Intracarpal canal interstitial fluid pressures were determined in the wrists of 22 patients with 23 Colles' fractures. Mean values were 18 mm Hg in neutral wrist position, 27 mm Hg in 20 degrees flexion, 47 mm Hg in 40 degrees flexion, and 35 mm Hg in 20 degrees extension. Ten of 23 wrists (45%) had pressures greater than 40 mm Hg in 40 degrees of flexion. Because of the high incidence of median neuropathy associated with immobilization of wrist fractures in a position of marked flexion, an awareness of the magnitude of increased interstitial fluid pressure should lead to alternative methods o

PURPOSE: Lateral tilt (radially inclined) radiographs are useful after volar locked plate fixation of distal radius fractures to assess the radiocarpal joint, subchondral bone congruity, and volar tilt. The purpose of our study was to define the reliability of our positioning method using the patient's opposite hand to position the injured wrist to obtain an inclined lateral radiograph with good visualization of the subchondral bone.
METHODS: A retrospective review identified adult patients who had a unilateral distal radius fracture treated with a volar locked plate and who had an initial po

Wrist fractures are common in postmenopausal women and are associated with functional decline. Fracture patterns after wrist fracture are unclear. The goal of this study was to determine the frequency and types of fractures that occur after a wrist fracture among postmenopausal women. We carried out a post hoc analysis of data from the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study and Clinical Trials (1993-2010) carried out at 40 US clinical centers. Participants were postmenopausal women aged 50 to 79 years at baseline. Mean follow-up duration was 11.8 years. Main measures included incident w

Introduction Treatment of scaphoid fracture is challenging due to its unique blood supply and geometry. Traditionally, a headless compression screw is the standard treatment for unstable scaphoid fracture. Some fractures are complex, for example, comminution with bone loss. A scaphoid plate is an option in these difficult fractures providing adequate rotational stability. Aim To share our experience in using scaphoid plates in complex wrist trauma and comminuted fractures. Method and material Complex wrist trauma involving scaphoid fractures that were comminuted and multi-fragmentary fractures

INTRODUCTION: Facial and mandibular aggression with gunshot wound (GSW) is highly complex and represents a challenge for the assistant surgical team because in addition to the inherent lethal potential, they have the capacity for destruction and mutilation caused by the high kinetic energy conferred to the firearm projectile. Among these lesions, comminutive mandibular fractures are difficult to treat because the anatomical planes are distorted, soft tissues are in severe disarrangement, and bone fragments are without periosteum, which, if opted for an open treatment, with internal fixation, f

Wrist and scaphoid fractures are common injuries seen and treated in everyday orthopaedic practice. The purpose of the study was to assess the trends and reasons for litigation related to wrist and scaphoid fractures within the NHS. Under a freedom of information (FOI) request, data from 1995 to 2012 were provided by the National Health Service Litigation Authority (NHSLA) on all litigation claims made as a result of wrist and scaphoid fractures. A total of 1354 claims relating to the hand and wrist were identified. Wrist and scaphoid fractures accounted for 492 (36.3%) of these claims, and 36

A prospective multicenter clinical study evaluated, using the Hand20 and hand diagram, the disability, incidence, location, and predictive factors of residual wrist pain 18 months after volar locking plate fixation of distal radius fracture in 122 patients. The average Hand20 score and numeric rating scores for pain were 13.1 +/- 18.2 and 2.1 +/- 23, respectively. Fifty-seven patients indicated that they had pain. Among those patients, 25 had ulnar pain and 45 had radial pain. The incidence of radial-sided wrist pain was higher than ulnar-sided wrist pain. Logistic regression analysis showed t

BACKGROUND: For comminuted Rolando's fracture, external fixation with early mobilization is the treatment of choice however, there is controversy in this treatment. Low-profile or mini external fixator can be used, but expense and availability of this kind of implant in Thailand has resulted in using various techniques of surgery. The purpose of this retrospective study was to present the authors' alternative technique with modified implants and the outcome in the management of comminuted Rolando's fracture.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: The patients with comminuted Rolando's fracture were treated by

Postmenopausal fractures are associated with low bone mass; however, the role of low peak bone mass in young adults in determining subsequent osteoporosis suggests that premenopausal fractures may also be relevant. We therefore sought to determine whether a self-reported previous history of premenopausal wrist and nonwrist fractures could also be associated with bone density and therefore be used to predict osteoporosis. We recruited 453 volunteer women with a median age of 64 years (range 50-83 years), with no metabolic bone disease, previous femoral neck fracture, or prevalent vertebral frac

Over a period of 5 years, 65 children under 12 years of age were diagnosed as having "wrist sprain" at the American University of Beirut Medical Center, Emergency Department. Thirty-eight children were reevaluated; 33 patients (86.8%) were diagnosed as having a Salter-Harris I fracture of the distal radius that necessitated further treatment to relieve symptoms and allow early wrist function. The diagnosis of "wrist sprain" is often inadequate in establishing a proper treatment regimen. Rather, by taking a careful history, performing an exacting examination, and utilizing appropriate diagnosti

We conducted a biomechanical study of changes in parameters of wrist motor tendons in fractures of the distal radius in 7 cadaveric extremities. Extra-articular distal radius fractures were simulated by distal radius osteotomy and fracture angulation was maintained by external fixators. Eight positions of the distal radius fractures were studied: dorsal angulation of 10 degrees, 20 degrees, 30 degrees, and 40 degrees and radial angulation of 5 degrees, 10 degrees, 15 degrees, and 20 degrees. Dorsal and radial angulation of the fractures were measured with respect to the shaft of the radius. Ex

Twenty-eight patients with 31 fractures of the distal radius were treated by closed external fixation. The complication rate for this series was 50%. Anatomic results were acceptable but hand function at final review was disappointing, particularly in the measurement of grip strength and the patient's ability to perform the activities of daily living. There was a highly significant correlation between complications and poor functional outcome. Although external fixation can achieve restoration of normal anatomy, functional outcome may be poor because of the severity of the associated soft tiss

A combination of forces makes the scaphoid bone susceptible to fracture. The common mechanism of trauma is a force applied to the palmar aspect of the wrist while it is in extreme dorsiflexion. Because early fracture diagnosis by x-ray study is difficult, all patients with a suspicious wrist injury and tenderness in the scaphoid region should be treated as if they have a fracture until radiographs at two and four weeks are normal. Treatment usually consists of immobilization using a long or short plaster arm cast. Various treatment methods, including electrical stimulation, are used when nonun

PURPOSE: This study aims to determine the impact of injury mechanism energy level on clinical outcomes following Galeazzi fracture.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on 116 skeletally mature patients treated operatively for Galeazzi fractures between January 2000 and October 2023. Patients were categorized by mechanism of injury into high-energy (HE, n = 92) and low-energy (LE, n = 24) groups. Demographics, fracture characteristics, fixation details, and postoperative outcomes, including wrist and elbow range of motion, complications, radiographic healing time, and reoperations, w

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the distal radius have been traditionally classified based on the suspected mechanism of injury. Among clinicians, the terms "Colles" and "Smith" fractures are commonly used to refer to a distal radius fracture that is either displaced to the dorsal (Colles) or palmar (Smith) side of the radius. When analysing x-rays, it is not uncommon for a Smith fracture to be detected in cases where patients describe a fall on the wrist in an extended position. Thus, the question arises how a flexion-type fracture can occur after an extension injury. So far, only little research ha

BACKGROUND: The association between diuretics and falls in older adult has been reported in previous studies, but discrepancy remains between the different types of diuretics. The association of diuretics with the risk of wrist fractures due to diuretics is also unclear. Therefore, in this study, we determined the association of diuretics with falls and wrist fractures by Mendelian randomization.
METHODS: We used a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach to evaluate the effects of the loop diuretics\potassium-sparing diuretics\thiazide diuretics (LDs\PSDs\TDs) on the risk of falls an

The aim of the study was to evaluate the results of Dorsal Wrist Plating in intra-articular distal radius fractures with a dorsal displacement. In this prospective study, a single surgeon treated 20 patients with a (partially) intra-articular distal radius fracture with a dorsal rim avulsion or a dorsal Barton's type fragment. They all underwent an open reduction and internal fixation by Dorsal Wrist Plating. A total of 17 patients had a follow-up period of at least 12 months (mean follow- up of 17 months) and these patients were included in the study. Both functional and radiological outcome
