUND: Building dams and irrigation schemes as resilience measures against growing food insecurity and water scarcity may increase malaria risk in endemic settings. This study aims to assess the clinical and asymptomatic carriage of Plasmodium falciparum throughout the year and explores their association with socio-economic and weather factors in Nanoro, Burkina Faso.
METHODS: A monthly household-based surveys were conducted from March 2022 to February 2023 in five villages located at variable distance (3-40 km) from the Soum dam located in the Nanoro Health district catchment area. Soci

Cancer disparities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) arise from multifaceted interactions between environmental exposures, infectious agents, and systemic inequities, such as limited access to care. The exposome, a framework encompassing the totality of non-genetic exposures throughout life, offers a powerful lens for understanding these disparities. In LMICs, populations are disproportionately affected by air and water pollution, occupational hazards, and oncogenic infections, including human papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), human immun

As the world counts down to the 2025 World Health Assembly nutrition targets and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, millions of women, children, and adolescents worldwide remain undernourished (underweight, stunted, and deficient in micronutrients), despite evidence on effective interventions and increasing political commitment to, and financial investment in, nutrition. The COVID-19 pandemic has crippled health systems, exacerbated household food insecurity, and reversed economic growth, which together could set back improvements in undernutrition across low-income and middle-income coun

Humanitarian emergencies may result in breakdown of regular health services including routine vaccination programs. Displaced populations including refugees and internally displaced persons are particularly susceptible to outbreaks of communicable diseases such as vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs). Common VPDs encountered in humanitarian emergencies include measles, polio, and depending on geographical location, meningococcal meningitis, yellow fever, hepatitis A, and cholera. We conducted a review of 50 published articles from 2000 to 2015 concerning VPDs in humanitarian emergencies. This a
