Retrograde amnesia: a study of its relation to anterograde amnesia and semantic memory deficits.

This group study of 24 amnesic patients and 40 control subjects examined the hypothesis that retrograde memory deficits result from a combination of two impairment mechanisms: (1) a deficit in the retrieval of contents that is related to dysfunctioning of the hippocampal anterograde memory system, and (2) a deficit in the storage and/or retrieval of contents that is related to concomitant neocortical lesions. Retrograde amnesia was evaluated with the use of new Famous Persons and Autobiographical Memory Tests. The postulated components of retrograde memory impairment were assessed using the We

Association of Neonatal Midazolam Exposure With Hippocampal Growth and Working Memory Performance in Children Born Preterm.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Early exposure to analgesics and sedatives is a key concern for later learning disorders in children. The hippocampus, a key region for learning and memory, may be selectively affected by exposure to benzodiazepines that are commonly used for sedation, particularly in the neonatal period. In this prospective cohort study, the long-term association of neonatal midazolam exposure, a widely used benzodiazepine in neonatal intensive care, with school age hippocampal growth was examined. Higher-order cognitive function in preterm born children was assessed in relation to

[Amnestic syndrome after right temporo-occipital subcortical hemorrhage].

A case of right temporo-occipital subcortical hemorrhage with amnestic syndrome was reported. A 65-year-old woman presented with visual disturbance and headache. CT and MRI demonstrated a hemorrhagic lesion in the right occipital lobe involving parahippocampal gyrus. Neurological examination on admission revealed left homonymous hemianopsia and anterograde and retrograde amnesia. Neuropsychological examination revealed marked recent memory disturbance, but she had visual retention and verbal retention, and her value in WAIS (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale) was normal. After 40 days, she was

The relationship between attention, executive functions and reading domain abilities in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and reading disorder: a comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Co-morbidity of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and reading disorder (RD) is frequent. The objective of this investigation was to assess the potential uniqueness of co-morbid ADHD + RD and extend existing findings to the Hebrew language. METHOD: A parallel group design with post-hoc analysis of group differences was employed comparing four groups of children (19 ADHD, 17 RD, 27 ADHD + RD, and 23 controls) on reading measures, attention and executive functions (EF) as well as functions of phonemic awareness and rapid naming. Forward stepwise regressions were run in

Visual but not spatial working memory deficit in children with spina bifida.

Twenty children with spina bifida and twenty controls were assessed on a battery of visuospatial working memory tests. Children with spina bifida performed as well as the control group in the visuospatial test and in the forward and backward versions of the Corsi test, but were impaired in the 'House Visual Span.' This test, designed in our lab, provides specific information regarding visual ability to discriminate between pictorial targets and lures, and requires specific visual processing of stimuli. These results are discussed in terms of working memory models and are viewed as supporting t

Selective sparing of topographical memory.

The case of a 61 year old patient with Pick's disease involving predominantly the left temporal lobe, who has been studied over a 5 year period, is reported. She presented with a grave impairment of both verbal and non-verbal memory functions. Her non-verbal memory deficits included profound impairments on the recognition of unfamiliar faces and the recall of abstract designs. Remarkably, her visual recognition memory performance for unknown buildings, landscapes, and outdoor scenes was preserved. Strikingly, her ability to recall familiar routes and learn new ones through a complex virtual re

Digit repetition in brain-damaged adults: clinical and theoretical implications.

Digit repetition was investigated in samples of unilaterally (N = 87) and bilaterally (N = 75) brain-damaged adults. The study was designed to investigate the hemispheric and neuropsychological factors that underlie performance on these two dissimilar tasks. Digit repetition was disproportionately depressed in such patients, especially those with left hemisphere lesions. The incidence of individually impaired digit repetition performance, especially of digits backward, was significantly higher than in normals, again particularly within the left hemisphere sample. However, impaired digit repeti

[Neuropsychological disorders after subarachnoid hemorrhage and surgery in anterior communicating artery brain aneurysms].

In the years 1982-1985 in the Dept. of Neurosurgery of the Jagiellonian University, 197 patients with anterior communicating artery aneurysms were operated on. Excluding multiple aneurysms (9), and taking into account early surgical losses (16), 172 patients were supposed to undergo late medical examinations. The patients were examined by means of questionnaires at least five years after surgery. 43 patients out of the 123 (71.5%) who handed in filled-in questionnaires, underwent psychological examination. Preliminary analysis of the late results of surgery indicates maintenance of the neurolo

Working memory deficit in patients with focal epilepsy is associated with higher interictal theta connectivity.

OBJECTIVE: Interictal cognitive disturbances are frequent in patients with focal epilepsies and the links with alteration of resting state brain oscillations are not well known. Changes in theta oscillations, may contribute to cognitive impairment. This study aimed to investigate whether changes in theta activity are related to cognitive disturbances. METHODS: Retrospective data of 23 patients with temporal/frontal lobe epilepsy were included. Theta connectivity, power and interictal spikes rate from five-minute interictal resting state stereoelectroencephalography datasets were computed. Cog

Exploring the Potential of the Corpus Callosum Area as a Predictive Marker for Impaired Information Processing in Multiple Sclerosis.

Early cognitive impairment (CI) detection is crucial in multiple sclerosis (MS). However, it can progress silently regardless of relapse activity and reach an advanced stage. We aimed to determine whether the corpus callosum area (CCA) is a sensitive and feasible marker for CI in MS compared to other neuroimaging markers. We assessed cognitive function in 77 MS patients using the Symbol Digit Modalities Test, Paced Auditory Serial Additions Task, Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-IV, and Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised. The neuroimaging markers included manually measured CCA, two diffusion tenso

Self-reported memory strategy use following acquired brain injury.

INTRODUCTION: Neuropsychological rehabilitation following acquired brain injury (ABI) often involves interventions teaching individuals with ABI strategies to compensate for memory impairment. However, little is known about spontaneous memory strategy use (i.e. without treatment) and its determinants. The primary aim was to compare spontaneous memory strategy use in daily life and during a memory task between participants with ABI and cognitively unimpaired controls. Other aims were to investigate the relationships between strategy use, demographic and clinical characteristics, and memory perf

Women have farther to fall: gender differences between normal elderly and Alzheimer's disease in verbal memory engender better detection of Alzheimer's disease in women.

We analyzed verbal episodic memory learning and recall using the Logical Memory (LM) subtest of the Wechsler Memory Scale-III to determine how gender differences in AD compare to those seen in normal elderly and whether or not these differences impact assessment of AD. We administered the LM to both an AD and a Control group, each comprised of 21 men and 21 women, and found a large drop in performance from normal elders to AD. Of interest was a gender interaction whereby the women's scores dropped 1.6 times more than the men's did. Control women on average outperformed Control men on every asp
