Etiologic factors for recurrent miscarriage (RM) include autoimmune diseases, the most frequently antiphospholipid syndrome and thyroiditis. Some women who suffer from RM might also have an altered immune system. We aimed to evaluate possible associations between anti-thyroid and anti-phospholipid antibodies in women with RM. In a retrospective case series 1 on 156 women with RM, major outcome parameters were antibodies against cardiolipin, β2-glycoprotein I, thyreoperoxidase (TPO-Ab), and thyroglobulin (TG-Ab). Significant (p<0.05) positive correlations were found between TPO-Ab and TG-Ab (r=

BACKGROUND/AIM: Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune disorder clinically characterized by arterial or venous thrombosis and/or specific obstetric complications and presence of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) in the serum. It occurs in 0.3% of pregnant women, while 1% of them have two spontaneous abortions. The aim of this study was to analyze the frequency of biphospholipid antibodies in pregnant women with recurrent spontaneous abortions.
METHODS: We analyzed 60 pregnant women who had two or more recurrent miscarriages. The control group included 60 healthy pregnant women. We a

OBJECTIVE: To study the value of apolipoprotein H (apoH) gene expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) and urinary N-Acetyl-beta-D-Glucosaminidase (NAG) and retinal-binding protein (RBP) in the early diagnosis of renal function damage in neonates.
METHODS: Sixty sick neonates who renal function damage probably occurred were enrolled. The blood and urinary samples were collected twice within 48 hrs following admission, with an interval of 12-24 hrs. Expression of apoH gene in PBMC was determined with RT-PCR. The levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine, and urinary acti

OBJECTIVE: To assess the strength of association between recurrent fetal loss (RFL) and presence of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) in women without autoimmune disease, and to examine whether magnitude of association varies according to type or titer of antibody and timing of fetal loss.
METHODS: We searched Medline and Current Contents for articles published between 1975 and 2003 with terms denoting early (less than 13 weeks) and late (less than 24 weeks) RFL associated with various aPL. Published case-control, cohort, and cross-sectional studies rated moderate or strong were included in o

Long COVID syndrome (LCS) is characterized by persistent multi-system manifestations with an unclear underlying pathophysiology. Identifying the genetic and immunological factors associated with LCS is essential for improved risk stratification and clinical management. This study investigated whether incorporating HLA-DRB1* and HLA-DQB1* genotyping data could enhance the predictive value of laboratory parameters for identifying individuals at higher risk of developing LCS. Demographic characteristics and relevant clinical history data were extracted from the medical records of 88 individuals d

Antibodies to beta2-glycoprotein I (anti-beta2GPI) have been associated with recurrent thrombosis and pregnancy morbidity. However, the prevalence of anti-beta2GPI in children suffering from cerebral infarction is unknown. We report on a 20-month-old boy who had an ischemic stroke, secondary to antiphospholipid syndrome with high titers of immunoglobulin G anti-beta2GPI (first titer: 132 U; second titer 6 weeks later: 350 U; normal range: 0-100 U). Anticardiolipin antibodies and lupus anticoagulant tests were negative. All other causes of infarction were excluded. Laboratory studies showed ant

Beta2-glycoprotein I (beta2GPI) is a plasma protein suspected to have a role in inhibition of thrombosis. This suspicion is reinforced by the observation that beta2GPI is the major target for autoantibodies in the antiphospholipid syndrome. However, little is known about its circulating levels in common thrombotic diseases or inflammation. We measured beta2GPI levels in 344 healthy controls, 58 normal pregnancies, 102 patients with non-haemorrhagic stroke, 121 patients with acute coronary syndrome and 200 patients with elevated C-reactive protein (CRP). In healthy individuals, we found a stron

Purified mRNA's encoding the HLA-A and -B antigen heavy chains or beta 2-microglobulin were prepared from human B lymphoid cells by positive hybridization selection procedures. The role of chain association in the biosynthesis and intracellular transport of HLA-A and -B antigens was investigated by injecting these mRNA species into Xenopus laevis oocytes and following the fates of the translated products by immunoprecipitation. When mRNA encoding beta 2-microglobulin from the B lymphoblastoid cell line MST was coinjected with mRNA encoding the HLA-A and -B antigen heavy chains from the Burkitt

Erythema nodosum is a dermatologic condition characterized by painful, erythematous nodules on the anterior surfaces of the lower extremities. Its association with a variety of conditions has been previously described. We present three cases of erythema nodosum in patients with elevated anticardiolipin antibodies. In one patient, a temporal relationship was seen in the simultaneous detection of antibodies and skin lesions. We propose an association between erythema nodosum and the antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APS).

Antiphospholipid antibodies targeting β2-glycoprotein I (β2GPI) are a hallmark of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), associated with an increased risk of thrombosis and pregnancy morbidity. Among these, antibodies targeting domain I (DI) are common in individuals at higher risk; however, their epitopes and prevalence among APS phenotypes remain unclear. Here, we use a large collection of 29 structurally and functionally validated β2GPI variants to provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms of autoantibody recognition in APS. Using the prototypic human-derived monoclonal anti-DI antibody

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) is a major chronic liver ailment caused by alcohol overconsumption and abuse. Apolipoprotein H (APOH) participates in lipid metabolism and might have a potential regulatory role in ALD. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the effects of ApoH on alcohol-induced liver injury and gut microbiota dysbiosis.
METHODS: ApoH-/- mice were generated and the synergic alcoholic steatohepatitis mouse model was constructed, which were used to assess liver function and pathological changes.
RESULTS: ApoH-/- mice clearly exhibited spontaneous steatohepatitis
