European eating disorders review : the journal of the Eating Disorders Association2019eng
Reduced perception of bodily signals and low levels of intuitive eating have been reported in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) compared with normal-weight individuals. However, findings have been inconsistent and treatment progress might account for some of these inconsistencies. Thirty-seven inpatients with AN and 39 normal-weight controls completed a heartbeat perception task and the Intuitive Eating Scale-2. Patients with AN reported lower intuitive eating than controls, whereas interoceptive sensitivity did not differ between groups. Higher interoceptive sensitivity was related to highe

AIMS: Taste modifies eating behaviour, impacting body weight and potentially obesity development. The Obese Taste Bud (OTB) Study is a prospective cohort study launched in 2020 at the University of Leipzig Obesity Centre in cooperation with the HI-MAG Institute. OTB will test the hypothesis that taste cell homeostasis and taste perception are linked to obesity. Here, we provide the study design, data collection process and baseline characteristics.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants presenting overweight, obesity or normal weight undergo taste and smell tests, anthropometric, and taste bud d

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Malnutrition screening tools often include questions about unintentional weight loss (UWL). It is unclear whether individuals who intentionally desire to lose weight or perceive themselves as overweight interpret questions regarding UWL accurately. We assessed potential misclassification of UWL-related questions in these groups.
METHOD: Data from the Lifelines cohort was used (ñ125.000, age >18 years). Prevalence ratios (PRs) were calculated with a simple question regarding UWL as the dependent variable and the desire to lose weight and perception of one's body weight (too he

The perception that hormonal contraception causes weight gain is a general belief that frequently hinders the initiation and continuation of effective family planning. This narrative review analyses data from Cochrane systematic reviews and recent pharmacogenomic studies to separate patient perception from metabolic reality. Analysis of high-quality data, including Cochrane systematic reviews, indicates that the association between Combined Hormonal Contraceptives (CHCs)-including oral pills, the transdermal patch, and the vaginal ring-and weight gain is not supported by consistent high-qualit

The effects of lifting boxes without handles, pulling long distances, carrying different size boxes, combining three handling tasks, and lifting with extended horizontal reach were studied using a psychophysical methodology. Six male industrial workers performed 42 variations of lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, and carrying tasks. Lifting boxes without handles produced consistent decreases (median, 16%) in maximum acceptable weights when compared with lifting boxes with handles. Lifting with extended horizontal reach (approximately 48 cm) produced consistent decreases (median, 48%) in maxi

BACKGROUND: The use of mesh is not without complications. Decreasing the mesh weight with the light-weight (LW) mesh may improve tissue growth and diminish mesh-related complications, yet, clinically, there are conflicting results regarding the influence of different weight meshes in ventral/incisional hernia repair. The aim of the present study is to compare the outcomes of different weight meshes for ventral/incisional hernia repair.
METHODS: The major databases (PubMed, Embase, Springer, and Cochrane Library) were searched, and all studies were published through January 1, 2022, using the

BACKGROUND: Regardless of competitive athletes' body image pressures, only few studies have focused on adolescent sport participants' body image and the findings are inconclusive. Furthermore, the role of competitive goals in sports on adolescents' body size perception has not been studied. We examined the factors associated with adolescents' competitive goals in sports and body size perception, and the associations between adolescents' competitive goals in sports and body size perception.
METHODS: The cross-sectional study consisted of 475 goal-oriented sports club participants and 936 refer

INTRODUCTION: Rates of overweight among US children have been rising over the past three decades. Changes in lifestyle behaviors, including dietary and physical activity habits, have been examined thoroughly to identify correlates of weight status in children. Youth in rural US Appalachia are at a disproportionately greater risk for obesity and related health complications. Inadequate physical activity and poor dietary habits are two primary causes of obesity that have been noted in West Virginia adolescents. Few existing data describes the decisional balance in performing lifestyle behaviors,

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is a critical health issue, and West Virginia is a state with an exceptionally high obesity rate. There are evidence-based medical guidelines for treating obesity utilized by medical weight management programs. The primary purpose of this study is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the acceptability of an academic medical weight management program that utilizes guidelines-based treatment for obesity.
METHODS: This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach. Semi-structured interviews were completed with 20 participants enrolled in an academic medical weight m

OBJECTIVE: Asthma and obesity are two of the most common chronic childhood illnesses. The purpose of this study was to better understand the relationship between co-morbid asthma and obesity in children aged 4-17 and whether it impacts the caregiver's perception of health and/or healthcare utilization.
METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) datasets from 2007 to 2018. Cumulative logistic regression models were used to analyze the caregiver's perception of health, received healthcare, and overnight hospital stay as dependent var

Disturbances in body perception are a consistent feature of Restrictive Eating Disorders (REDs). In adult patients diagnosed with REDs, body dissatisfaction and overestimation of body weight have been associated with altered tactile acuity and biases in proprioceptive localization. Whether similar alterations are present in adolescents-when the disorder often emerges-remains unclear. This study aimed to characterize possible alterations in tactile and body perception in adolescents diagnosed with REDs. Patients (N = 48) and age-matched healthy controls (HCs, N = 45) completed tasks measuring t

We recently described an increase of pain thresholds and tolerances for thermal and electrical pain in patients suffering from adjustment disorder (AD). Furthermore, we presented evidence that pain perception in major depressive disorder (MDD) depends on pain modality, with thresholds for ischemic pain being decreased compared to increased thermal and electrical pain thresholds. Here, we investigated perception of experimentally induced ischemic pain in 15 patients suffering from AD (subtype with depressive symptoms) and controls matched for age and sex in order to examine whether a similar pa

Obesity is increasingly prevalent in people with HIV (PWH) and associated with multiple metabolic derangements. Understanding body weight perceptions and discrepancies with actual body weight is an important step for better weight management interventions. The Silhouette Figure Rating Scale (SFRS) was used to assess self-perception of body weight and the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) was used to rate body image concerns among participants in a low-income multiethnic HIV clinic in Houston, Texas. Of 202 participants, 60% underestimated their body mass index (BMI) category. A desired overweight
