Cryptosporidiosis-associated mortality following a massive waterborne outbreak in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

OBJECTIVES: This study estimated the magnitude of cryptosporidiosis-associated mortality in the Milwaukee vicinity for 2 years following a massive waterborne outbreak. METHODS: Death certificates were reviewed. RESULTS: During approximately 2 years before the outbreak, cryptosporidiosis was listed as an underlying or contributing cause of death on the death certificates of four Milwaukee-vicinity residents. In the approximately 2 years after the outbreak, this number was 54, of whom 85% had acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) listed as the underlying cause of death. In the first 6 mont

Care arrangements for children exposed to maternal incarceration: Evidence from Wisconsin.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines care arrangements for children before, during, and after maternal incarceration. BACKGROUND: Family systems theory suggests that maternal incarceration may drastically alter family life for marginalized children, but little is known about how children's care arrangements change during and after maternal incarceration versus other forms of criminal legal system (CLS) involvement. METHOD: Leveraging longitudinal linked administrative data on 14,704 children whose biological mothers encountered the CLS in early and middle childhood, we use linear probability model

Ambient Air Pollution, Housing Context, and Birth Outcomes Among Wisconsin Mothers.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the association between air pollution exposure and housing context during pregnancy and adverse birth outcomes. METHODS: We linked air pollution data from the Environmental Protection Agency and housing data from the American Community Survey with birth records from Wisconsin counties over a 9-year period. We calculated average daily pregnancy exposure to fine particulate matter and ozone and modeled its relationship to preterm birth, low birthweight and NICU admission, adjusting for individual characteristics and housing context. RESULTS: Ozone exposure and housing cos

Joinpoint Trend Analysis of Infant Mortality Disparities in Wisconsin, 1999-2016.

OBJECTIVES: To address shortcomings of previous research exploring trends in racial, educational, and race by educational disparities in infant mortality rates (IMRs) by using nonlinear methods to compare improvement within and between disparity domains. METHODS: We used joinpoint regression modeling to perform a cross-sectional analysis of IMR trends from linked birth and death certificates in Wisconsin between 1999 and 2016. RESULTS: In the race and education domains, IMR decreased by 1.9% per year for infants of White mothers and 1.1% per year for infants of less-educated mothers. Further

Late-Onset Asthma Predicts Cardiovascular Disease Events: The Wisconsin Sleep Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a heterogeneous syndrome with different clinical subtypes that is associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). We hypothesized that the late-onset subtype of asthma is associated with a higher risk of incident CVD. METHODS AND RESULTS: Participants from the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort free of CVD at baseline were followed for a mean (SD) of 13.9 (5.9) years for development of CVD (myocardial infarction, angina, stroke, coronary revascularization, heart failure, or CVD death). Late-onset asthma was defined as physician-diagnosed asthma at age ≥18 years.

Wisconsin Stillbirth Service Program: analysis of large for gestational age cases.

Since its inception in 1983, the Wisconsin Stillbirth Service Program (WiSSP) has reviewed over 2,600 referrals. Among 2,451 with fetal weight and gestational age recorded, 186 (7.6%) were large for gestational age (LGA), which is more than expected. We reviewed these cases to identify factors causing or contributing to fetal death as well as increased fetal size. LGA losses tended to occur later in pregnancy than non-LGA losses. The most common cause of death in LGA fetuses was fetal (43.5%), followed by placental (22.6%), and maternal (11.2%), which contrasts with previous studies involving

Newborn screening for severe combined immunodeficiency; the Wisconsin experience (2008-2011).

Severe combined immunodeficiency is a life-threatening primary immune deficiency characterized by low numbers of naïve T cells. Early diagnosis and treatment of this disease decreases mortality. In 2008, Wisconsin began newborn screening of infants for severe combined immunodeficiency and other forms of T-cell lymphopenia by the T-cell receptor excision circle assay. In total, 207,696 infants were screened. Seventy-two infants had an abnormal assay. T-cell numbers were normal in 38 infants, abnormal in 33 infants, and not performed in one infant, giving a positive predictive value for T-cell l

University of Wisconsin solution versus Celsior solution in clinical pancreas transplantation.

INTRODUCTION: This study compared the safety and efficacy of University of Wisconsin solution (UW) and Celsior solution (C) in pancreas transplantation (PTx). METHODS: A retrospective review of 154 PTx performed over a 61-month period included 77 grafts preserved with UW and 77 with C. The two groups were comparable for both donor and recipient characteristics. RESULTS: After a mean cold ischemia time of 624 minutes (range 360 to 945 minutes) for UW versus 672 minutes (range 415 to 1005 minutes) for C (P = NS), no primary endocrine nonfunction occurred. Delayed endocrine function was diagnos

Pregnancy-associated deaths and pregnancy-related deaths in Wisconsin, 1998-2001.

BACKGROUND: Although the risk of dying during childbirth or from complications afterward has been greatly reduced during the past 100 years, the current rate of approximately 1 death in 10,000 live births is still too high. The goal of the US Department of Health and Human Services is to reduce this rate by more than half by the year 2010. OBJECTIVE: To present Wisconsin data regarding pregnancy-associated deaths and pregnancy-related deaths. METHODS: Cases in which a woman had died during pregnancy or within 1 year of the end of her pregnancy were identified, and case-specific data were col

University of Wisconsin solution extends lung preservation after prostaglandin E1 infusion.

University of Wisconsin (UW) solution has been demonstrated to enhance and extend the preservation of the hepatic, pancreatic, renal, and cardiac allografts. Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1), which has been used to produce pulmonary vasodilatation, has improved preservation in lung transplantation. Experiments were designed to evaluate their potential role in 24-h preservation of the allografts in lung transplantation. Thirty-six dogs underwent left lung transplantation. The donor lungs (n = 6 in each group) were flushed with UW solution (group 1 and 2) or modified Euro-Collins (EC) solution (group 3)

Correlation between antisaccade and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test performance in schizophrenia.

In 27 patients with chronic schizophrenia, there was a significant correlation between performance on an antisaccade eye movement task and on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. A significant correlation was not obtained between antisaccade task performance and scores on the modified Mini-Mental State examination or the Schedule for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms in Schizophrenia. In addition, patients' antisaccade task performance was impaired compared with that of 12 normal subjects.

Genotype-Specific Detection of Measles Virus Using Wastewater Surveillance - Wisconsin, February 2026.

In February 2026, two travel-associated cases of measles were reported to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (WDHS). Public health investigations for each case included wastewater (sewage) surveillance for wild-type measles, which was first implemented by the WDHS Wastewater Monitoring Program in June 2025. The virus from one case, caused by measles genotype D8, was detected by a wastewater surveillance assay before the case was identified by local health authorities, leading to public health notifications and action. Measles virus from the second case, caused by measles genotype B3,

Hepatitis C in Wisconsin Jails: Barriers to Testing and Treatment During Incarceration.

BACKGROUND: Justice-involved individuals are disproportionately affected by hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Wisconsin's viral hepatitis elimination plan prioritizes this population, yet little is known about jail capacity for testing and treatment. METHODS: A 10-item survey was emailed to administrators of 71 county jails and 1 Tribal detention facility to assess HCV testing and treatment practices and barriers. Responses were analyzed descriptively. RESULTS: Thirty facilities (41.7%) responded. Ten jails (33.3%) offered HCV testing; 15 (51.7%) provided treatment. Common barriers to testi

Blastomycosis in solid organ transplant recipients-A retrospective series from southeastern Wisconsin.

Blastomycosis is a fungal infection caused primarily by Blastomyces dermatitis. The fungus is endemic to the Ohio, Mississippi, and St. Lawrence River areas of the United States. Organ transplant recipients are at risk of blastomycosis due to pharmacologic immunosuppression. Over a 20-year period, 30 cases of blastomycosis post-solid organ transplantation were identified at our center. The cumulative incidence of blastomycosis among SOT recipients was 0.99%. There was a male predominance (70% male) and a median age of 59 at the time of diagnosis. Regarding transplant type, 23 patients received

Wisconsin Twin Research: early development, childhood psychopathology, autism, and sensory over-responsivity.

The Wisconsin Twin Research Program comprises multiple longitudinal studies that utilize a panel recruited from statewide birth records for the years 1989 through 2004. Our research foci are the etiology and developmental course of early emotions, temperament, childhood anxiety and impulsivity, autism, sensory over-responsivity, and related topics. A signature feature of this research program is the breadth and depth of assessment during key periods of development. The assessments include extensive home- and laboratory-based behavioral batteries, recorded sibling and caregiver interactions, st
