Subluxation of the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) is associated with extensor tendon rupture in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, it remains difficult to quantitatively evaluate DRUJ subluxation in RA wrist. We devised a new method for assessing DRUJ subluxation. This study investigated whether the new method, known as the RA subluxation ratio (RASR), or a conventional method was superior for detecting extensor tendon rupture in the RA wrist. Thirty-five RA wrists and 10 wrists of healthy volunteers were scanned using computed tomography. The RA wrists were divided into a tendo

Between January 1989 and October 1991, 56 patients with 57 distal radius fractures were treated with the new Orthofix wrist fixator. This review of 43 patients consists of cases with follow-ups of at least 12 months. One patient had died, and 38 (90.5%) of the remaining 42 fractures were examined 20.3 months after surgery, on average. Radiological findings were classified according to Lidström, and the functional results according to Gartland and Werley in the Sarmiento modification. Functional analysis demonstrated excellent and good results in 73% of the fractures. Although the number of cas

Following fractures of the distal radius, a relatively high incidence of complications is caused by malalignment in the distal radio-ulnar (DRU) joint; recent anatomic and clinical investigations have shown congruity of that joint to be of significant importance for restoring the function of the wrist. The radius forms a moderately arched bone, which moves around the ulna in pronation and supination. Biomechanically, the ulna may be regarded as the pillar around which the radius moves. In an anatomic investigation of 5 arm specimens, we have shown that the maximum cartilage contact in the DRU

We report on a patient who developed septic wrist arthritis with destruction of the entire carpus due to osteomyelitis following percutaneous pinning of a fifth metacarpal base fracture. Arthrodesis was performed using a 6 cm vascularized iliac bone graft. This case report may sharpen the surgeon's awareness of risks in orthopedic surgeries, even though the procedure seems to be rather simple and the patient is young and seems to be healthy.

Five completely amputated hands at the level of the wrist joint were replanted. The five patients were all men, ranging from 19 to 31 years and the amputations were all the result of knife injuries. All the revascularizations were successful. Secondary tenolysis was required in one case. Postoperative functional results compared to the uninjured hand were evaluated according to five main criteria: (1) the patient's overall satisfaction with the hand; (2) recovery of flexor and extensor function of the thumb and fingers; (3) recovery of thumb opposition; (4) recovery of sensitivity in the media

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.
INTRODUCTION: The active wrist joint position sense (JPS) test has been determined to be a clinically useful test for assessing wrist sensorimotor (SM) status after distal radius fracture (DRF). Its responsiveness is yet to be determined.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Primary study aim was to determine the active wrist JPS test responsiveness to detect change in wrist SM status at 8 and 12 weeks after DRF treatment intervention. Secondary aims were to compare group (nonsurgical, surgical, high, and low pain) test responsiveness; compare pain-level group partic

This study evaluated dynamically the morphology of the carpal tunnel during the wrist motion. The object was to determine the transverse dimension (TD), anteroposterior (AP) dimension and cross-sectional area (CA) of the carpal tunnel in the neutral, flexed and extended positions. The wrists of eight male and eight female volunteers aged 20 to 38 years were studied. With wrist extension, AP and CA decreased while the TD increased at the pisiform level, and CA increased at the hamate level. With flexion, TD and CA decreased at the pisiform level and CA decreased at the hamate level. The results

The development of advanced control strategies for prosthetic hands is essential for improving performance and user experience. Soft prosthetic wrists pose substantial control challenges due to their compliant structures and nonlinear dynamics. This work presents a learning-based impedance control strategy for a tendon-driven soft continuum wrist, integrated with the PRISMA HAND II prosthesis, aimed at achieving stable and adaptive joint-space control. The proposed method combines physics-based modeling using Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and the Euler-Lagrange approach with a neural network tra

Understanding the mechanism underlying the evolution of knuckle-walking in African great apes but not in humans may provide important implications about the origin and evolution of human bipedal locomotion. In this study, aiming to reveal possible structural adaptations of the chimpanzee's forearm and hand musculature related to knuckle-walking, we measure the passive elastic moment of the chimpanzee's and orangutan's wrist as it was rotated into extension, immobilizing the metacarpophalangeal joint at three different positions: extended (as in knuckle-walking), flexed (as in fist-walking), an

OBJECTIVE: Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) is increasingly being used in the evaluation of pediatric musculoskeletal diseases. In order to provide objective assessments of arthritis, reliable MSUS scoring systems are needed. Recently, joint-specific scoring systems for arthritis of the pediatric elbow, wrist, and finger joints were proposed by the Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance (CARRA) MSUS workgroup. This study aimed to assess the reliability of these scoring systems when used by sonographers with different levels of expertise.
METHODS: Members of the CARRA MSUS wor

Volar perilunate fracture dislocation is an extremely rare carpal injury, but associated with metacarpophalangeal joint dislocation of both the ipsilateral index and middle finger has never been reported. We report one case of a 28-year-old man following a high-energy trauma. After performing closed reduction of the metacarpophalangeal joint injury, open reduction of the wrist injury through volar approach was done, and a K-wire fixation was used to stabilize the scaphoid fracture and lunotriquetral joint. After a 16 months?follow-up period, the wrist regained a full range of motion without sy

Twelve patients with dynamically treated ruptures of finger flexor tendons the median nerve was electroneurologically examined at an average of 16 months after operation. The parameters were abnormal in about one third to three quarters of the patients. In accordance with literature the reason for this is seen in pronounced flexion position of the wrist during treatment according to Kleinert.

Incidence of arthrosis in the region of the hand-joint and carpal bones has proved to be substantially higher than generally assumed. This was established by X-ray analysis in more than 80 per cent of all cases investigated. The changes thus recorded were found to be related to sex and age. Studies were conducted into the relationship between arthrosis and previous trauma.

Background: Wrist immobilization is a common clinical intervention for wrist injuries; however, its repercussions on gait parameters and plantar support have not been extensively investigated. Objectives: The purpose of the study was to determine whether wrist immobilization causes alterations in foot pressure and center of gravity, considering hand dominance and visual conditions (eyes open or closed). Methods: The research experiment was conducted using the PodoPrint S4 platform. Basic descriptive statistics were calculated to summarize the variables. Additionally, in the mixed linear model

Continuous kinematic biofeedback during exercise interventions can lead to improved therapeutic outcomes in hand and wrist rehabilitation. Conventional methods for measuring joint kinematics typically allow only static measurements performed by specially trained therapists. This paper introduces skin-conformal, wearable wireless systems designed to continuously and accurately capture the angles of target joints, specifically in hand and wrist. Supported by a computer vision-based calibration protocol run on a smart device, these magnetometer-based standalone systems provide patients and clinic
