The applicability of the inhalable convention for sampling aerosols relies on its being a valid model for typical sampling environments. The current convention is based on measurements carried out in external wind speeds between 1 and 4 m.s-1. However these measurements show a degree of wind speed dependence, and it is uncertain at present how valid the convention is for describing human aspiration efficiency outside these wind speed limits. Following concerns that wind speeds in many indoor workplaces may be significantly below this range, measurements have been made in 55 work areas covering

This paper reviews the range of health surveillance activities which can be utilized in the workplace by occupational health professionals for assessing fitness for work and contributing to the prevention of occupational illness and promotion of good health. The systematic approach described categorizes health surveillance procedures into occupational or non-occupational, risk-based or unfocused, and as primary, secondary or tertiary preventive measures. All categories of health surveillance are currently being practised to some extent, but the type of surveillance may not match the needs of t

This study examined the use of breast cancer screening education programs in 102 of the major workplaces in Forsyth County, North Carolina. Characteristics of workplaces that had sponsored such programs within the preceding three years were identified. Eighteen percent of the workplaces surveyed had offered breast cancer screening education programs. Factors that were directly related to having sponsored a program included the size of the workforce, the number of female employees, and the proportion of female employees over 40 years old. Characteristics related to health service activities in

1. Ergonomic hazards impact employers and workers and their families. Poor workplace design, awkward body mechanics or postures, repetitive movements, and other ergonomic hazards induce or contribute to a staggering number of cumulative trauma disorders. 2. Cumulative trauma disorders (CTD) affect hands, wrists, elbows, arms, shoulders, the lower back, and the cervical spine area. Structures involved include tendons, muscles, bones, nerves, and blood vessels. One can plan strategies for abatement by learning to recognize the hazards that contribute to CTD. 3. OSHA has published the Ergonomic P

We undertook a study to confirm the existence of an apparent cluster of Bell's palsy in an industrial plant ("W4"), and to test etiologic hypotheses regarding chemical exposures, immune suppression, and infectious etiologies. Cases were enumerated by questionnaire. Employees with a history of Bell's palsy ("cases") were invited to participate in a study that included medical history, T cell studies, viral and Lyme disease serologies, and blink reflex studies. Thirty-three unaffected volunteers from W4 and 32 from a comparison building were also tested. Extensive environmental studies were carr

Growing interest has been expressed by the business community concerning intervention against smoking in the workplace. As most adult smokers are unlikely to have access to smokers' clinics or other treatment facilities outside the workplace, the workplace itself could be an ideal location for the provision of treatment programs. If the interest of the business community can be translated into action, large populations of smokers would become accessible to workplace treatment programs. Despite this possibility, the potential of the workplace for smoking intervention remains largely unexplored.

Because people's primary commitments lie elsewhere, the workplace will never be a true community. The workplace will be better, however, if employees show concern and respect for coworkers and if employers celebrate traditions, recognize achievement, and encourage creative thinking. Such workplace enhancement should encourage employees' participation in a shared enterprise but not substitute for workers' outside ties. To offset excessive competition, which can lead to suspicion and hostility, employers can (1) provide communication outlets, (2) faster loyalty to the job by providing attractive

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Any harmful act Physical, sexual, or psychological committed against the nurses in the workplace by a patient or visitor is called workplace violence (WPV) against nurses. WPV is directly related to decreasing job satisfaction, burnout, humiliation, guilt, emotional stress, intention to quit a job, and increased staff turnover. The purpose of this narrative review is to explore the concept of WPV, its prevalence, consequences, influence on nursing, and strategies developed to prevent such incidences. WPV is not acceptable and, regardless of the culprit's physical or psychol

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization and the World Economic Forum have recommended further research to strengthen current knowledge of workplace health programmes, particularly on effectiveness and using simple instruments. A pedometer is one such simple instrument that can be incorporated in workplace interventions.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of pedometer interventions in the workplace for increasing physical activity and improving subsequent health outcomes.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing and the disclosure of HIV-related information pose questions of privacy and public policy that are of concern in both public- and private-sector workplaces. Public-sector employees have constitutional protection from discrimination on the basis of their HIV-positive status. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is an important source of protection for private-sector employees. There are also other federal laws that provide protection from discrimination. However, the scope of these laws is unclear. Similarly, while some state legislatures have att

BACKGROUND: Few health care organizations have structured approaches to assimilate and analyze disruptive behavior data. In 2012, Veterans Affairs (VA) developed the Workplace Behavior Risk Assessment (WBRA), a tool that collects behavioral threat data from multiple systems, consolidates it, and tailors staff training based on the frequency and type of events.
OBJECTIVE: This paper provides an overview of the WBRA and how it can inform nurse training.
METHODS: A repeated measures design evaluated trends in workplace violence reporting and event rates across 140 VA health care systems from 20

OBJECTIVE: To develop and assess the psychometric properties of a nursing workplace violence experience (WPV-E) scale on burnout, engagement, intent to leave, job satisfaction, and work pressure.
BACKGROUND: Workplace violence (WPV) is a significant and increasing threat to nurses. These incidents have a substantial negative impact on nurses' well-being and patient care. There is a need for a concise and reliable instrument to more comprehensively assess WPV-E in nurses.
METHODS: Researchers used a 4-phase approach, including item generation, interrater reliability testing, data reduction, a

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco is the leading modifiable risk factor for cancer and other chronic diseases. The workplace provides an opportunity to advance tobacco cessation efforts. Combining tobacco cessation with complementary components addressing mental health, physical activity, and healthy eating has demonstrated effectiveness in non-workplace settings. This scoping review examines the literature on multicomponent workplace tobacco cessation interventions to identify core components and implementation facilitators and barriers to support uptake in the workplace setting.
METHODS: A scoping revi

IMPORTANCE: Workplace violence (WPV) against health care workers (HCWs) is common and likely underreported. Reliable data on the incidence of WPV and its impact on victims are lacking.
OBJECTIVE: To prospectively define the frequency of WPV against HCWs in the emergency department (ED), examine whether HCW demographics are associated with increased risk, and explore the impact of these events on HCWs.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study was conducted over 2 months in 2023 (August 28 to October 22, 2023) in the ED of a large, urban, academic safety net hospital in th

BACKGROUND: Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is one of the most prevalent developmental disorders and affects expressive and receptive language with no clear cause (Bishop et al., 2017). Awareness of DLD is currently much lower than other (sometimes less prevalent) disorders such as Autism or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) (Bishop, 2010). Despite this, it has now been established that the implications of DLD reach well into adulthood (Botting, 2020; Botting et al., 2016; Clegg et al., 2005; Johnson et al., 2010). Thus, DLD may affect not only school progress but also empl

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence among nurses is prevalent worldwide. If nurses become aware of the workplace violence and its risk factors then only they can protect themselves. This study assessed the prevalence of workplace violence and its associated factors among nurses in Pokhara, Nepal.
METHODS: A hospital-based descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in Pokhara. The required sample size of the study was 200 nurses. We adopted self-administered questionnaire developed by International Labor Office, International Council of Nurses, World Health Organization (WHO), and Public Servi

OBJECTIVE: To identify organizational factors contributing to workplace violence in hospitals.
METHODS: A questionnaire survey was conducted in 2013 among employees in a Midwestern hospital system (n = 446 respondents). Questions concerned employees' experiences of violence at work in the previous year and perceptions of the organizational safety climate. Logistic regressions examined staff interaction and safety climate factors associated with verbal and physical violence, respectively.
RESULTS: Interpersonal conflict was a risk factor for verbal violence (OR 1.49, 95% CI 1.04 to 2.12, P <
