BACKGROUND: Individuals with Williams syndrome (WS) have an elevated risk for anxiety disorders throughout the life span, making it a research priority to identify the individual factors associated with anxiety. Most of the existing literature is based on questionnaire data and suggests that impaired executive functions (EF) increase the risk for anxiety in WS. The aim of this study was to use direct measures by trained clinicians to investigate the effects of general intelligence, inhibition, sustained attention, and working memory on anxiety in WS, to further elucidate potential underlying m

AIMS: Williams Syndrome (WS) is a microdeletion syndrome (chromosome 7q11.23) characterized by typical facial features, cardiovascular disease, behavioural symptoms, and mild intellectual disability (ID). The aim of this study was to assess the rates of incontinence and psychological problems in persons with WS.
METHODS: 231 individuals with WS were recruited through the German parent support group (52.0% male, mean age 19.4 years). Faecal incontinence (FI) was diagnosed from the age of 4 years and nocturnal enuresis (NE) and daytime urinary incontinence (DUI) of 5 years onwards. The Parental

BACKGROUND: There is recent interest in using music making as an empirically supported intervention for various neurodevelopmental disorders due to music's engagement of perceptual-motor mapping processes. However, little is known about music learning in populations with developmental disabilities. Williams syndrome (WS) is a neurodevelopmental genetic disorder whose characteristic auditory strengths and visual-spatial weaknesses map onto the processes used to learn to play a musical instrument.
METHODS: We identified correlates of novel musical instrument learning in WS by teaching 46 childr

Williams Syndrome (WS) is described as displaying a dissociation within memory systems. As the integrity of hippocampal formation (HF) is determinant for memory performance, we examined HF volumes and its association with memory measures in a group of WS and in a typically development group. A significantly reduced intracranial content was found in WS, despite no differences were observed for HF absolute volumes between groups. When volumes were normalized, left HF was increased in WS. Moreover, a lack of the normal right > left HF asymmetry was observed in WS. No positive correlations were fo

This study investigated whether there are distinct types of semantic knowledge with distinct representational bases during development. The representation of semantic knowledge in a teenage child (S.T.) with Williams syndrome was explored for the categories of animals, fruit, and vegetables, manipulable objects, and nonmanipulable objects. S.T.'s lexical stores were of a normal size but the volume of "sensory feature" semantic knowledge she generated in oral descriptions was reduced. In visual recognition decisions, S.T. made more false positives to nonitems than did controls. Although overall

We report a toddler with Williams syndrome (WS) complicated by congenital heart disease and a seizure-like episode who died suddenly several hours after uneventful cardiac catheterization. The cardiovascular anomalies and their association with sudden death as well as the clinical neurological and neuropathologic abnormalities identified in WS are delineated and discussed.

Williams syndrome (WS) is an uncommon genetic syndrome due to a deletion of several genes on chromosome 7. The syndrome is associated with dysmorphic facies, neurological manifestations, idiopathic hypercalcemia, and cardiac abnormalities, particularly supravalvular aortic stenosis (SVAS). Children with Williams syndrome may have chronic serous otitis media and/or obstructive sleep apnea. Hyperacusis is also commonly seen in these children. We report a case of sudden death at the time of tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy and bilateral tympanostomy tube placement in a child with Williams syndrome. Al

A patient with Williams syndrome, craniosynostosis, and infantile spasms is described. At age 6 months, the infant demonstrated infantile spasms and craniosynostosis and was operated on for craniosynostosis and treated with adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) for the infantile spasms. ACTH completely controlled the seizures, but was halted because of the progression of ventricular hypertrophy. The seizure returned, and he was found to have elfin face, failure-to-thrive, developmental delay, and dental malformation in addition to congenital heart defects. High-resolution chromosome analysis reve

Behavioral and emotional disturbance was assessed in 70 children and adolescents with Williams syndrome. They were compared with an epidemiological control population, which was statistically controlled for age, gender, and level of mental retardation. Those with Williams syndrome were more likely to be diagnosed as suffering psychiatric disorder. The disorder was characterized by anxiety, hyperactivity, preoccupations, and inappropriate interpersonal relating. Significantly increased rates of other individual symptoms were also found, including sleep disturbance and hyperacusis. These results

Forty-two subjects with classic features of Williams syndrome were evaluated to ascertain the prevalence and severity of the ophthalmologic features associated with the disorder. Twenty-six (62%) had a stellate pattern of the anterior iris stroma which was observed only in individuals with blue or hazel iris color. Twelve (29%) had strabismus, most commonly esotropia. Hypermetropic discs were noted in 18 of 33 patients (55%), a simplex vertical branching of the central retinal vessels at the disc in 23 (70%), and situs inversus vasorum in 5 (15%). No subject had accentuated vascular tortuosity

Individuals with Williams syndrome may experience challenges in executive function relative to neurotypical individuals, including inhibition. However, previous studies have reported conflicting findings on the extent of these differences. This may partially reflect a failure to account for the effects of working memory on inhibition task performance. This study, therefore, examined the extent of any differences in inhibition between individuals with Williams syndrome and neurotypical children, while investigating whether such differences are moderated by concurrent working memory load and ind

Williams syndrome (WS) is a rare genetic disorder caused by a microdeletion of chromosome 7q11.23. Although the mortality rate of patients with WS is not very high, sudden cardiac death can occur, particularly in cases complicated by coronary artery stenosis. A 3-month-old female infant with supravalvular aortic stenosis and peripheral pulmonary stenosis was discovered unconscious in bed by her mother. She was immediately transferred to an emergency hospital but succumbed despite multiple attempts as resuscitation. DNA microarray analysis revealed microdeletions of 7q11.23 and 16p11.2, confirm

BACKGROUND: Specific phobia (SP) is the most common anxiety disorder among children with Williams syndrome (WS); prevalence rates derived from Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-based diagnostic interviews range from 37% to 56%. We evaluated the effects of gender, age, intellectual abilities and/or behaviour regulation difficulties on the likelihood that a child with WS would be diagnosed with SP.
METHODS: A total of 194 6-17 year-olds with WS were evaluated. To best characterise the relations between the predictors and the probability of a SP diagnosis, we explored not onl

William John Adie was an Australian neurologist in the early 20th century responsible for extensively describing the tonically dilated pupil associated with absent deep tendon reflexes - both features of a syndrome that now bears his name. In addition to other neurological syndromes, he was also significant in delineating narcolepsy through his clinical essays and case series. His ophthalmic and neurologic contributions have served the test of time and played an important role in the modern understanding of Adie syndrome and narcolepsy. This report reviews Adie's medical contributions, extensi

BACKGROUND: Although people with Williams syndrome (WS) are often characterized as friendly and sociable with relatively good general language abilities, there is emerging evidence of pragmatic difficulties and trouble comprehending aspects of non-literal language.
AIMS: The main aim was to investigate the comprehension of sarcasm, metaphor and simile in WS relative to typically developing controls. A secondary aim was to examine the association between non-literal language comprehension and a range of other cognitive abilities, both in WS and in the typically developing population.

Williams-Beuren syndrome is a multysistem genetic disorder caused by the 1.6Mb hemizygous deletion involving the elastin gene in the region q11.23 of chromosome 7. The phenotype of Williams-Beuren syndrome is extremelly variable but the most common findings include cardiovascular disease, distinctive facies, mental retardation, a specific congitive profile, endocrine abnormalities, growth retardation and connective tissue abnormalities. Although gastrointestinal difficulties are one of the most constant and prominent finding of the syndrome, including gastro-esophageal reflux (GER), poor suckl
