Integrated Assessment of Pb(II) and Cu(II) Metal Ion Phytotoxicity on Medicago sativa L., Triticum aestivum L., and Zea mays L. Plants: Insights into Germination Inhibition, Seedling Development, and Ecosystem Health.

Environmental pollution with heavy metals has become a problem of major interest due to the harmful effects of metal ions that constantly evolve and generate serious threats to both the environment and human health through the food chain. Recognizing the imperative need for toxicological assessments, this study revolves around elucidating the effects of Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions on three plant species; namely, Medicago sativa L., Triticum aestivum L., and Zea mays L. These particular species were selected due to their suitability for controlled laboratory cultivation, their potential resistance t

Maize pollen diet enhances malaria mosquito longevity and infectivity to Plasmodium parasites in Ethiopia.

Although larval diet quality may affect adult mosquito fitness, its impact on parasite development is scarce. Plant pollen from Zea mays, Typha latifolia, and Prosopis juliflora was ultraviolet-sterilized and examined for effects on larval development, pupation rate, adult mosquito longevity, survival and infectivity. The control larvae were fed Tetramin fish food as a comparator food. Four treatment and two control groups were used for each pollen diet, and each experimental tray had 25 larvae. Female An. arabiensis were starved overnight and exposed to infectious blood using a membrane-feedi

Field experiments to assess the remediation efficiency of metal-contaminated soil by flushing with ferric chloride followed by applying amendments.

The Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn removal efficiencies achieved by flushing with FeCl3 were determined in a field experiment using soil contaminated with multiple metals. Soil was first flushed with FeCl3 and then with FeCl3 or a mixture of chelators. Flushed soil was amended with lime and organic matter to revitalize the soil, then the soil was used to grow Zea mays and Brassica juncea. The heavy metal concentrations in groundwater were determined to assess the risks of leaching caused by soil flushing. The Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn removal efficiencies were 70%, 40%, 33%, and 17%, respectively, when FeCl3 (25

Significance of siderophore-producing cyanobacteria on enhancing iron uptake potentiality of maize plants grown under iron-deficiency.

BACKGROUND: In response to iron deficiency and other environmental stressors, cyanobacteria producing siderophores can help in ameliorating plant stress and enhancing growth physiological and biochemical processes. The objective of this work was to screen the potential of Arthrospira platensis, Pseudanabaena limnetica, Nostoc carneum, and Synechococcus mundulus for siderophore production to select the most promising isolate, then to examine the potentiality of the isolated siderophore in promoting Zea mays seedling growth in an iron-limited environment. RESULTS: Data of the screening experime

Three inhibitory phenolic acids against common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.) had a minimal effect on maize growth in vitro and in vivo.

With the increasing demand for non-chemical weed control methods, phenolic acids have shown promise due to their natural weed inhibitory potential. In this study, the inhibitory effect of ferulic acid, vanillic acid and p-coumaric acid was investigated on Ambrosia artemisiifolia L. and the selectivity of Zea mays L. against these phenolic acids was tested. The seeds of A. artemisiifolia and Z. mays were treated in vitro with three phenolic acids at doses of 200-600 × 10-7 mol and in vivo foliar on A. artemisiifolia and Z. mays plants. While all phenolic acids had effects on the early growth of

Description of a new Pratylenchus species from China (Tylenchida, Pratylenchidae).

Pratylenchus ekrami from maize (Zea mays) roots in Shenyang and luffa (Luffa cylindrica) roots in Dalian, China, are described in this paper. Nematodes from the two areas were identified consistently, and were characterized by a heavy cephalic sclerotization, extending posteriorly up to two body annuli, stylet 11-13 μm long, elongating conoid tail, and becoming thinner from vulva. Males were not found. Pratylenchus ekrami is close to Pratylenchus vulnus, but the most critical characteristics between the two species were the number of lip annuli, stylet size, and shape of stylet knobs. This spe

The function of hydrogen sulphide in iron availability: Sulfur nutrient or signaling molecule?

Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) has traditionally been considered as a phytotoxin, having deleterious effects on the plant growth and survival. Recently, it was recongnized as a potential signaling molecule involving in physiological regulation similar to nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO) in plants. In a recent study, we mainly focused on the signaling function of H2S in improving adaptation of Zea mays seedlings to iron deficiency. We reported that H2S was closely related to iron uptake, transport, and accumulation, and consequently increased chlorophyll biosynthesis, chloroplast development

Expression of maize PEPC in rice reveals a strategy for establishing a functional C4 CO2-concentrating mechanism.

Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) catalyzes the first irreversible reaction of the CO2 concentrating mechanism in C4 photosynthesis. Engineering C4 photosynthesis into the C3 plant rice (Oryza sativa) to increase photosynthetic efficiency requires sufficient activity and proper regulation of PEPC. In previous studies, in vivo PEPC activity remains low despite substantial in vitro activity. Here, we tested the activity and regulation of PEPC expressed in rice using either the coding (cDNA) or genomic (gDNA) sequences of the C4 photosynthetic isoform of PEPC from maize (Zea mays) driven by

Dealing with complex contamination: A novel approach with a combined bio-phytoremediation strategy and effective analytical techniques.

Phytoremediation is a sustainable technology capable of efficiently removing low or moderate contamination. However, complex pollution conditions can drastically reduce efficiency, as plants can show themselves sensitive to organic contaminants, growing slowly and thus impairing metals' absorption. In cases where the action of indigenous bacteria degrading hydrocarbons and promoting plant growth is not sufficient, more sophisticated strategies are necessary. This investigation aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a train of technologies that sees advanced phytoremediation in combination with

A framework to assess pharmaceutical accumulation in crops: from wastewater irrigation to consumption.

The reuse of treated wastewater for irrigation can inadvertently introduce a suite of emerging contaminants such as pharmaceuticals into agri-ecosystems. However, current monitoring efforts to characterise exposure usually focus on a limited range of analytes. A modelling framework was developed that employs a sequence of pre-developed models to predict accumulative potential in a model crop, Zea mays (corn), using chemical structure and excretion rate as the only model inputs. Z. mays was selected as the model crop as it is a major food source, stands as one of the highest cultivated crops gl

Safe utilization of arsenic-contaminated soil promoted by drip irrigation and chitosan aerogel: A case study in a potted experiment.

Arsenic contamination of soil poses a serious threat to ecological systems. Because phytoremediation is often inefficient, facilitating the safe utilisation of contaminated agricultural land is increasingly important. In this study, a polyacrylic acid/chitosan composite aerogel (PAA/CA) was combined with an agronomic regime comprising drip irrigation and the intercropping of Brassica rapa L. ssp. chinensis and Zea mays L. to facilitate safe crop production and localised arsenic interception. PAA/CA exhibited a sheath-core biphasic structure, high arsenic adsorption capacity and strong hydrophi

Evaluation of structured and seed-blend refuges for corn earworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) using emergence cages and screen-bagged ear methods.

The corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), is a major lepidopteran pest of corn (Zea mays L.) in the United States and is widely managed using transgenic corn hybrids expressing Bacillus thuringiensis (Berliner) (Bt) proteins. Seed-blend refuges, in which Bt and non-Bt seeds are mixed in fixed proportions, have been widely adopted as a convenient insect resistance management (IRM) strategy. However, concerns remain about their efficiency in producing susceptible moths compared to a structured block refuge. To evaluate this, five field experiments were conducted across Texas and Georgia during

Characterization and Synthesis of Alkaloidal Butenolides with Seed Germination Stimulating Properties from Angelica dahurica.

Two novel alkaloids, dahurine G (1) and its epimer dahurine H (2) were isolated from the roots of Angelica dahurica. The planar structures of 1 and 2 were elucidated through a comprehensive analysis of their spectroscopic and spectrometric data, including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared (IR), and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HRESIMS). Biomimetic synthesis, initiated with (2S,3R,4S)-4-hydroxyisoleucine, enabled the unequivocal determination of the absolute configurations of 1 and 2, while also yielding an unnatural analogue (3) as a byproduct. Assessment of experimental Bt events against fall armyworm and corn earworm in field corn.

Performance of experimental Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) MON events alone and pyramided with MON810 were evaluated over 3 yr in Georgia and Alabama. Ability of events to prevent whorl defoliation by the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), and natural ear feeding damage by the corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) was assessed. In each year, near-isogenic hybrids with novel single transformation events and crosses pyramided with the MON810 event were compared with the standard single MON810 event and nontransformed susceptible control. Events were tested for resistance to whorl

An apoplastic peptide activates salicylic acid signalling in maize.

Localized control of cell death is crucial for the resistance of plants to pathogens. Papain-like cysteine proteases (PLCPs) regulate plant defence to drive cell death and protection against biotrophic pathogens. In maize (Zea mays), PLCPs are crucial in the orchestration of salicylic acid (SA)-dependent defence signalling. Despite this central role in immunity, it remains unknown how PLCPs are activated, and which downstream signals they induce to trigger plant immunity. Here, we discover an immune signalling peptide, Z. mays immune signalling peptide 1 (Zip1), which is produced after salicyl

Sargassum-synthesized ZnO nanoparticles induce salt tolerance in maize plants through enhanced physiological and biochemical mechanisms.

Salinity is one of the biggest limitations of agriculture in semi-arid regions of the world. It negatively impacts the growth and yield of Zea mays L. Especially the seedling stage is extremely sensitive to salt stress. Sargassum tenerrimum J. Agardh. is a macroalgae which produces a plethora of important secondary metabolites, micro and macro-nutrients, polyamines and natural phytohormones etc. These compounds have been reported to improve plant growth and alleviate the harmful effects of salt stress. The current study explores the effectiveness of algal based Zinc Oxide nanoparticles (ZnOSt-

Revitalization of Soil Contaminated by Petroleum Products Using Materials That Improve the Physicochemical and Biochemical Properties of the Soil.

One of the key challenges in environmental protection is the reclamation of soils degraded by organic pollutants. Effective revitalization of such soils can contribute to improving the climate and the quality of feed and food, mainly by eliminating harmful substances from the food chain and by cultivating plants for energy purposes. To this end, research was carried out using two sorbents, vermiculite and agrobasalt, to detoxify soils contaminated with diesel oil and unleaded gasoline, using maize as an energy crop. The research was carried out in a pot experiment. The level of soil contaminat
