Response Model for Urban Area Source Pollution and Water Environmental Quality in a River Network Region.

With the development of cities, urban area source pollution has become more severe and a significant source of water pollution. To study the relationship between urban area source pollution and water environmental quality in a river network, this study uses a city in the Yangtze River Delta, China, as an example. The Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) model and the MIKE11 model were combined into a unified modeling framework and used to simulate dynamic changes in the water quality of a river network under light rain, moderate rain, and heavy rain. In the study period, the annual urban area s

3-hydroxy 3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase: a new biomarker of fish exposure to water pollution.

The aim of this study was to identify a new putative biomarker in Salmo trutta exposed to water pollution. Variations in the levels of hepatic 3-hydroxy 3-methylglutaryl Coenzyme A reductase (HMG-CoAR), the rate-limiting enzyme of cholesterol biosynthesis, were compared to heat shock protein 70 and hypoxia inducible factor α, biomarkers of pollution exposure and lowered O₂, respectively. The results confirm that HMG-CoAR levels increase in polluted water irrespective of water temperature or O₂ content, indicating that HMG-CoAR could be used as a specific biomarker for water pollution.

Mercury in a boreal forest stream--role of historical mercury pollution, TOC, temperature, and water discharge.

Over a one-year study period (2003), we monitored total Hg (HgT) and methyl Hg (MeHg) at two sites in a Swedish forest stream located above (Site(ref)) and below a stretch of Hg-contaminated sediments (SiteHg). We also monitored HgT, MeHg, and ancillary water chemistry in peat water close to the stream and HgT in open field wet deposition. Despite the presence of historical Hg contaminants, direct atmospheric Hg deposition and transfer of Hg from the catchment explained more than half of the annual HgT load at SiteHg. The concentrations of both HgT and MeHg were sensitive to changes in water d

A study on volatile organic sulfide causes of odors at Philadelphia's Northeast Water Pollution Control Plant.

Volatile organic sulfide (VOS) causes of odors were studied at Philadelphia's Northeast Water Pollution Control Plant between September 11 and November 25, 2003. Results showed that dimethyl sulfide (DMS) dominated the VOS pool whenever VOS concentration rose above the background level (<50 microg/L). Methanethiol was generally less than 10% of VOS and it was mainly found at sites with limited or reduced dissolved oxygen (DO). Dimethyl disulfide occupied approximately 1% of the VOS and was often not detectable. Carbon disulfide was not detected. The concentrations of DMS varied by three orders

[Effect of water pollution by oil and oil products on barrier functions of bacterial cell cytoplasmic membranes].

The effects of oil, diesel fuel, and kerosene on the electroorientational spectra and osmo-optical characteristics of bacterial cells were studied. Electroorientational spectra were found to be affected over the entire frequency range studied; changes in low-frequency (< 100 kHz) electroorientation were related to alterations in the cell surface, and those in high-frequency electroorientation, to the impairment of the barrier function of the plasma membrane. The membranotropic activity of petroleum products was also demonstrated by the osmo-optical method. Of nine bacterial species studied, Ps

Impacts of sewage treatment works versus diffuse pollution on bacterial water quality at rural wild swimming sites.

We investigated the factors shaping bacterial water quality at rural wild swimming sites located in catchments that are dominated by peatland, woodland, grassland, and arable land, with <3% (sub)urban land cover. We quantified faecal indicator bacteria and environmental DNA (eDNA) derived markers, including antimicrobial resistance traits (AMR), in the influent and effluent of a village sewage treatment works (STW) and across five river sampling locations. If formally designated and monitored, the wild swimming sites in this study would be unlikely to meet bathing standards, primarily due to e

Biomarkers of oxidative stress in rat for assessing toxicological effects of heavy metal pollution in river water.

Increasing use of heavy metals in various fields, their environmental persistency, and poor regulatory efforts have significantly increased their fraction in river water. We studied the effect of Musi river water pollution on oxidative stress biomarkers and histopathology in rat after 28 days repeated oral treatment. River water analysis showed the presence of Zn and Pb at mg/l concentration and Ag, As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, Ni, Sn, and Sb at μg/l concentration. River water treatment resulted in a dose-dependent accumulation of metals in rat organs, being more in liver followed by kidney

Sensitivity analysis using a diffuse pollution hydrologic model to assess factors affecting pesticide concentrations in river water.

We quantitatively evaluated the factors that affect the concentrations of rice-farming pesticides (an herbicide and a fungicide) in river water by a sensitivity analysis using a diffuse pollution hydrologic model. Pesticide degradation and adsorption in paddy soil affected concentrations of the herbicide pretilachlor but did not affect concentrations of the fungicide isoprothiolane. We attributed this difference to the timing of pesticide application in relation to irrigation and drainage of the rice paddy fields. The herbicide was applied more than a month before water drainage of the fields

Pollution and toxicity of heavy metals in wildfires-affected soil and surface water: A review and meta-analysis.

Wildfires, both natural and man-made, release and mobilize hazardous substances such as heavy metal(loids) (HM), which are known carcinogens. Following intense rainfall events, HM bound to soil organic matter are transported from the soil to surface water, resulting in water quality degradation. This study reviews the pollution status of HM in wildfire-affected soil and surface water, as well as their toxic effects on aquatic organisms and humans. The rate of HM release during wildfires depends on factors such as the type of tree burned and fire severity. The mobility of HM from soil to surfac

A comparative study of different activation methods for hydrochar: surface properties and removal of pharmaceutical pollutant in water.

Contaminants of emerging concerns, such as sulfonamides, have been frequently discovered in surface water, and the design of biomass-based adsorbents is a promising research direction to remove them from water. In this study, hydrothermal carbonization was utilized to prepare hydrochar (HC) from orange peels along with various activations, including hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and HCl. The main goals of the present study are (i) to prepare hydrochars that were activated by different chemical methods and (ii) to provide insights into the adsorption mechanism of pollutant removal using sulfamethoxa
