Identification of Brucella abortus genes in elk (Cervus elaphus) using in vivo-induced antigen technology (IVIAT) reveals novel markers of infection.

Elk in the Greater Yellowstone Area are a major reservoir for brucellosis, which represents an obstacle to eradication of the disease in domestic livestock. Furthermore, immune responses to Brucella abortus infection in the wild host are not well-understood. In this regard, in vivo-induced antigen technology (IVIAT) was employed to identify novel B. abortus antigens expressed during infection in elk. Sera collected from sero-positive Wyoming elk were pooled and absorbed against in vitro-grown cultures of B. abortus. Approximately 35,000 E. coli clones, expressing B. abortus DNA, were then scre

Heterozygote Advantage in a Finite Population: Black Color in Wolves.

There is a striking color polymorphism for wolves in the Yellowstone National Park where approximately half the wolves are black. The genetic basis for this polymorphism is known, and fitnesses of the genotypes are estimated. These estimates suggest that there is strong heterozygote advantage but substantial asymmetry in the fitness differences of the 2 homozygotes. Theoretically, such fitnesses in a finite population are thought to reduce genetic variation at least as fast as if there were no selection at all. Because the color polymorphism has remained at about the same frequency for 17 year

Thermoregulation in pronghorn antelope (Antilocapra americana Ord) in the summer.

We have used thermistor/data logger assemblies to measure temperatures in the brain, carotid artery, jugular vein and abdominal cavity, and subcutaneously, in five pronghorn antelope over a summer in Wyoming. Globe and air temperature varied by up to approximately 50 degrees C daily during the summer and maximum solar radiation was approximately 900 W m(-2). Brain temperature (38.9+/-0.3 degrees C) was consistently approximately 0.2-0.5 degrees C higher than carotid blood temperature (38.6+/-0.3 degrees C), which was the same as abdominal temperature (38.8+/-0.4 degrees C). Jugular blood tempe

Chlamydial-caused infectious keratoconjunctivitis in bighorn sheep of Yellowstone National Park.

An epizootic of infectious keratoconjunctivitis occurred in bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) in Yellowstone National Park during the winter of 1981-82. The causative organism was identified as Chlamydia sp. Mortality related to the epizootic was approximately 60% of an estimated 500 bighorn sheep in the northern range population. The infection probably affected all sex and age classes, but field surveys of live animals and mortality suggested that mature rams died disproportionately. Limited field observations the following winter on individuals having both normal and cloudy-appearing eyes sugg

Selecting pharmacies for COVID-19 testing to ensure access.

Rapid diagnostic testing for COVID-19 is key to guiding social distancing orders and containing emerging disease clusters by contact tracing and isolation. However, communities throughout the US do not yet have adequate access to tests. Pharmacies are already engaged in testing, but there is capacity to greatly increase coverage. Using a facility location optimization model and willingness-to-travel estimates from US National Household Travel Survey data, we find that if COVID-19 testing became available in all US pharmacies, an estimated 94% of the US population would be willing to travel to

DETECTION OF DEER ATADENOVIRUS A DNA IN DAM AND OFFSPRING PAIRS OF ROCKY MOUNTAIN MULE DEER (ODOCOILEUS HEMIONUS HEMIONUS) AND ROCKY MOUNTAIN ELK (CERVUS CANADENSIS NELSONI).

Adenovirus hemorrhagic disease affects primarily mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus canadensis nelsoni), and moose (Alces alces) in their first year of life. The method by which the causative virus, Deer atadenovirus A, is maintained in the environment and transmitted to neonates is unknown. In this study, we investigated the potential transmission of the virus from dam to offspring in Rocky Mountain mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus) and elk in western Wyoming, US. We sampled dams before parturition during placement of

Wrist/Arm support to assist in fine motor control for essential tremor patients.

Steady-state hand tremors tend to exhibit simple harmonic motion associated with frequencies of 2-11 Hz, and maximum amplitudes of 7.8 inches. Tremors often present difficulties in applications dependent on fine motor control. A wrist/arm constraint is being designed to minimize the difficulty of performing fine motor functions via amplitude and frequency reduction of the hand tremor. Tremor amplitude and frequency reduction can be achieved by utilizing mechanical dampers as well as viscoelastic materials to cradle the wrist and hand. The goal of this project is to design a mechanical, table-m

Further safety enhancement of a specialized power assisted tricycle for a child with osteogenesis imperfecta type III and design of an adjustble hand power tricycle.

Several tricycles, one a customized power assisted tricycle, and the second a hand powered tricycle were developed, which offered a unique opportunity to serve multiple purposes in several children's development throughout Wyoming. In Both cases these tricycles provide the children with the opportunity to gain muscle mass, strength, coordination, and confidence. The power assisted tricycle was completed as a senior design project in 2002, and over time safety enhancements have been completed to make the tricycle safer for operation. Unfortunately, the safety system enhancements were not accept

The decentralized academic health center: a 21st-century model for rural health innovation.

Rural communities in the United States face persistent gaps in health care access, workforce capacity, and outcomes despite substantial federal investment. Academic health centers (AHCs) are central to clinical care, research, and education, but remain largely urban-based and structurally misaligned with rural needs. We propose the Decentralized Academic Health Center (D-AHC), a distributed model that integrates academic institutions, rural providers, public health systems, and communities through shared governance, interoperable data infrastructure, and digital health tools. Unlike traditiona

Diagnostic peritoneal lavage for identification of blastomycosis in a dog with peritoneal involvement.

A 6-year-old castrated male Dalmatian was evaluated because of hematemesis. The dog had lived its entire life in South Dakota and Wyoming and had never traveled outside of these states. Results of laboratory testing were compatible with iatrogenic acute renal failure and gastrointestinal tract ulceration secondary to previous nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug and corticosteroid administration. Differential diagnoses for clinical signs and laboratory abnormalities that existed prior to these treatments included multisystemic infectious or inflammatory disease and neoplasia. Rural Outreach: Door to Thrombolytics.

BACKGROUND: St. Mary's Regional Hospital (SMRH) has a 250-mile service area that encompasses rural areas of Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Arizona, and New Mexico. Transfers from smaller, more rural facilities account for 45% of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) volumes at SMRH. "Facility A" is an independently owned, single-hospital organization in rural western Colorado that relies on SMRH for higher levels of care. RATIONALE: Facility A utilizes thrombolytics (lytics) as first-line therapy for STEMI patients due to limited access to cardiac catheterization laboratories and exten

Liver metal concentrations in Greater Sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus).

Greater Sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) are a species of concern due to shrinking populations associated with habitat fragmentation and loss. Baseline health parameters for this species are limited or lacking, especially with regard to tissue metal concentrations. To obtain a range of tissue metal concentrations, livers were collected from 71 Greater Sage-grouse from Wyoming and Montana. Mean +/- SE metal concentrations (mg/kg wet weight) in liver were determined for vanadium (V) (0.12 +/- 0.01), chromium (Cr) (0.50 +/- 0.02), manganese (Mn) (2.68 +/- 0.11), iron (Fe) (1,019 +/- 103),

Detecting infiltration and impacts of introduced water using strontium isotopes.

Water introduced to surface drainages, such as agricultural and roadway runoff, mine drainage, or coalbed natural gas (CBNG)-produced water, potentially can be of environmental concern. In order to mitigate potential environmental effects, it may be important to be able to trace water discharged to the surface as it infiltrates and interacts with near-surface aquifers. We have chosen to study water withdrawn during CBNG production for isotope tracing in the hyporheic zone because it poses a variety of economic, environmental, and policy issues in the Rocky Mountain states. Ground water quality

Supply curves for using powder river basin coal to reduce sulfur emissions.

Supply curves were prepared for coal-fired power plants in the contiguous United States switching to Wyoming's Powder River Basin (PRB) low-sulfur coal. Up to 625 plants, representing approximately 44% of the nameplate capacity of all coal-fired plants, could switch. If all switched, more than dollars 8.8 billion additional capital would be required and the cost of electricity would increase by up to dollars 5.9 billion per year, depending on levels of plant derating. Coal switching would result in sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions reduction of 4.5 million t/yr. Increase in cost of electricity wo

Tuberculosis and Leprosy in the Past.

Findings from new methods have, during recent years, increased the knowledge of diseases in the past, good examples being tuberculosis (TB) and leprosy. Analyses of DNA and cell wall lipids have, in addition to osteology, been used to demonstrate these diseases in ancient bones. An old example of TB is from a bison existing in Wyoming, USA 17,000 years ago. TB has furthermore been shown in several ancient human skeletons, e.g., in a woman and a child who lived in the Eastern Mediterranean 9000 years ago and in humans who lived in East Asia and America before the arrival of the Europeans. These

Spatiotemporal Correlation Analysis of Hydraulic Fracturing and Stroke in the United States.

Hydraulic fracturing or fracking has led to a rapid growth of oil and gas production in the United States, but the impact of fracking on public health is an important but underresearched topic. We designed a methodology to study spatiotemporal correlations between the risk of fracking and stroke mortality. An annualized loss expectancy (ALE) model is applied to quantify the risk of fracking. The geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) model is used to analyze spatiotemporal correlations of stroke mortality, fracking ALE, and nine other socioeconomic- and health-related factors
