Surgery of the cornea.

Corneal surgery is a common and essential part of veterinary ophthalmology and ranges from simple linear keratotomy for indolent ulcers to penetrating keratoplasty for restoration of optical clarity. Success in corneal surgery relies on an understanding of corneal anatomy, physiology and wound healing, meticulous attention to detail, microsurgical equipment and techniques, and use of appropriate preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative medications. Surgical management of corneal disease is indicated for corneal ulceration, excision of a mass lesion, reconstructive procedures, therapeuti

Management of delayed corneal epithelial healing after refractive surgery: five case reports.

BACKGROUND: Transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy using Smart Pulse Technology (SPT-TransPRK) is currently the leading method for superficial refractive surgery, offering advantages such as a non-contact procedure, shorter operation times, and excellent patient cooperation. Laser ablation of the corneal epithelium, Bowman's membrane, and the stroma can effectively correct refractive errors. Thus, the complete healing of the corneal epithelium post-surgery is essential for ensuring good vision. Refractive surgeons should enhance their understanding of corneal wound healing mechanisms and

Nerve growth factor promotes corneal epithelial migration by enhancing expression of matrix metalloprotease-9.

PURPOSE: Nerve growth factor (NGF) is a neuropeptide essential for the development, survival, growth, and differentiation of corneal cells. Its effects are mediated by both TrkA and p75 receptors. Clinically relevant use of NGF was introduced to treat neurotrophic ulcerations in patients. Herein, we examine the mechanisms by which NGF enhances epithelial wound healing both in vivo and in vitro. METHODS: An animal model using adult hens was implemented for the in vivo experiments. Laser ablation keratectomy was performed and animals were observed for up to 7 days. Epithelial healing was measur
