Return to Work and Multilevel Versus Single-Level Cervical Fusion for Radiculopathy in a Workers' Compensation Setting.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective comparative cohort study. OBJECTIVE: Examine the impact of multilevel fusion on return to work (RTW) status and compare RTW status after multi- versus single-level cervical fusion for patients with work-related injury. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Patients with work-related injuries in the workers' compensation systems have less favorable surgical outcomes. Cervical fusion provides a greater than 90% likelihood of relieving radiculopathy and stabilizing or improving myelopathy. However, more levels fused at index surgery are reportedly associated with poorer surgic

Prognostic Variables for Patient Return-to-Work Interval Following Carpal Tunnel Release in a Workers' Compensation Population.

BACKGROUND: We hypothesize that depressive and anxiety disorders, chronic pain conditions, and work-related factors are significant determinants of the time interval for return to work (RTW) in the workers' compensation (WC) population following carpal tunnel release (CTR) surgery. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed records of all WC patients who underwent open CTR surgery over a 5-year period by 1 of 3 fellowship-trained hand surgeons. One hundred fifty-two wrists in 108 patients (64 unilateral, 44 bilateral) met the inclusion criteria. Demographic, medical, and surgical data were obtained

Catastrophizing as a cognitive vulnerability factor related to depression in workers' compensation patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain.

The purpose of this study was to examine the role of catastrophizing as a mediator and moderator between life stress and depression in a sample of workers' compensation patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Pain intensity, life stress (especially work and financial stress), and catastrophizing contributed significantly to depression. Catastrophizing was found to be partially mediating the relationship between life stress and depression and a moderator between social stress and depression. The results supported the role of catastrophizing as a cognitive vulnerability-stress factor related

A comparison of results of arthroscopic-assisted anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction between workers' compensation and noncompensation patients.

This investigation compared the results of arthroscopic-assisted anterior cruciate ligament patellar tendon autogenous reconstruction in patients who received Workers' Compensation (WC) benefits with results of similar surgery in patients who did not receive such benefits, to determine if differences existed based on this variable alone. Thirty-eight patients (19 WC benefits, 19 NoWC) were matched for age, injury chronicity, number of prior operations, and months of follow-up. All had the same operation and rehabilitation. A significant difference was found between the groups in the mean numbe

Two Semiconductor Companies' Financial Support Compensation (FSC) Programs for Semiconductor Workers with Suspected Work-Related Diseases (WRDs).

This study described two companies' financial compensation programs for semiconductor workers with suspected work-related diseases (WRDs) and discussed the major related issues. The key contents of the programs found on the websites opened by two semiconductor companies (Samsung and SK Hynix) were cited. In order to select the suspected WRDs for the FSC, all available epidemiologic studies related to health problems conducted in the semiconductor industry were reviewed. Most program contents are similar, although the amount of financial compensation and a few types of disease available for com

Increased overall and cause-specific mortality associated with disability among workers' compensation claimants with low back injuries.

BACKGROUND: Mortality tends to be higher among people who do not work than among workers, but the impact of work-related disability on mortality has not been well studied. METHODS: The vital status through 2015 was ascertained for 14 219 workers with an accepted workers' compensation claim in West Virginia for a low back injury in 1998 or 1999. Mortality among the cohort compared with the West Virginia general population was assessed using standard life table techniques. Associations of mortality and disability-related factors within the cohort were evaluated using Cox proportional hazards re

The Effect of Workers' Compensation Status on Outcomes of Cervical Disc Arthroplasty: A Prospective, Comparative, Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Receiving Workers' Compensation benefits has been associated with inferior outcomes after lumbar fusion. The purpose of our study was to compare the outcomes of cervical disc arthroplasty between patients receiving and those not receiving Workers' Compensation. METHODS: Patient-reported outcomes, reoperations, complications, and return-to-work status were analyzed at one year after surgery in an observational cohort of consecutive patients who underwent single-level or multilevel cervical disc arthroplasty for symptomatic cervical disc conditions, including radiculopathy or discog

Early predictors of chronic work disability associated with carpal tunnel syndrome: a longitudinal workers' compensation cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The study objectives were to identify early predictors of chronic work disability associated with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and to test the hypothesis that variables from each of several domains (sociodemographic, clinical, work-related, and psychosocial) would add unique predictive information. METHODS: Washington State workers were interviewed 18 days (median) after submitting a new workers' compensation claim for CTS. Baseline predictors of chronic work disability (> or =180 days of work disability compensation in the year after claim submission) were examined for workers wh

Alcohol consumption and incidence of workers' compensation claims: a 5-year prospective study of urban transit operators.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have linked alcohol impairment on the job to occupational injury. Few studies have looked at the association of nonwork drinking and occupational injury. METHODS: This study examines first workers' compensation claims after a baseline assessment of alcohol consumption and other occupational variables in 1836 transit operators participating in a medical examination for driver's license renewal. A proportional hazard model was used for the analysis. RESULTS: Individuals with higher alcohol consumption were more likely to be male, have more years of driving, and hav

Incidence of Traumatic Brain Injury by Severity Among Work-Related Injured Workers From 2010 to 2019: An Analysis of Workers' Compensation Insurance Data in Korea.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the status of work-related traumatic brain injury (wrTBI) in Korea between 2010 and 2019. METHODS: This study used Korea Workers' Compensation Insurance data, and the sample comprised workers who claimed compensation for wrTBI from 2010 to 2019. The annual incidence of wrTBI was calculated as the rate per 100,000 workers. Time trends over the 10-year period were assessed using Poisson regression. RESULTS: The mean incidence of wrTBI was 28.4/100,000. Regarding the incidence rate of wrTBI by severity, mild TBI and moderate-to-severe TBI were 12.9/100

Patterns of physiotherapy attendance in compensated Australian workers with low back pain: a retrospective cohort study.

Workers with low back pain (LBP) frequently seek care from physiotherapists. We sought to identify patterns of physiotherapy attendance and factors associated with these patterns in Australian workers with accepted compensation claims for LBP. We included workers with accepted workers' compensation claims for LBP from 4 Australian states between 2011 and 2015. We used trajectory modelling to identify distinct groups of workers based on the number (ie, volume) of monthly physiotherapy attendances over a 2-year period from claim acceptance. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression models w

Worker's Compensation Status and Outcomes Following Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion: Prospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Anterior lumbar-interbody fusion (ALIF) is a commonly performed procedure for degenerative spinal disorders with reasonable clinical and safety outcomes, although there is limited evidence regarding the impact of ALIF in patients receiving worker's compensation (WC) compared with those without. The aim of our study is to identify whether WC status affects the clinical outcome and rates of complication following ALIF surgery in a prospective cohort. METHODS: We followed prospectively 114 consecutive patients undergoing ALIF surgery from 2012-2014. Patients were categorized into 2 g

A medicolegal analysis of worker appeals for fibromyalgia as a compensable condition following workplace soft-tissue injury.

OBJECTIVE: Workplace injuries may be implicated in the causation of fibromyalgia (FM), hence linking FM to compensation. We examined the appeals by workers directed to an appeals tribunal for causation of FM following soft-tissue injury sustained in the workplace. METHODS: One hundred fifty tribunal decisions relevant to FM were examined using a predetermined protocol. New-onset FM was appealed in 123, and aggravation of preexisting FM in 15. RESULTS: All injuries were of a soft-tissue type, without persistent physical findings to explain continued symptoms. The tribunal accepted 67% of appe
