An aggressive nonconsumptive effect mediates pest control and multipredator interactions in a coffee agroecosystem.

Natural pest control is an alternative to pesticide use in agriculture, and may help to curb insect declines and promote crop production. Nonconsumptive interactions in natural pest control that historically have received far less attention than consumptive interactions, may have distinct impacts on pest damage suppression and may also mediate positive multipredator interactions. Additionally, when nonconsumptive effects are driven by natural enemy aggression, variation in alternative resources for enemies may impact the strength of pest control. Here we study control of the coffee berry borer

A Novel Semiochemical Tool for Protecting Pinus contorta From Mortality Attributed to Dendroctonus ponderosae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

Verbenone (4,6,6-trimethylbicyclo[3.1.1]hept-3-en-2-one) is an antiaggregant of the mountain pine beetle, Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), a notable forest insect capable of causing extensive levels of tree mortality in western North America. Several formulations of verbenone are registered for tree protection, but failures in efficacy are not uncommon, particularly when applied during large infestations. A formulation of (-)-verbenone was developed (Specialized Pheromone & Lure Application Technology [SPLAT] Verb, ISCA Technologies Inc., Riverside, CA) and evaluate

Occurrence patterns of Myllocerinus aurolineatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and histological observation of adult female tissues.

From March 2023 to December 2024, a comprehensive study was conducted on the field population dynamics, developmental duration, life history, and ovarian development of Myllocerinus aurolineatus (M.aurolineatus). The study combined systematic field surveys, laboratory rearing, and ovarian dissection. The results indicated that M. aurolineatus has one generation year. The temporal dynamics varied slightly between years. In 2023, adult emergence began in early May, with a population increase in late May and a peak density in early June. In 2024, emergence occurred earlier (late April); the popul

Ethanol tolerance of fungal strains underlies biocontrol of invasive ambrosia beetles.

Entomopathogenic fungi are widely recognized as biological control agents showing potential against insect pests that are difficult to manage with chemical pesticides. Invasive ambrosia beetles threaten a wide variety of tree crops and prove challenging to manage with chemical pesticides due to their unique life history: entrenched in the xylem of tree hosts, feeding on symbiotic fungi. Many ambrosia beetle species attack trees that are flood-stressed and producing ethanol, a key component of growth for their fungal symbiont. Ethanol causes osmotic and chaotropic stress in microbes and could p

Variability in spruce beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae) adult diapause and evidence for oocyte development prior to winter in a Colorado population.

Diapause regulates seasonal insect life cycles and may be highly variable within and among populations due to genetic and environmental variability. Both types of variation may influence how populations respond plastically or evolutionarily to changing climates. We assessed diapause variability in spruce beetle Dendroctonus rufipennis Kirby (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae), a major forest pest whose life cycle timing is regulated by both prepupal and adult diapauses. Using mating studies and ovary dissections, we tested for variability in adult diapause within and between collection sit

Immature stages of Phloeosinus tacubayae (Curculionidae: Scolytinae): morphology and chaetotaxy of larva and pupa, sexual dimorphism of adults, and developmental time.

The current knowledge of morphology and chaetotaxy of the different developmental stages within the subfamily Scolytinae presents an information deficit that needs to be addressed. Thus, the objective of the present study was to describe, the chaetotaxy and morphology of larvae and pupae, and determine the number of larval instars, the sexual dimorphism in adults, and the development time in Phloeosinus tacubayae. The number of larval instars was determined using traditional morphometry of cephalic capsule and multivariate analysis; description of morphology and chaetotaxy of larvae and pupae,

Seasonal Dynamics of Flight Phenology of the Euwallacea fornicatus Species Complex and an Associated Parasitoid Wasp in Avocado Groves in Taiwan.

The Euwallacea fornicatus species complex (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae: Xyleborini) is a group of four cryptic ambrosia beetle species. Native to Asia, several members of the complex have invaded other continents, where they cause significant economic losses to agricultural crops (e.g., avocado) and natural ecosystems. We were primarily interested in developing management strategies by focusing on the flight behavior of the beetles. Thus, seasonal differences in flight activity were assessed using panel traps baited with a commercial quercivorol lure, placed in infested avocado orcha

The fungal community associated with the ambrosia beetle Xylosandrus compactus invading the mediterranean maquis in central Italy reveals high biodiversity and suggests environmental acquisitions.

In summer 2016 a severe infestation of the alien ambrosia beetle Xylosandrus compactus was recorded from the Mediterranean maquis in the Circeo National Park in Central Italy. Trees and shrubs were infested and displayed wilting and necrosis of terminal branches caused by the combined impact of the insect and associated pathogenic fungi. A preliminary screening carried out on captured adults resulted in the isolation of a discrete number of fungal taxa with different life strategies, ranging from true mutualist (e.g. Ambrosiella xylebori) to plant pathogens (Fusarium spp.). In the present stud

Partnerships Between Ambrosia Beetles and Fungi: Lineage-Specific Promiscuity Among Vectors of the Laurel Wilt Pathogen, Raffaelea lauricola.

Nutritional mutualisms that ambrosia beetles have with fungi are poorly understood. Although these interactions were initially thought to be specific associations with a primary symbiont, there is increasing evidence that some of these fungi are associated with, and move among, multiple beetle partners. We examined culturable fungi recovered from mycangia of ambrosia beetles associated with trees of Persea humilis (silk bay, one site) and P. americana (avocado, six commercial orchards) that were affected by laurel wilt, an invasive disease caused by a symbiont, Raffaelea lauricola, of an Asian

Injuries from Coleoptera.

The effects of Coleoptera (beetles) on humans in the Australian region are surveyed. Ill-effects range from the immediate trauma of a bite, possibly with minor effects from the beetle's salivary secretions, to the effects of the vesicating beetles of the families Meloidae, Oedemeridae and Staphylinidae, and also the acute corneal erosion that is attributed to the small beetle Orthoperus sp. (family Corylophidae) in southeastern Australia. Reference also is made to other effects that are known as a result of beetle metabolites or structures, such as "carpet beetle dermatitis" from the irritatin

Temporal, spatial, and vertical distribution of plum curculio (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in southeastern peach orchards.

Plum curculio (PC), Conotrachelus nenuphar (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is a key pest of Southeastern US peaches. To facilitate the development of spatiotemporally targeted management approaches and improve the deployment and design of monitoring traps, we studied PC's vertical distribution within peach orchards and whether their dispersal patterns resulted in an orchard edge effect. Non-baited Whalon-modified Tedder's traps (black pyramid traps; ∼120 cm in height) deployed at 3 heights-0 (low), 120 (medium), and 240 (high) cm above the ground-revealed that PC were captured at all hei

Impacts of an oviposition deterrent pheromone and nanoparticle clay on Anthonomus eugenii (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) behavior under laboratory conditions.

Anthonomus eugenii Cano, the pepper weevil, is a devastating pest of peppers (Capsicum spp.). A. eugenii is a pest in both field and greenhouse pepper production across North America, with field production generally impacted in Central America, Mexico, the southern United States, and Hawaii, and greenhouse production being impacted in the northern United States and Canada. The life cycle of A. eugenii primarily occurs inside a pepper fruit, protecting these stages from contact-based insecticidal sprays. Only the adult stage is susceptible to chemical management strategies. However, these strat

Evaluation of the efficiency of tree injection of Norway spruce against the European spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus) (Coleoptera: Scolytinae).

BACKGROUND: Ips typographus is the most important pest of Norway spruce (Picea abies), responsible for large-scale outbreaks in Central Europe that have led to extensive mortality of spruce stands. Control strategies rely primarily on timely sanitary felling, while other methods, including tree injection, play only a supplementary role. RESULTS: In 2022 and 2023, the efficacy of tree injection with emamectin benzoate was evaluated on Norway spruce. At each of 10 study sites, five trees were injected with 4 mL of 4.5% solution per hole drilled and five control trees were selected. All trees we

Survey for attraction-inhibiting semiochemicals for Ips grandicollis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in its native and invasive ranges.

The eastern 5-spined ips, Ips grandicollis (Eichhoff), is native to the eastern USA and is an invasive pest of exotic pines (Pinus spp.) in Australia. It can kill stressed trees and transmit ophiostomoid fungi that cause blue staining of wood and reduce the commercial value of timber. Ips grandicollis uses semiochemicals produced by conspecifics to locate mates, while semiochemicals from competitors and nonhosts may reduce the reaction to attractants. To investigate methods to exploit these behaviors in a management strategy, we evaluated the impact of 12 potential semiochemical inhibitors of

Flight phenology and influence of region and habitat on the abundance of Xylosandrus germanus and Anisandrus maiche (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) in New York.

The non-native wood-boring and symbiotic fungus-culturing Xylosandrus germanus (Blandford) was first reported in New York apple orchards in 2013. Trapping surveys have been conducted annually since to assist growers in timely applications of preventative control measures. In 2021, a similar-looking introduced species, Anisandrus maiche (Kurentsov), was identified in traps in west central New York. Anisandrus maiche was first recorded in 2005 in Pennsylvania but its history in New York was unclear due to potential misidentification. We collected and identified ambrosia beetles using ethanol-bai

Neem-Extract Formulation on Hypothenemus hampei Preference and Performance in Arabica Coffee Fruits and Artificial Diet.

Coffee berry borer (CBB) Hypothenemus hampei is a major biotic threat to coffee production worldwide. Studies have reported negative effects on CBB by oil-based formulations of neem (Azadirachta indica), but little information is available for other neem-extract formulations. This study evaluated CBB preference and performance in arabica coffee fruits and artificial diet treated with a neem-extract formulation (Openeem Plus®) in the field and laboratory conditions. Field experiments were performed using CBB females artificially infested in cherry or green coffee fruits confined in voile-fabric

Fusarium kuroshium is the primary fungal symbiont of an ambrosia beetle, Euwallacea fornicatus, and can kill mango tree in Japan.

This study identifies fungi associated with Euwallacea fornicatus and determines whether these fungal species play the role of primary symbiont. E. fornicatus adults that emerged from the branches of infested trees in Okinawa main island, Japan, were collected and used to isolate fungi. Fusarium kuroshium and Penicillium citrinum were the most dominant fungal associates of females and males, respectively. F. kuroshium was much more frequently isolated from the head, including mycangia (fungus-carrying organs), of females than any other body parts. We inoculated healthy mango saplings with F. k

Attraction of the Euwallacea sp. near fornicatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) to Quercivorol and to Infestations in Avocado.

The Euwallacea sp. near fornicatus (Euwallacea sp. 1 hereafter) feeds on many woody shrubs and trees and is a pest of avocado, Persea americana Mill., in several countries including Israel and the United States. Quercivorol baits are commercially available for Euwallacea sp. 1 females (males do not fly), but their attractive strength compared to other pheromones and potential for mass trapping are unknown.
