Assessing pollution in sediment and water before, during and after sediment dredging in a Mediterranean harbor.

Marinas are semi-enclosed environments with low hydrodynamic energy, high sedimentation rates, and reduced oxygen levels, making them prone to contaminant accumulation. In the Mediterranean, where tidal amplitude is low, these conditions lead to infrequent dredging and prolonged pollutant buildup. This study assessed the impact of sediment dredging on trace metal elements (TMEs) and organotin compounds in the water column of a Mediterranean marina. A 21-month monitoring campaign was conducted, covering pre-dredging (12 months), dredging (4 months), and post-dredging (5 months) phases. Such lon

Ozonolysis of ketoprofen in polluted water: Reaction pathways, kinetics, removal efficiency, and health effects.

Ketoprofen (KET), as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug frequently detected in aqueous environments, is a threat to human health due to its accumulation and low biodegradability, which requires the transformation and degradation of KET in aqueous environments. In this paper, the reaction process of ozone-initiated KET degradation in water was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) method at the M06-2X/6-311++g(3df,2p)//M06-2X/6-31+g(d,p) level. The detailed reaction path of KET ozonation is proposed. The thermodynamic results show that ozone-initiated KET degradation is feasibl

Formulation of water pollutant discharge limits for malathion based on nonsensitive aquatic organism protection.

The "Integrated Wastewater Discharge Standard" was implemented for water pollutant discharge in China's pesticide industry, which has no control requirements for particular wastewater pollutants in the industry. In the standard, certain pollutants discharge limits are limited strictly or loosely, resulting in practical management implementation difficulties. In view of the highly selective targeting characteristics of organic pesticide active ingredients in fungicides, insecticides, and herbicides, a method for deriving discharge limits based on the water quality criteria for pesticides for th

Chronic exposure to water pollutant trichloroethylene increased epigenetic drift in CD4(+) T cells.

AIM: Autoimmune disease and CD4(+) T-cell alterations are induced in mice exposed to the water pollutant trichloroethylene (TCE). We examined here whether TCE altered gene-specific DNA methylation in CD4(+) T cells as a possible mechanism of immunotoxicity. MATERIALS & METHODS: Naive and effector/memory CD4(+) T cells from mice exposed to TCE (0.5 mg/ml in drinking water) for 40 weeks were examined by bisulfite next-generation DNA sequencing. RESULTS: A probabilistic model calculated from multiple genes showed that TCE decreased methylation control in CD4(+) T cells. Data from individual gen

Macro-invertebrate decline in surface water polluted with imidacloprid: a rebuttal and some new analyses.

Imidacloprid, the largest selling insecticide in the world, has received particular attention from scientists, policymakers and industries due to its potential toxicity to bees and aquatic organisms. The decline of aquatic macro-invertebrates due to imidacloprid concentrations in the Dutch surface waters was hypothesised in a recent paper by Van Dijk, Van Staalduinen and Van der Sluijs (PLOS ONE, May 2013). Although we do not disagree with imidacloprid's inherent toxicity to aquatic organisms, we have fundamental concerns regarding the way the data were analysed and interpreted. Here, we demon

Uncertainties in risk assessment for the determination of drinking water pollutant concentrations: Cryptosporidium case study.

There is a growing acknowledgement of the need to recognise uncertainties in the estimation of waterborne risks. In this paper, the strength of the science available to characterise Cryptosporidium risks in drinking water is investigated, in particular the determination of oocyst concentrations at various points in the chain of water supply. A recently developed scientific quality audit framework is used as a tool to guide this investigation. The framework systematically reveals the relatively greater strength of the science for the "upstream" elements (estimation of concentrations in environm

[Balkan nephropathy and urothelial cancer. Well water pollution and current questions on pathogenesis and carcinogenesis].

In the autopsied inhabitants who died from unrelated reasons in the villages-foci of Balkan Nephropathy (BN) the characteristic histologic changes of the initial phase of BN were found as well as the striking difference in the weight of the kidneys. The weight of a kidney amounting to 180 grams was noted. The continual, severe environmental exposure to polluted drinking water by erosive toxic silica accounts for the excessive silica accumulation in the kidney and its overhydration. Silica has an affinity for water molecules absorbating them on its surface, the absorption of water coats round t

[Effects of soil and ground water pollution with perchloroethylene from the public health service viewpoint].

A routine analysis of drinking water conducted in September 1987 in a Rhenish water works revealed a perchloroethylene (PER) content of 3 micrograms/l. Within less than 3 months the concentration in the two northern wells of the entire battery consisting of 4 wells rose to 20 micrograms/l, and hence the complete battery had to be shut off from the water supply network. The pumped-up water was diverted to a draining plant via the precipitation tank of the water works. During the two subsequent months the PER concentration continued to rise, especially in well No. 1, to more than 120 micrograms/

Determination of "heavy" organotin pollution of water and shellfish by a modified hydride atomic absorption procedure.

Tin speciation in aquatic environment is very complex. To the natural SnIV and methylated compounds, human activities add mainly butylated, octylated, phenylated or even methylated derivatives. The most environmentally significant, due to their high toxicity and direct introduction in water through biocidal use, are the trisubstituted ones. Several sophisticated speciation procedures have been proposed, they are not susceptible of common use. We propose a simple and fast procedure allowing routine global distinction of "heavy" tin species that are most susceptible of exerting harmful effects.

Analysis of soil and water pollution produced by improper medical waste disposal and its impacts.

Many countries struggle with the systematic separation and disposal of medical waste, which poses significant risks of disease transmission and cross-contamination. This study synthesizes literature from 2017 to 2023 to examine the environmental consequences of improper healthcare waste management, specifically regarding soil and water ecosystems. The review establishes a direct scientific link between medical waste dumping sites and the presence of heavy metal concentrations that exceed safety thresholds in surrounding agricultural lands. A key finding of this research is the identification o

D-band broadening drives pollutant oxidative polymerization for intermediate-free water purification.

Oxidative polymerization driven by direct electron transfer (DET) demonstrates superior selectivity and strong anti-interference capability in water purification. However, its practical application is constrained by inherent limitations, including inadequate polymerization efficiency and extent, as well as catalytic site deactivation. To address these challenges, we propose a catalytic pathway engineering strategy through D-band broadening. Building upon this principle, a cobalt-manganese oxide-modified graphite felt (Co‑MnO2@GF) catalyst was developed and integrated into a dual-chamber reacti

Meta-analysis and empirical research on the effectiveness of biochar in remediating tetracyclines pollution in water bodies.

The rapid increase in tetracycline pollution from intensive aquaculture necessitates urgent action to reduce tetracycline levels in water bodies, as its stability promotes antibiotic resistance, disrupts aquatic ecosystems, and poses health risks to humans through bioaccumulation. Current treatment methods like ozone oxidation are often costly or ineffective. Biochar, recognised for its cost-effectiveness and adsorption capacity, provides a promising solution. Through a meta-analysis of 110 research articles integrating 537observations focused on plant-based biomass, this study identified the

Mercury pollution poses a global health threat due to its high toxicity, especially in seafood where it accumulates through various pathways. Developing effective and affordable technologies for mercury removal from water is crucial. Adsorption stands out as a promising method, but creating low-cost materials with high selectivity and capacity for mercury adsorption is challenging. Here we show a sustainable method to synthesize low-cost sulfhydrylated cellulose with ethylene sulfide functionalities bonded glucose units. Thiol-functionalized cellulose exhibits exceptional adsorption capacity (
