Assisted coiling using LEO Baby or LVIS Jr stents: Report of six cases.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Endovascular treatment of broad-neck, complex cerebral aneurysms is a challenging issue. Placement of a stent over the aneurysm neck and secondary coil embolization prevents coil migration and allows dense packing of the coils. Another challenge is represented by distal aneurysms situated in small vessels. In these cases, the use of little stents, which we are going call ministents, could be a good decision. These low-profile intracranial ministents can be deployed into arteries with diameters between 1.5 and 3.10 mm and delivered through microcatheters with an internal

Effect of full-service partnerships on homelessness, use and costs of mental health services, and quality of life among adults with serious mental illness.

CONTEXT: Chronically homeless adults with severe mental illness are heavy users of costly inpatient and emergency psychiatric services. Full-service partnerships (FSPs) provide housing and engage clients in treatment. OBJECTIVE: To examine changes in recovery outcomes, mental health service use and costs, and quality of life associated with participation in FSPs. DESIGN: A quasi-experimental, difference-in-difference design with a propensity score-matched control group was used to compare mental health service use and costs of FSP with public mental health services. Recovery outcomes were co

Risk of alcohol-exposed pregnancies among low-income, illicit drug-using women.

OBJECTIVES: Poor women of childbearing age who use crack, cocaine, marijuana, and heroin may be at risk for having an alcohol-exposed pregnancy because of concurrent alcohol use. Women who use illicit drugs may not know the harmful effects of fetal alcohol exposure. Fetal alcohol exposure is a leading cause of developmental disabilities and mental retardation. METHODS: We report findings of a survey administered to 2672 women 18-44 years of age in settings serving low-income women, including an urban jail, a drug treatment facility, and healthcare facilities in Florida, Virginia, and Texas. Efficacy and tolerability of a new synergized pyrethrins thermofobic foam in comparison with benzyl benzoate in the treatment of scabies in convicts: the ISAC study (Studio Della scabbia in ambiente carcerario).

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a very common skin infection in convicts. The SIMSPE Society (Società Italiana di Medicina e Sanità Penitenziaria) has organized and conducted a multicentre, randomized, comparative, parallel group, investigator-blinded trial to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of synergized pyrethrins foam (PF) in comparison with benzyl benzoate (BB) lotion. METHODS: A total of 240 convicted patients, enrolled in eight National Jail Institutions, with a clinical diagnosis of scabies, were treated with PF (n = 120) for three consecutive days or BB (n = 120) for five consecutive da

Criminal history as a prognostic indicator in the treatment of homeless people with severe mental illness.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the clinical problems and treatment outcomes of homeless people with severe mental illness and a history of incarceration. METHODS: Between May 1994 and June 1998, a total of 5,774 people entered assertive community treatment case management services in the Access to Community Care and Effective Services and Supports (ACCESS) demonstration program at 18 sites in nine states. This study used data from reassessments at 12 months after program entry. Analysis of variance was used to compare baseline status and 12-month outcomes for clients with a lifetime incarcera

Estimated Costs and Outcomes Associated With Use and Nonuse of Medications for Opioid Use Disorder During Incarceration and at Release in Massachusetts.

IMPORTANCE: Most prisons and jails in the US discontinue medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) upon incarceration and do not initiate MOUD prior to release. OBJECTIVE: To model the association of MOUD access during incarceration and at release with population-level overdose mortality and OUD-related treatment costs in Massachusetts. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This economic evaluation used simulation modeling and cost-effectiveness with costs and quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) discounted at 3% to compare MOUD treatment strategies in a corrections cohort and an open cohort re

Court personnel attitudes towards medication-assisted treatment: A state-wide survey.

BACKGROUND: Despite its efficacy, medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is rarely available in the criminal justice system in the United States, including in problem-solving courts or diversionary settings. Previous studies have demonstrated criminal justice administrators' hostility towards MAT, especially in prisons and jails. Yet, few studies have examined attitudes among court personnel or compared beliefs among different types of personnel. Also, few studies have explored the relationship between MAT education/training and attitudes. Finally, few studies have directly compared attitudes tow

Reducing Recidivism After Traumatic Brain Injury: Results From the Re-entry Continuum for Brain Injury (RCBI) Trial.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the effects of an intervention (Re-entry Continuum for Brain Injury [RCBI]) designed to support individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) pending release from prison. RCBI started about 6 months prior to release. The aims were to examine the impact of RCBI on (1) recidivism up to 3 years postrelease and (2) participants' behavioral infractions, self-efficacy, aggression, negative attributions, and executive functioning while still incarcerated. DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial comparing RCBI with treatment as usual (TAU). Assessment times were: time 1 (∼6 months

Effects of personal and work-related stressful life events on mental health among middle-aged and older Australians: longitudinal evidence from 16 waves of cohort data.

BACKGROUND: Stressful life events are recognised determinants of mental health, yet their effects in later life remain unclear. Reflecting increasing longevity, our study examined links between stressful life events, both personal and work-related, and mental health outcomes among middle-aged and older Australians aged 50 and over. METHODS: We analysed 95 603 person-year observations from 11 187 individuals across 16 waves (2006-2021) of the nationally representative Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Survey. Key personal (eg, separation, physical violence, serious personal in

Opioid Use Disorder Treatment Decision Making And Care Navigation Upon Release From Prison: A Feasibility Study.

PURPOSE: Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a medical condition that is effectively treated with medications. A major challenge in breaking the cycle of OUD and related illegal activity is seamlessly introducing medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) as individuals leave jail or prison. We examined the feasibility of a pilot intervention to link participants to ongoing MOUD and psychosocial supports following release from custody. METHODS: The study enrolled adults with a history of OUD released from Washington State prisons to Department of Corrections (DOC) community supervision. Participants

[Socio-demographic and clinical characteristics of adolescents hospitalized in French units for inmates: Results of a cross-sectional study].

BACKGROUND: In France, on the first of January 2018, 772 underage persons were in jail or about 1.1 % of the incarcerated population. The prevalence of psychiatric disorders among those inmates is high. As a result psychiatric care (and particularly full-time hospitalization) is essential for this population. The unités hospitalières spécialement aménagées (UHSA) are full-time inpatient hospitalization units for inmates in France. Adults but also underage inmates can be admitted to UHSA for voluntary or involuntary hospitalization. However, no study about the characteristics of young patients

The effect on problematic drinking behavior of a brief motivational interview shortly after a first arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol: a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: In medical settings, motivational interviewing-based "brief intervention" (BI) counseling reduces alcohol-related risk-taking behavior and harm in high-risk populations. Individuals arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) are another at-risk population. We sought to determine whether a BI administered shortly after a first DUI arrest might decrease problematic drinking behavior. METHODS: We conducted a single-center, parallel-group, double-blinded superiority randomized trial (NCT01270217), enrolling first-time DUI arrestees at a county jail from December 2010 th

Patient preferences for medications to treat opioid use disorder in carceral settings: Implications for tailored implementation and service delivery.

BACKGROUND: A critical lack of knowledge exists about incarcerated individuals' preferences for the provision of medications to treat opioid use disorder (MOUD) in carceral settings (i.e., jail, prison) and of multilevel factors that influence preferences (e.g., health needs, institutional policies). This gap limits the ability to tailor MOUD programs effectively to patient needs and optimize outcomes within correctional systems. METHODS: In 2025, 28 adults receiving MOUD in the community in the Northeastern United States and who previously received MOUD while incarcerated completed an in-dep

Enhancing community integration after incarceration: findings from a prospective study of an intensive peer support intervention for veterans with an historical comparison group.

BACKGROUND: The transition to the community after incarceration presents challenges for returning citizens, including the immediate need to secure housing, employment, and income. Additionally, health care is essential for this population due to high rates of chronic physical health and mental health problems and substance use disorders. There is growing recognition of the need for interventions that support returning citizens as they navigate community reintegration while simultaneously tending to physical and behavioral health needs. We developed and pilot tested a peer support intervention

Cohort profile: seek, test, treat and retain United States criminal justice cohort.

BACKGROUND: The STTR treatment cascade provides a framework for research aimed at improving the delivery of services, care and outcomes of PLWH. The development of effective approaches to increase HIV diagnoses and engage PLWH in subsequent steps of the treatment cascade could lead to earlier and sustained ART treatment resulting in viral suppression. There is an unmet need for research applying the treatment cascade to improve outcomes for those with criminal justice involvement. METHODS: The Seek, Test, Treat, and Retain (STTR) criminal justice (CJ) cohort combines data from 11 studies acro

The Effect of Hospital Trauma Level on Odds of Non-home Discharge from Hospital Following Dens Fracture.

INTRODUCTION: Dens fractures are cervical spine injuries with high morbidity and mortality in the elderly. Many patients require discharge to rehabilitation facilities or skilled nursing care, which impacts patient recovery, healthcare system resource allocation, and prognosis. This study evaluated the effect of trauma center level designation on discharge disposition in patients with dens fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study using data from a Texas State Trauma Registry from 2020 to 2022. Patient demographics, injury characteristics, and outcomes were queried

Associations between pharmacotherapy for opioid dependence and clinical and criminal justice outcomes among adults with co-occurring serious mental illness.

Adults suffering from a serious mental illness (SMI) and a substance use disorder are at especially high risk for poor clinical outcomes and also arrest and incarceration. Pharmacotherapies for treating opioid dependence could be a particularly important mode of treatment for opioid-dependent adults with SMI to lower their risk for overdose, high-cost hospitalizations, repeated emergency department visits, and incarceration, given relapse rates are very high following detoxification in the absence of one of the three FDA-approved pharmacotherapies. This study estimates the effects of methadone
