Fever of unknown origin due to zoonoses.

Fevers of unknown origin have been classified as classic, nosocomial, immune-deficient, and HIV-related. More than half of the 1407 human pathogens are zoonotic, making zoonotic infections an important subcategory in each of the classifications. This article describes both common and unusual zoonoses causing fevers of unknown origin. Simian immune virus is considered as a possible emerging infection. For special populations (the homeless, zoophiliacs, those whose occupation or leisure brings them in close contact with oceans or lakes, and veterinarians), zoonotic infection potentials are discu

Seroprevalence of zoonoses in a Cree community (Canada).

Cree trappers and hunters are at risk for contracting infectious diseases conveyed by wildlife. We performed a study in a Cree community (Canada) to determine the seroprevalence of 8 zoonotic infections among hunters and trappers for evidence of exposure to Trichinella sp., Toxoplasma gondii, Toxocara canis, Echinococcus granulosus, Leptospira sp., Coxiella burnetii, Francisella tularensis, and Sin Nombre virus. A total of 50 participants (28 women and 22 men) were included in this study. Results indicate no or infrequent exposure to the Sin Nombre virus (0%) and 3 of the 4 parasites investiga

The food-borne trematode zoonoses of Vietnam.

During the past couple of decades, numerous surveys for the occurrence and distribution of food-borne trematodes in Vietnam have been carried out. However, the majority of the data obtained have not been published in international journals, and therefore, the seriousness of these trematode parasitic zoonoses in the country has not been fully appreciated. To correct this, over 40 Vietnamese language reports and local publications were translated and organized as a status review for an international audience. The results show that such serious trematode zoonoses as clonorchiasis, opisthorchiasis

Cryptosporidium and Giardia-zoonoses: fact or fiction?

Giardia and Cryptosporidium are enteric protozoan parasites that infect a wide range of vertebrate hosts. Both are transmitted either by direct faecal/oral contact or by the ingestion of contaminated food or water. The discovery of morphologically similar organisms infecting humans and a variety of mammals and birds has led to the proposal that both Cryptosporidium and Giardia are zoonotic (i.e. transmitted in nature between humans and animals). Transmission between humans and animals has been supported by cross-infection studies. However, closer examination of many of these studies reveals li

[Cutaneous zoonoses transmitted by dogs and cats].

Pets like dogs and cats are responsible for a series of zoonotic disorders. Some of these diseases are inflicted by bites, scratches or licking. Others result from a close contact with fur, or are transmitted by ectoparasites or by the contaminated environment. Some systemic infectious and parasitic diseases are transmitted from animals to humans and vice versa. Such situation may lead to endemic problems in some communities.

Problems of microbial zoonoses in Hungary. (A review).

Hungarian data of 36 zoonotic diseases are summarized. These illnesses cause problems not only for health, public health and veterinary health services but for the society and their importance has increased. Changing character of an old pathogen (Salmonella enteritidis PT4) resulted in new epidemiological situation. The number of cases of food-borne zoonotic diseases has rapidly grown. The number of pets has elevated and in consequence the possibility of an infection of owners, breaders, sellers and other persons has also grown. Growing number of HIV positive patients as well as ill persons tr

[Pets as permanent excretors of zoonoses pathogens].

When scrutinizing zoonoses with regard to risks for human beings, the spectrum of pathogens with dogs, cats and birds leading to persistent infections and consequently to the fact that the animals become carriers and permanent excretors is relatively small. Most of the zoonoses cause clinical symptoms and will be taken care of correspondingly. With regard to dogs there is a multitude of persistent infections that are transferred from the pet to the human being and vice versa. In reality, however, the importance of the dog as permanent excretor of zoonosis pathogens endangering human health is

Diagnostically Challenging Case: Coexistence of Two Zoonoses.

A male patient presented with fever, cytopenia, and hepatosplenomegaly. The patient's Brucella tube agglutination test was positive at titers 1:640. Due to the lack of response to brucellosis treatment, additional tests were performed. Leishmania amastigotes were seen in the second bone marrow biopsy preparations. Leishmania PCR was positive, and visceral leishmaniasis (VL) was diagnosed. Here, we present a case of VL and brucellosis coinfection that presented with B symptoms (fever, night sweats, and weight loss) and cytopenia and was difficult to diagnose.

[One Health: Re-thinking of zoonoses control].

Under the dual pressure of emerging zoonoses and the difficulty in eliminating conventional zoonoses, many uncertainties in global control of infectious diseases are challenging the achievement of sustainable development goals set by the United Nations General Assembly. One Health, developed on the basis of understanding the relationship between human diseases and animal diseases, is conducive to the prevention and control of zoonoses. The connotation of "One Health" is mainly explained by three aspects, namely the systems thinking mode of "unity of environment and man", the practice guidance

Fascioliasis and other plant-borne trematode zoonoses.

Fascioliasis and other food-borne trematodiases are included in the list of important helminthiases with a great impact on human development. Six plant-borne trematode species have been found to affect humans: Fasciola hepatica, Fasciola gigantica and Fasciolopsis buski (Fasciolidae), Gastrodiscoides hominis (Gastrodiscidae), Watsonius watsoni and Fischoederius elongatus (Paramphistomidae). Whereas F. hepatica and F. gigantica are hepatic, the other four species are intestinal parasites. The fasciolids and the gastrodiscid cause important zoonoses distributed throughout many countries, while W

Emerging infections in animals--potential new zoonoses?

It is well recognized that most emerging diseases of humans are zoonotic, and that the forces working to create emerging diseases in humans are also operating in animal populations. However, what is often overlooked is that emerging human diseases are usually preceded by the emergence of the same pathogen in an animal population. In fact, the developing disease in animals acts as a link allowing the disease to take hold and wreck havoc in public health. Numerous examples--Rift Valley fever, monkeypox, Nipah, and Ebola--serve to underscore this linkage and to highlight the increasing interconne

Epidemiology of marine fish-borne parasitic zoonoses.

Most parasites of marine animals are of little public health concern; however, some helminths are capable of infecting humans. Marine zoonotic infections in humans result from consumption of contaminated edible tissues or products of seafood or, to a lesser extent, from physical contact with contaminated seafood. Worldwide, over 50 species of helminth parasites from fishes, crabs, crayfishes, snails, and bivalves are known to produce human infections. Most helminth zoonoses are rare and invoke only slight to moderate injury; however, some are more prevalent and pose serious potential health ha
