[What is the value of the whole body spiral CT in the primary radiological imaging of severely injured children?].

AIM: Whole body spiral CT scans have become a routine method in the radiological imaging of severely injured patients in emergency rooms of an increasing number of hospitals. The routine use of CT scans is, however, still discussed controversially, especially with regard to its use in children. This is mainly due to the reportedly higher level of exposure to radiation of CT scans as compared to plain radiographs. The aim of the present study was to compare the dose of exposure to radiation of a whole body CT scan to that of a plain radiograph protocol in an animal model for severely injured ch

Accelerating Whole-Body Diffusion-weighted MRI with Deep Learning-based Denoising Image Filters.

PURPOSE: To use deep learning to improve the image quality of subsampled images (number of acquisitions = 1 [NOA1]) to reduce whole-body diffusion-weighted MRI (WBDWI) acquisition times. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Both retrospective and prospective patient groups were used to develop a deep learning-based denoising image filter (DNIF) model. For initial model training and validation, 17 patients with metastatic prostate cancer with acquired WBDWI NOA1 and NOA9 images (acquisition period, 2015-2017) were retrospectively included. An additional 22 prospective patients with advanced prostate cancer,

The added value of whole-body magnetic resonance imaging in the management of patients with advanced breast cancer.

This study investigates the impact of whole-body MRI (WB-MRI) in addition to CT of chest-abdomen-pelvis (CT-CAP) and 18F-FDG PET/CT (PET/CT) on systemic treatment decisions in standard clinical practice for patients with advanced breast cancer (ABC). WB-MRI examinations in ABC patients were extracted from our WB-MRI registry (2009-2017). Patients under systemic treatment who underwent WB-MRI and a control examination (CT-CAP or PET/CT) were included. Data regarding progressive disease (PD) reported either on WB-MRI or on the control examinations were collected. Data regarding eventual change i

[Whole-body magnetic resonance imaging in a patient with an occult abdominal neuroblastoma and opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome].

Opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome is a rare neurological disorder. In children, the etiology varies, although it is a paraneoplastic manifestation (mainly of neuroblastoma) in 40% to 80% of cases. Whole-body MRI promises to be a powerful tool in the search for a possible primary tumor in this condition for which the diagnostic algorithm is yet to be established. We present the case of a two-year-old boy with signs of opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome in whom a retroperitoneal neuroblastoma was detected by whole-body MRI.

[68Ga]Ga-SSO120 PET/CT Imaging in Pediatric Patients with Neuroblastoma: Biodistribution and Whole-Body Radiation Dosimetry.

The clinical standard for neuroblastoma detection is based on targeting the norepinephrine transporter with [123I]MIBG, which has several challenges. Imaging the somatostatin receptor (SSTR) is a strong alternative. In contrast to standard DOTATATE, SSTR antagonist imaging with [68Ga]Ga-satoreotide trizoxetan ([68Ga]-SSO120) can potentially improve lesion detection as it targets both active and inactive SSTRs. We present the biodistribution and radiation exposure results of [68Ga]Ga-SSO120 PET/CT imaging in pediatric patients with neuroblastoma. Methods: Patients age 3-7 y with stage 4 neurobl

Enhancing diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment through brain-heart-gut metabolic networks in whole-body PET imaging.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is the prodromal stage of dementia involving complex interactions between the brain and peripheral organs. Emerging evidence indicates that heart dysfunction and gut microbiota dysbiosis contribute to MCI pathogenesis. Here, we present a framework integrating brain-heart-gut interactions using whole-body positron emission tomography (PET) to enhance brain-only diagnostic performance. Our brain-only model achieves diagnostic performance comparable to that of whole-body PET and shows promising generalizability across four datasets comprising 1,543 whole-body PET a

Three-Dimensional Imaging of Whole-Body Zebrafish Revealed Lipid Disorders Associated with Niemann-Pick Disease Type C1.

Imaging of lipids of whole-body specimens in two-dimensional (2D) analysis provides a global picture of the lipid changes in lipid-disturbed diseases, enabling a better understanding of lipid functions and lipid-modulation processes in different organs. However, 2D imaging of a single cross section can hardly characterize the whole-body lipid alterations. In this work, a three-dimensional matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (3D MALDI-MSI) approach was developed for analysis of whole-body zebrafish, for the first time, and applied to identify altered lipids and

Whole-body magnetic resonance imaging in late-onset Pompe disease: Clinical utility and correlation with functional measures.

Whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (WBMRI) has clinical utility in measuring the amount of fatty infiltration in late-onset Pompe disease (LOPD). Muscle strength and function testing also provide valuable insight to the progression of myopathy seen in these patients. The main purpose of this study was to determine how closely muscle strength and functional testing correlate to the amount of fatty infiltration seen on WBMRI. LOPD patients were followed longitudinally and WBMRI, muscle strength testing using the modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) scale, muscle function testing using the

Low SAR 31 P (multi-echo) spectroscopic imaging using an integrated whole-body transmit coil at 7T.

Phosphorus (31 P) MRSI provides opportunities to monitor potential biomarkers. However, current applications of 31 P MRS are generally restricted to relatively small volumes as small coils are used. Conventional surface coils require high energy adiabatic RF pulses to achieve flip angle homogeneity, leading to high specific absorption rates (SARs), and occupy space within the MRI bore. A birdcage coil behind the bore cover can potentially reduce the SAR constraints massively by use of conventional amplitude modulated pulses without sacrificing patient space. Here, we demonstrate that the integ

Whole-body tissue distribution study of drugs in neonate mice using desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry imaging.

RATIONALE: Although Desorption Electrospray Ionization (DESI) Mass Spectrometry Imaging (MSI) is uniquely suited for whole-body (WB) tissue distribution study of drugs, success in this area has been difficult. Here, we present WB tissue distribution studies using DESI-MSI and a new histological tissue-friendly solvent system. METHODS: Neonate pups were dosed subcutaneously (SC) with clozapine, compound 1, compound 2, or compound 3. Following euthanization by hypothermia, neonates underwent a transcardiac perfusion (saline) to remove blood. After cryosectioning, DESI-MSI was conducted for the

Evaluation of fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose whole body positron emission tomography imaging in the staging of lung cancer.

BACKGROUND: Surgical resection of lung cancer remains the treatment of choice in appropriately staged disease, but conventional imaging techniques have limitations. Positron emission tomography (PET) may improve staging accuracy. METHODS: We studied whole body and localized thoracic PET in staging lung cancer. Standardized uptake value was calculated for the primary lesion. Ninety-seven patients under consideration for surgical resection were included. PET, computed tomography, and clinical staging were compared to stage at operation, biopsy, or final outcome. Mean follow up was 17.5 months.
