Antimicrobial susceptibilities of strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in Bangkok, Thailand: 1994-1995.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Failure of uncomplicated gonococcal infections acquired in the Far East to respond to doses of ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have been identified in Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In the Republic of the Philippines, 54.3% of strains exhibited decreased susceptibility to fluoroquinolones; 12% of strains were resistant to ciprofloxacin. This study was undertaken to compare the antimicrobial susceptibilities of gonococcal isolates in Bangkok, Thailand, with those in the Republic of the Ph

Research on the application of a high-throughput fully automated bacterial growth curve monitor for screening natural antibacterial compounds.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria poses a severe challenge to infection treatment, creating an urgent need for novel antimicrobial agents. Monomers derived from natural products exhibit multi-mechanism antibacterial properties with low resistance development potential. However, evaluation of these monomers is frequently hampered by color interference in traditional turbidimetric methods. This study developed a high-throughput fully automated bacterial growth curve monitor (HTFA-BGM) to provide a new tool for screening and assessing antimicrobial monomers. METHODS: The H

Investigating the changing taxonomy and antimicrobial resistance of bacteria isolated from door handles in a new infectious disease ward pre- and post-patient admittance.

UNLABELLED: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are a significant burden to health systems, with antimicrobial resistance (AMR) further compounding the issue. The hospital environment plays a significant role in the development of HAIs, with microbial surveillance providing the foundation for interventions. We sampled 40 door handles at a newly built hospital prior to patients being admitted and then 6 and 12 months after this date. We utilized 16S rDNA sequencing to identify unique colonies, disc diffusion assays to assess the antibiotic resistance of Staphylococcus spp., and whole-genome

Resistome, mobilome, and virulome explored in clinical isolates derived from acne patients in Egypt: unveiling unique traits of an emerging coagulase-negative Staphylococcus pathogen.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are a group of gram-positive staphylococcal species that naturally inhabit the healthy human skin and mucosa. The clinical impact of CoNS-associated infections has recently been regarded as a challenge for diagnosis and therapeutic options. CoNS-associated infections are primarily caused by bacterial resistance to antibiotics and biofilm formation. As antibiotics are still the most used treatment, this problem will likely persist in the future. The present study aimed to investigate the resistance and virulence of CoNS recovered from various acne lesions

Epidemiology of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus in Slovakia, 2020 - Emergence of an Epidemic USA300 Clone in Community and Hospitals.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a leading cause of health care-associated infections. Additionally, over the decades, the spread of community-associated (CA-MRSA) clones has become a serious problem. The aim of this study was to gain data on the current epidemiology of MRSA in Slovakia. Between January 2020 and March 2020, single-patient MRSA isolates (invasive and/or colonizing) were collected in Slovakia from hospitalized inpatients (16 hospitals) or outpatients (77 cities). Isolates were characterized via antimicrobial susceptibility testing, spa typing, SCCmec typing,

Identification of Primary Antimicrobial Resistance Drivers in Agricultural Nontyphoidal Salmonella enterica Serovars by Using Machine Learning.

Nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) is a leading global cause of bacterial foodborne morbidity and mortality. Our ability to treat severe NTS infections has been impaired by increasing antimicrobial resistance (AMR). To understand and mitigate the global health crisis AMR represents, we need to link the observed resistance phenotypes with their underlying genomic mechanisms. Broiler chickens represent a key reservoir and vector for NTS infections, but isolates from this setting have been characterized in only very low numbers relative to clinical isolates. In this study, we sequenced and assembled 9

In vivo selection of Enterobacter aerogenes with reduced susceptibility to cefepime and carbapenems associated with decreased expression of a 40 kDa outer membrane protein and hyperproduction of AmpC beta-lactamase.

The mechanism(s) of resistance or decreased susceptibility to cefepime (FEP) and/or imipenem (IMP) in three consecutive isolates of Enterobacter aerogenes (Ea1, Ea2 and Ea3) cultured from bronchial aspirates of the same patient after treatment with ceftriaxone and FEP were studied. Identification was performed with the VITEK 2 system. All three isolates showed identical pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns and were resistant (minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs)) to cefoxitin (MIC, >1024 mg/L), cefotaxime (CTX; MIC, 32-128 mg/L) and ceftazidime (CAZ; MIC, 32-128 mg/L) but susceptible

Contamination of Hospital Inanimate Surfaces with Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase producing bacteria at Ocean Road Cancer Institute, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing bacteria are the most common contaminants on hospital surfaces. Hospitalized patients, especially those with cancer, have a higher likelihood of acquiring hospital-associated infections in a contaminated environment. Outbreaks of MRSA and ESBL-producing bacteria linked to contaminated inanimate hospital surfaces are a well-documented threat. Cancer patients, who often have prolonged hospital stays, are particularly at risk of acquiring these multidrug-resistant (MDR) infections.

Distribution of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (blaSHV, blaTEM, blaCTX-M) and AmpC β-lactamases -encoding genes among second- and third-generation cephalosporin-resistant Escherichia coli clinical isolates in Sana'a, Yemen.

BACKGROUND: The global dissemination of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) and AmpC β-lactamases among Escherichia coli poses a therapeutic challenge, contributing to the failure of empirical broad-spectrum antibiotic regimens. In conflict-affected and resource-limited settings like Yemen, the lack of molecular surveillance compromises infection control. This study aimed to determine the genotypic distribution of ESBL-, AmpC-, and dual-producing E. coli isolates resistant to second- and third-generation cephalosporins (specifically, ceftazidime, cefotaxime, or cefoxitin) across major health

Luciferase reporter mycobacteriophage (TM4::GeNL) enables rapid assessment of drug susceptibilities and inducible macrolide resistance in Mycobacterium abscessus complex.

Mycobacterium abscessus (MAB) infections are challenging to treat due to high-level resistance to anti-tuberculosis drugs, carbapenems, fluoroquinolones, and tetracyclines. Clarithromycin and amikacin are considered cornerstone drugs for MAB treatment due to their superior efficacy; however, assessing clarithromycin susceptibility typically takes 7 to 14 days because of inducible macrolide resistance. We developed a 48 h luciferase reporter mycobacteriophage drug susceptibility testing (LRM-DST) assay using TM4::GeNL to evaluate MAB drug susceptibility. For this proof-of-principle study, we pe

The Prevalence of Multidrug-Resistant Uropathogenic Bacterial Profile With Antibiotic Susceptibility Patterns Among the Community and Hospitalized Patients During COVID Waves.

Background and objective Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common infectious disease affecting people of various ages and genders and are prevalent in different geographical locations. However, the way Gram-positive and Gram-negative (UTI) germs react to antibiotic treatment varies significantly. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has increased the frequency of secondary bacterial superinfection, leading to a spike in ongoing recommendations for antibiotic treatment, both therapeutic and preventative. In this study, we aimed to assess uropathogenic bacterial resistance and sh

Occurrence and temporal distribution of extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli in clams from the Central Adriatic, Italy.

The spread of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli is a major public health issue. Bivalves are filter-feeder animals capable of bioaccumulating the microorganisms present in water. This physiological characteristic makes them both good indicators of environmental contamination and possible carriers of pathogenic bacteria, including those resistant to antimicrobials. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of ESBL-producing E. coli in clams (n = 308) collected from harvesting areas of the Central Adriatic Sea between 2018 and 2019. Assessing the potential for specimen pooling to streamline nosocomial surveillance of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

In hospitals, identification of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is important to reduce possible transmissions and serious outcomes. Traditional culture and susceptibility testing requires 48-72 h, whereas Xpert MRSA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) can provide accurate MRSA detection in <1 h. Unfortunately, the high cost of such commercial PCRs precludes their use in many laboratories. Using MRSA as a model, this study hypothesized that specimen pooling in a setting of low prevalence could reduce PCR costs and provide rapid results. A total of 424 sequential nasal/groin speci
