OBJECTIVES: Rapidly growing nontuberculous mycobacteria (RGNTM) have yet to be described in combat-related injuries. This study investigates the epidemiology, clinical findings, treatment, and outcomes of RGNTM infections among combat casualties wounded in Afghanistan from 2010 to 2012.
METHODS: Patients with RGNTM were identified from the Department of Defense Trauma Registry through the Trauma Infectious Disease Outcomes Study. Trauma history, surgical management, and clinical data were collected. Six isolates from patients requiring antimycobacterial therapy were sequenced.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of combat trauma can have long and challenging recoveries, which may be complicated by infection. Invasive fungal infections are a rare but serious complication with limited treatment options. Currently, aggressive surgical debridement is the standard of care, with antifungal agents used adjunctively with uncertain efficacy. UNLABELLED: We describe a method of wound closure with a conjunctival flap in cases of wound burn. A fornix-based conjunctival flap is raised to adequately cover the wound. Then, a single horizontal mattress suture with 10-0 monofilament nylon is passed to appose the wound. PURPOSE: Gunshot wounds to the scrotum and testis are rare. Blast injury from gunshot wounds can result in blast defects that are difficult to close. We reviewed our experience with reconstruction of the testis tunica albuginea to determine the efficacy of graft reconstruction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the chart and trauma database from 1992 to 2002 and identified 17 patients with gunshot wounds to the testis. In 6 patients the injured testes were nonviable and orchiectomy was performed. Nine of the remaining 11 injured testes were reconstructed with free grafts.

A 43-year-old man was treated for a traumatic degloving injury to his foot with a transmetatarsal amputation and wound care because of the extensive soft tissue loss. After biweekly sharp debridements in the office for 4 weeks, very minimal skin ingrowth was noted. Maggot therapy was then implemented for a 48-hour treatment and a second treatment for 72 hours to help reduce excessive fibrosis and to painlessly debride the tissues to expose the granular base. PURPOSE: To report a case of explosive trauma to a patient with a history of radial keratotomy (RK), which resulted in multiple wound dehiscences but not globe rupture.

AGP is a serum protein, whose level rises after injury; hence the term "acute phase reactant." Presented are two cases of stab wounds through the gluteus in which serious damage was incurred by internal organs: in one case there was penetration of the rectum with the appearance of signs of acute abdomen; in the other there was tearing of retroperitoneal muscles and the internal iliac vessels with resultant hypovolemic shock. These observations suggest that there should be greater awareness of the life-threatening nature of stab wounds of the gluteus under similar circumstances.
