Biofilm Dispersal and Wound Infection Clearance With Preclinical Debridement Agents.

Biofilms complicate wound care by causing recurrent infections that are often resistant to debridement and are highly antibiotic-tolerant. We investigated whether the addition of a biofilm dispersal agent could improve the efficacy of debridement. The previous studies have indicated that a glycoside hydrolase cocktail of alpha-amylase and cellulase can act as a potent biofilm dispersal agent. With in vitro and ex vivo Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm models, we compared glycoside hydrolases against other, clinically relevant, enzymatic debridement agents (papain, bromelain, and collagenase). A Case Report of Wound Infection Caused by Mycobacterium porcinum.

BACKGROUND: Mycobacterium porcinum is a rapidly growing non-tuberculous mycobacterium that requires 3 to 5 days of cultivation for colonies to become visible to the naked eye, with most exhibiting vigorous growth during this initial week. It does not readily grow in standard bacterial culture conditions, posing challenges that often result in missed or incorrect diagnoses, and necessitating an extended course of anti-infective treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a rare instance of wound infection caused by Mycobacterium porcinum in a 64-year-old female patient who underwe

Design of Ultrasound-Driven Charge Interference Therapy for Wound Infection.

Wound infections, especially those caused by pathogenic bacteria, present a considerable public health concern due to associated complications and poor therapeutic outcomes. Herein, we developed antibacterial nanoparticles, namely, PGTP, by coordinating guanidine derivatives with a porphyrin-based sonosensitizer. The synthesized PGTP nanoparticles, characterized by their strong positive charge, effectively disrupted the bacterial biosynthesis process through charge interference, demonstrating efficacy against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Additionally, PGTP nanoparticles gener

Omadacycline for a Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacter cloacae-Associated Wound Infection.

Introduction: Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) are problematic pathogens because infections caused by these organisms are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. These organisms often harbor multiple resistance mechanisms, which makes it difficult to treat their associated infections. Treatment typically consists of intravenous antibiotics that are selected based on the specific susceptibility pattern for the pathogen. Data on the use of oral antibiotics for the treatment of infections caused by CRE are sparse. Case Presentation: In this case, a 62-year-old female pre

[A human bite wound caused a severe life threatening infection].

Within 24 hours after a human bite trauma, a 34-year-old male patient became septic and ended up at an intensive care unit. The combination of a local damage of the skin or mucosa, aggressive micro-organisms, local host factors, and some bad luck resulted in necrotizing fasciitis for this patient. This is a very rapid progressive infection which can spread via fat tissue and the muscle fascia. The occurrence of extensive necrosis releases a lot of cytokines and acute-phase proteins, resulting in a systemic reaction. The consequential vasodilatation makes it necessary for the heart to pump hard

RISK FACTORS FOR SURGICAL WOUND INFECTION AFTER ELECTIVE LAPAROSCOPIC CHOLECYSTECTOMY.

AIM: One of the ways to avoid infection after surgical procedures is through antibiotic prophylaxis. This occurs in cholecystectomies with certain risk factors for infection. However, some guidelines suggest the use of antibiotic prophylaxis for all cholecystectomies, although current evidence does not indicate any advantage of this practice in the absence of risk factors. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of wound infection after elective laparoscopic cholecystectomies and the use of antibiotic prophylaxis in these procedures. METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 439 patients w

A rare skin condition masquerading as a serious wound infection.

Pyoderma gangrenosum is a rare, serious and commonly missed condition that can effect post-operative surgical patients. The condition is commonly misdiagnosed as a wound infection, with subsequent inappropriate antibiotic therapy and wound debridement. We present the case of a 46-year-old patient who suffered this delayed diagnosis and multiple unnecessary interventions. We present this in an effort to raise awareness of the rare but serious condition, pyoderma gangrenosum.

Bacteroides pyogenes causing serious human wound infection from animal bites.

Bacteroides pyogenes is part of the normal oral flora of domestic animals. There is one previous report of human infection, with B. pyogenes bacteremia following a cat bite (Madsen 2011). We report seven severe human infections where B. pyogenes was identified by Bruker matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDTI-TOF MS), but not by VITEK MS and was misidentified by VITEK ANC card.

Antibacterial [corrected] coating of abdominal closure sutures and wound infection.

BACKGROUND: Poor wound healing and the development of infection in incisional wounds continue to be among the most common complications of open abdominal surgery. Various bacteria may contaminate not only the tissue in the operative wound, but also the actual suture material. To prevent the contamination of suture material in surgical wounds, triclosan-coated polyglactin 910 suture materials with antibacterial activity (Vicryl plus) was developed. The aim of this study was to ascertain if the use of Vicryl plus reduced the number of wound infections after midline laparotomy comparing to polydi

Management of human and animal bite wound infection: an overview.

Animal and human bite wounds can lead to serious infections. The organisms recovered generally originate from the biter's oral cavity and the victim's skin flora. Anaerobes were isolated from more than two thirds of human and animal bite infections. Streptococcus pyogenes is often recovered in human bites, Pasteurella multocida in animal bites, Eikenella corrodens in animal and human, Capnocytophaga spp, Neisseria weaveri, Weeksella zoohelcum, Neisseria canis, Staphylococcus intermedius, nonoxidizer-1, and eugonic oxidizer-2 in dog, Flavobacterium group in pig, and Actinobacillus spp in horse

Infection following soft tissue injury: its role in wound healing.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Wound infection has always been an unconquered problem temporarily improved with the discovery of antibiotics but now struggling with an epidemic of resistant organisms. Wound healing has become a popular sub-speciality for the doctor and allied health professional working in the laboratory or at the bedside. It is a field with many new journals and frequent congresses that publish elaborate proceedings. These have been examined for this review. RECENT FINDINGS: Measurement of infection remains elusive. A clear difference between contamination and infection is difficult to

Urinary catheterisation and deep wound infection after hip fracture surgery.

We have studied the incidence of deep wound infection after hip fracture surgery and its relationship to urinary catheterisation. Infection after hemiarthroplasty occurred in 16/949 cases and 10/1,143 sliding hip screw fixations. No cases of deep sepsis were seen for the 203 patients treated with an intramedullary nail or the 816 patients treated with parallel screws. The use of urinary catheterisation was compared with a control group of patients. In the sepsis group, 12/18 patients had been catheterised peri-operatively or within 24 h, as opposed to 18/36 patients in the control group; the d

Preparing the wound bed 2003: focus on infection and inflammation.

Wound bed preparation is the promotion of wound closure through diagnosis of the cause, attention to patient-centered concerns, and correction of systemic and local factors that may delay healing. To enhance the evidence base that may be lacking, a review of relevant literature was conducted and combined with input from the International Wound Bed Preparation Advisory Board and the Canadian Chronic Wound Advisory Board to create an updated examination of practices. A template based on expert opinion of the clinical actions corresponding to each step in the paradigm of preparing the wound bed i
