Assessing the efficacy and mechanisms of glycol-contaminated water treatment through floating treatment wetlands.

The growing concerns surrounding water pollution and the degradation of ecosystems worldwide have led to an increased use of nature-based solutions (NbSs). This study assessed the feasibility of using floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) as an NbS to treat propylene glycol-contaminated water and quantitatively investigated different removal pathways. With an environmentally relevant concentration of propylene glycol (1,250 mg/L), FTWs containing Acorus calamus and mixed species demonstrated the highest average glycol mass removal efficacy (99%), followed by Carex acutiformis (98%), Juncus effusu

Spatiotemporal dynamic changes of antibiotic resistance genes in constructed wetlands and associated influencing factors.

A better understanding of the spatiotemporal dynamics and influencing factors of sulfonamide antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) distribution in subsurface flow constructed wetlands is essential to improve the ARGs removal efficiency. The spatiotemporal dynamics of sulfonamide ARGs were explored in the vertical upflow subsurface flow constructed wetland (VUSFCW). The results showed that the absolute abundance of ARGs presented a trend of bottom layer > middle layer > top layer. The relative abundance of ARGs decreased significantly from the bottom layer to the middle layer, but increased in the

Thermal and asphyxia exposure risk to freshwater fish in feral-pig-damaged tropical wetlands.

Acute thermal and asphyxia exposure risks for freshwater fish occupying three tropical wetland typologies were examined. Field water-quality data revealed that fish in wetlands grazed by pigs had the highest exposure risks, because they are shallow and heavily damaged by pig activities. In contrast, with the exception is dissolved oxygen (which still reached critical conditions because of aquatic vegetation respiration), deeper permanent and pig-managed wetlands provides the best opportunity for the same fish species to survive in a heavily pig-modified tropical landscape.

Contracting infectious diseases in Sub-Saharan African wetlands: A question of use? A review.

Worldwide the pressure on water is increasing. In parts of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), natural wetlands constitute the only accessible water resources, providing water free of charge, agricultural potential and livelihoods in otherwise uninhabitable landscapes, which is why they are being used extensively. The degradation and contamination of water which result from the use of wetlands has the potential to spread disease-causing microorganisms and provide increased breeding habitats for disease vectors, Despite this importance, case studies are lacking and knowledge gaps remain about whether and

A Miocene hyperdiverse crocodylian community reveals peculiar trophic dynamics in proto-Amazonian mega-wetlands.

Amazonia contains one of the world's richest biotas, but origins of this diversity remain obscure. Onset of the Amazon River drainage at approximately 10.5 Ma represented a major shift in Neotropical ecosystems, and proto-Amazonian biotas just prior to this pivotal episode are integral to understanding origins of Amazonian biodiversity, yet vertebrate fossil evidence is extraordinarily rare. Two new species-rich bonebeds from late Middle Miocene proto-Amazonian deposits of northeastern Peru document the same hyperdiverse assemblage of seven co-occurring crocodylian species. Besides the large-b

Co-occurrence of Photochemical and Microbiological Transformation Processes in Open-Water Unit Process Wetlands.

The fate of anthropogenic trace organic contaminants in surface waters can be complex due to the occurrence of multiple parallel and consecutive transformation processes. In this study, the removal of five antiviral drugs (abacavir, acyclovir, emtricitabine, lamivudine and zidovudine) via both bio- and phototransformation processes, was investigated in laboratory microcosm experiments simulating an open-water unit process wetland receiving municipal wastewater effluent. Phototransformation was the main removal mechanism for abacavir, zidovudine, and emtricitabine, with half-lives (t1/2,photo)

Spatial distribution of mercury in southeastern Alaskan streams influenced by glaciers, wetlands, and salmon.

Southeastern Alaska is a remote coastal-maritime ecosystem that is experiencing increased deposition of mercury (Hg) as well as rapid glacier loss. Here we present the results of the first reported survey of total and methyl Hg (MeHg) concentrations in regional streams and biota. Overall, streams draining large wetland areas had higher Hg concentrations in water, mayflies, and juvenile salmon than those from glacially-influenced or recently deglaciated watersheds. Filtered MeHg was positively correlated with wetland abundance. Aqueous Hg occurred predominantly in the particulate fraction of gl

Mitigating chlorite stress to sustain nitrogen removal in reclaimed water using bioelectrochemical constructed wetlands.

Residual chlorite (ClO2-) in reclaimed water has become an easily overlooked emerging contaminant, which exhibits significant cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, and ecological hazards in aquatic environments. Considering the redox potential difference between chlorite and nitrate, this study proposes a novel enhancement strategy utilizing bio-electrochemical constructed wetlands (BE-CWs). The nitrogen removal performance and microbial responses of conventional constructed wetlands (CWs), microbial fuel cell-coupled CWs, and microbial electrolysis cell-coupled CWs under ClO2- stress were systematicall

Enhanced nitrification-denitrification coupling for high-rate nitrogen removal in tidal flow constructed wetlands.

Achieving efficient nitrogen removal in tidal flow constructed wetlands (TFCWs) under high hydraulic loading rates (HLRs) remains challenging because rapid hydraulic exchange may disrupt the balance between nitrification and denitrification by altering oxygen and carbon distributions. In this study, an integrated operational strategy involving substrate alkalinity, carbon availability, and hydraulic conditions was evaluated in TFCWs treating real domestic wastewater. The alkaline steel slag-zeolite substrate maintained stable NH4+-N removal (>93%) at elevated HLRs (up to 2.51 m d-1), although

Tricks and tracks of hybrid constructed wetlands: critical review on emerging contaminant removal pathways.

Emerging contaminants (ECs), including pharmaceuticals, antibiotics, personal care products, endocrine-disrupting compounds and persistent industrial chemicals, are increasingly detected in wastewater effluents because many are poorly removed by conventional treatment and may form biologically active transformation products. This review critically evaluates hybrid constructed wetlands (HCWs) as engineered biodegradation platforms for EC attenuation, with emphasis on microbial pathways, redox-zonation and substrate-mediated transformation. HCWs integrate vertical-flow, horizontal subsurface-flo

Hematite-facilitated anaerobic oxidation of organics: Novel strategy to alleviate bioclogging in constructed wetlands.

Bioclogging from organic accumulation significantly limits efficiency and longevity of constructed wetlands (CWs). In this study, hematite was introduced to enhance the oxidation of organics by dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR). Compared to gravel CWs (G-CWs), hematite CWs (H-CWs) enhanced the removal of COD, ammonium, and phosphate by 12 %, 46 %, and 72 %, while reducing CH4 and N2O emissions by 69 % and 36 %. The increase in extracellular polymers on G-CWs substrate surface was 5.96 times of H-CWs. This increase was the main reason for the significant reductions in porosity and hydraulic co

Eco-resilience of China's mangrove wetlands: The impact of heavy metal pollution and dynamics.

Mangrove forests in China have significantly degraded over the past several decades primarily due to rapid economic growth and land reclamation for aquaculture and infrastructure development. Among various threats, heavy metal pollution, primarily from urbanization, agricultural runoff, and industrial runoff, poses a substantial risk to mangroves in China. It impairs their ecological functions, limiting biodiversity and reducing their natural ability to sequester carbon and detoxify coastal areas. Despite these challenges, the mangrove ecosystem's resilience in China has not been completely co

Heterogeneous Antibiotic Resistance Gene Removal Impedes Evaluation of Constructed Wetlands for Effective Greywater Treatment.

Microorganisms carrying antimicrobial resistance genes are often found in greywater. As the reuse of greywater becomes increasingly needed, it is imperative to determine how greywater treatment impacts antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). Using qPCR and SmartChip™ qPCR, we characterized ARG patterns in greywater microbial communities before, during, and after treatment by a recirculating vertical flow constructed wetland. In parallel, we examined the impact of greywater-treated irrigation on soil, including the occurrence of emerging micropollutants and the taxonomic and ARG compositions of

Degradation products and transformation pathways of sulfamethoxazole chlorination disinfection by-products in constructed wetlands.

Antibiotics and available chlorine coexist in multiple aquatic environments, and thus antibiotics and their chlorinated disinfection by-products (Cl-DBPs) have been a great concern for the nature and human health. Herein, the degradation intermediates and transformation pathways of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) Cl-DBPs in constructed wetlands (CWs) were investigated. A total of five SMX Cl-DBPs and their twenty degradation products in CWs was identified in this study. SMX and its Cl-DBPs influenced the biodegradation rather than the adsorption process in CWs. S1 atom on sulfonyl group of SMX had the

Phenolic compounds weaken the impact of drought on soil enzyme activity in global wetlands.

Soil enzymes play a central role in carbon and nutrient cycling, and their activities can be affected by drought-induced oxygen exposure. However, a systematic global estimate of enzyme sensitivity to drought in wetlands is still lacking. Through a meta-analysis of 55 studies comprising 761 paired observations, this study found that phosphorus-related enzyme activity increased by 38% as result of drought in wetlands, while the majority of other soil enzyme activities remained stable. The expansion of vascular plants under long-term drought significantly promoted the accumulation of phenolic co

Distribution and correlation of iron oxidizers and carbon-fixing microbial communities in natural wetlands.

Most microaerophilic Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria (mFeOB) belonging to the family Gallionellaceae are autotrophic microorganisms that can use inorganic carbon to drive carbon sequestration in wetlands. However, the relationship between microorganisms involved in Fe and C cycling is not well understood. Here, soil samples were collected from different wetlands to explore the distribution and correlation of Gallionella-related mFeOB and carbon-fixing microorganisms containing cbbL and cbbM genes. A significant positive correlation was found between the abundances of mFeOB and the cbbL gene, as well

Potential of constructed wetlands microcosms for the removal of veterinary pharmaceuticals from livestock wastewater.

The aim of the present work was to evaluate, at microcosm level, the capacity of constructed wetlands (CWs) to remove veterinary pharmaceutical compounds, from wastewater. Results indicated that CWs have potential to mitigate the release of veterinary drugs, namely enrofloxacin (ENR, a fluoroquinolone) and tetracycline (TET, tetracyclines family). Removal efficiencies of 94% and 98% where achieved for TET and ENR, respectively, when treating pigfarm wastewater effluent doped at 100 μg L(-1) drug level, along twelve weeks. Occurrence of adsorption of the drugs to CWs substrate may be the predom

Methylmercury in water, sediment, and invertebrates in created wetlands of Rouge Park, Toronto, Canada.

Thousands of hectares of wetlands are created annually because wetlands provide beneficial ecosystem services. Wetlands are also key sites for production of the bioaccumulative neurotoxin methylmercury (MeHg), but little is known about MeHg production in created systems. Here, we studied methylmercury in sediment, water, and invertebrates in created wetlands of various ages. Sediment MeHg reached 8 ng g(-1) in the newest wetland, which was significantly greater than in natural, control wetlands. This trend was mirrored in several invertebrate taxa, whose concentrations reached as high as 1.6 μ
