Advancing environmental resilience to wildfires: A high-performance stochastic simulation approach for real-time risk assessment and spread prediction.

Effective wildfire management requires rapid and accurate spread predictions to support real-time decision-making. This study presents a high-performance stochastic simulation framework based on Cellular Automata (CA), specifically optimized for "urgent computing" through Python's Numba Just-In-Time (JIT) compilation and thread-level parallelism. The system integrates multivariate data fusion, harmonizing multi-resolution geospatial datasets (30-100 m)-including Digital Elevation Models (DEM), Corine Land Cover (CLC) fuel maps, and multi-temporal vegetation indices-with a dedicated firebrand s

The adoption of climate-smart agriculture to address wildfires in the Maya Golden Landscape of Belize: Smallholder farmers' perceptions.

Ecosystems around the globe are enduring wildfires with greater frequency, intensity, and severity and this trend is projected to continue as a result of climate change. Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) has been proposed as a strategy to prevent wildfires and mitigate climate change impacts; however, it remains poorly understood as a strategy to prevent wildfires. Therefore, the authors propose a multimethod approach that combines mapping of wildfire susceptibility and social surveys to identify priority areas, main factors influencing the adoption of CSA practices, barriers to their implementa

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, and Wildfires: A Fifth-Year Postdisaster Evaluation among Residents of Fort McMurray.

Background: Over 90,000 residents had to be evacuated from Fort McMurray (FMM), Alberta, Canada due to the wildfire that engulfed the city in May 2016. Overall, about 2400 homes or 10% of the housing stock in Fort McMurray were destroyed. The fire consumed about 200,000 hectors of forest, reaching into Saskatchewan. During major disasters, communities’ infrastructure is disrupted, and psychological, economic, and environmental effects are felt for years afterwards. Objective: Five years after the wildfire disaster, this study assessed the prevalence rate of major depressive disorder (MDD) and

Trace gases and particulate matter emissions from wildfires and agricultural burning in Northeastern Mexico during the 2000 fire season.

An inventory of air pollutants emitted from forest and agricultural fires in Northeastern Mexico for the period of January to August of 2000 is presented. The emissions estimates were calculated using an emissions factor methodology. The inventory accounts for the emission of carbon monoxide (CO), methane, nonmethane hydrocarbons, ammonia, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter (PM). Particulate matter emissions include estimates for fine PM and coarse PM. A total of 2479 wildfires were identified in the domain for the period of interest, which represented approximately 810,000 acres burned a

Recent high-severity wildfires in a dry-conifer landscape are unprecedented over five centuries and foretell future forest loss.

Dry forests of the western United States evolved with frequent, spatially extensive, low-severity fires, followed by a century of fire exclusion. Recently, these same forests have experienced large and increasingly severe fires causing widespread forest loss. To what extent do modern high-severity fires depart from pre-1900 fire regimes, and how do these departures affect the future persistence of dry-conifer forests? We address these questions using a multiscalar approach that combines the largest landscape-scale tree-ring fire-scar network in North America with neutral landscape model simula

Dynamics of Antimicrobial Resistance Carriage in Koalas (Phascolarctos Cinereus) and Pteropid Bats (Pteropus Poliocephalus) Before, During and After Wildfires.

In the 2019-2020 summer, wildfires decimated the Australian bush environment and impacted wildlife species, including koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) and grey headed flying fox pups (Pteropid bats, Pteropus poliocephalus). Consequently, hundreds of koalas and thousands of bat pups entered wildlife hospitals with fire-related injuries/illness, where some individuals received antimicrobial therapy. This study investigated the dynamics of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in pre-fire, fire-affected and post-fire koalas and Pteropid bat pups. PCR and DNA sequencing were used to screen DNA samples ext

Carbonaceous Components Underlying Wildfire Smoke PM2.5-Associated Mortality in Older U.S. Adults.

Wildland fire activity has increased in the U.S., elevating population exposure to smoke-derived fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Emerging studies suggest higher toxicity per unit mass for PM2.5 from wildfire smoke. However, source-resolved evidence on long-term mortality effects of major carbonaceous components in smoke PM2.5 remains scarce. We linked annual, high-resolution estimates of smoke and non-smoke PM2.5 mass and carbonaceous matter to 77,470,752 Medicare beneficiaries during 2002-2019 and fit stratified Cox models. Long-term exposure to smoke PM2.5 mass and its carbonaceous fraction

Wildfire Evacuation Lessons From La Ronge, a Northern Saskatchewan Site: Physician Debriefings.

The 2025 La Ronge wildfire evacuation highlights vulnerabilities in rural health system readiness during climate-driven emergencies. Reflections from 12 family physicians revealed challenges in communication redundancy, clarity of emergency governance, continuity of care for evacuated patients and the emotional strain of dual responder-evacuee roles. These insights, gathered through a post-evacuation debrief, represent physicians' perspectives rather than assessments of organizational performance. The findings echo lessons from previous Canadian wildfires and inform policy directions to streng

Urban mobility responses to wildfire smoke-related air quality advisories in Montréal, Canada.

Wildfire smoke events are increasing in frequency and severity, yet evidence on how urban populations modify their mobility in response to air quality advisories remains limited. In this work we apply time-series forecasting modelling to four mobility datasets (bike-share, metro rail, bus, and recreational running). We examine changes to daily activity counts in Montréal, Canada during wildfire smoke-related air quality advisory days from 2022 through 2025. Controlling for seasonality, weather, holidays, and major events, we find that advisories are associated with a shift from active to enclo

Acute Mental Health Impacts and Mid-Term Symptom Trajectories Following Wildfire Exposure.

This longitudinal cohort study examined acute and mid-term mental health impacts among 4346 survivors of the 2018 Camp Fire in Northern California using a retrospective survey that asked participants to report symptoms at one, three, and six months post-wildfire. Forty-one percent of participants reported at least one mental health symptom three weeks after the wildfire. Mental health symptoms declined over the six-month follow-up. The mean number of mental health symptoms was 3.7 (95% CI, 3.3-4.1) at three weeks, 3.3 (3.0-3.7) at one month, 3.1 (2.8-3.4) at three months, and 2.7 (2.5-3.1) at

ASCA-YOLO: Adaptive Sparse and Context-Aware YOLO Algorithm for Forest Wildfire Detection.

Combining Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) remote sensing with computer vision has become an efficient approach to detect forest wildfires. Nevertheless, existing methods still face several challenges, including missed detection of small fire spots and slender smoke under limited computational resources, false alarms caused by complex forest backgrounds, and insufficient adaptability to the irregular and dynamic morphology of fire and smoke. To address these issues, an improved YOLO26-based model, termed ASCA-YOLO, is proposed. Specifically, FWAMSConv module is introduced to improve multi-scale i

Wildfire smoke PM2.5 and mortality rate in the contiguous United States: A causal modeling study.

The relationships between chronic exposure to wildfire smoke PM2.5 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter of ≤2.5 μm) and mortality remain poorly understood, with causal evidence being particularly scarce. In this ecological study, we used a doubly robust method, incorporating flexible generalized propensity score estimation that captured potential nonlinearity and interactions among confounders and relaxed the distribution form assumption for exposure, to estimate the effects of annual exposure to wildfire smoke PM2.5 on all-cause and cause-specific mortality in the contiguous United S

Wildfire and Smoke Risk Communication: A Systematic Literature Review from a Health Equity Focus.

Effective wildfire smoke risk and evacuation communication is urgently needed to avert unnecessary deaths as wildfires increase in frequency and intensity. Human exposure to wildfires has doubled in the last two decades. Low-income, marginalized communities are the most disadvantaged in their ability to respond. A systematic literature review of wildfire and wildfire smoke risk communication research between 2014 and 2024 was conducted. Web of Science and Scopus databases were searched using the keywords "wildfire", "communication", "wildfire smoke", "risk", and "public health", resulting in 2

A dataset to support wildland fire and fuel management in Greece created with stochastic wildfire simulations.

The potential spread and intensity of wildfires can be estimated with fire modelling simulators that produce valuable datasets which can be used during the prevention and suppression stages by fire management agencies. In the absence of observational data for all potential ignition sources, since a fire has not yet occurred or has burned many decades ago, fire behavior algorithms such as the Minimum Travel Time incorporated in the FSim simulator can be used to reveal these hidden fire patterns and trajectories. FSim is widely used in the USA for that purpose and its outputs, i.e., fire perimet

The firestorm within: A narrative review of extreme heat and wildfire smoke effects on brain health.

Climate change is generating increased heatwaves and wildfires across much of the world. With these escalating environmental changes comes greater impacts on human health leading to increased numbers of people suffering from heat- and wildfire smoke-associated respiratory and cardiovascular impairment. One area of health impact of climate change that has received far less attention is the effects of extreme heat and wildfire smoke exposure on human brain health. As elevated temperatures, and wildfire-associated smoke, are increasingly experienced simultaneously over summer periods, understandi

Mixtures modeling identifies chemical inducers versus repressors of toxicity associated with wildfire smoke.

Exposure to wildfire smoke continues to be a growing threat to public health, yet the chemical components in wildfire smoke that primarily drive toxicity and associated disease are largely unknown. This study utilized a suite of computational approaches to identify groups of chemicals induced by variable biomass burn conditions that were associated with biological responses in the mouse lung, including pulmonary immune response and injury markers. Smoke condensate samples were collected and characterized, resulting in chemical distribution information for 86 constituents across ten different e
