Fecal bacterial contamination in natural water reservoirs as an indicator of seasonal infection by Opisthorchis viverrini in snail intermediate hosts.

Opisthorchis viverrini, a carcinogenic liver fluke, requires Bithynia snails as the first intermediate host, which release cercariae after ingesting fluke eggs from contaminated water. Fecal bacterial contamination and O. viverrini-infected Bithynia snails were investigated in samples collected from natural water reservoirs in Ban Phai, Chonnabot and Muang Districts (Ban Lerngpeuy) in Khon Kaen Province, northeast Thailand, where there is a high incidence of cholangiocarcinoma. Water was sampled and examined six times (February, April, June, August, October and December 2006). The most probabl

Outbreak of Q fever, Florac, Southern France, Spring 2007.

INTRODUCTION: In May 2007, five patients with Q fever-like symptoms were reported in an agricultural educational center in the rural southern French town of Florac. An investigation was undertaken to identify the outbreak source and risk factors for infection, and to implement control measures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We undertook active case finding. Patients were defined as individuals with an unexplained fever of ≥38.5°C who lived in, worked in, or visited Florac between April 1 and June 30, 2007. Patients were confirmed by a positive Q fever serology test. A cross-sectional survey with a s

The air-borne distribution of zoonotic agents from livestock waste spreading and microbiological risk to fresh produce from contaminated irrigation sources.

AIMS: To assess the risks of zoonotic agents in dissemination of livestock wastes into the environment by airborne distribution. To subsequently assess the survival time of zoonotic agents, introduced in irrigation water, on the phylloplane of produce. METHODS AND RESULTS: An Escherichia coli marker was introduced into pig slurry which was spread using a rain gun sprayer. Air sampling was undertaken to determine the distance reached by the marker. No recoveries were observed at a distance of 250 m. Borehole water, contaminated with zoonotic agents, was used to irrigate field plots sown with l

Transgenic mice expressing bacterial phytase as a model for phosphorus pollution control.

We have developed transgenic mouse models to determine whether endogenous expression of phytase transgenes in the digestive tract of monogastric animals can increase the bioavailability of dietary phytate, a major but indigestible form of dietary phosphorus. We constructed phytase transgenes composed of the appA phytase gene from Escherichia coli regulated for expression in salivary glands by the rat R15 proline-rich protein promoter or by the mouse parotid secretory protein promoter. Transgenic phytase is highly expressed in the parotid salivary glands and secreted in saliva as an enzymatical

Cytogenetic biomonitoring of Indian women cooking with biofuels: micronucleus and chromosomal aberration tests in peripheral blood lymphocytes.

India currently has the largest number of indoor air pollution-related health problems in the world, with three-quarters of its households burning wood, cowdung, or crop residues ("traditional" biomass fuels) for cooking, and the remainder using kerosene and relatively clean-burning liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Combustion of these fuels produces various pollutants that may cause serious health effects in exposed populations. In this study, the micronucleus (MN) and chromosomal aberration (CA) assays were used to evaluate the relative amounts of DNA damage produced by the use of these cooking

Gut microbiome profiles of two limestone forest-dwelling langurs show stronger influence of host-associated factors than environment.

BACKGROUND: Host-associated factor and the environment play crucial roles in shaping the composition and function of the gut microbiome. Considerable debate exists regarding the relative influence of host-associated and environmental factors on the gut microbiome. To determine the relative importance of host-associated factors and environmental factors in langurs, we employed metagenomic sequencing to examine differences in the gut microbiome of the white-headed langurs (Trachypithecus leucocephalus) and François' langurs (T. francoisi). RESULTS: The results revealed that the alpha diversity

Antimicrobial-resistant Escherichia Coli and Salmonella in poultry production and spread and effect in the one health framework.

Antimicrobial resistance in poultry-associated Escherichia coli and Salmonella poses a significant threat to animal, food, and public health, particularly when viewed through the One Health framework. Consider the statistics: global data reveal substantial resistance to tetracyclines (45-92 %), aminopenicillins (38-85 %), sulfonamides (40-78 %), and fluoroquinolones (25-68 %). Additionally, a considerable proportion of isolates (32-74 %) exhibit multidrug resistance. However, the manifestation of this resistance varies widely both between and within countries, influenced by factors such as ant

Asymptomatic Carriage of C. botulinum Type D/C in Broiler Flocks as the Source of Contamination of a Massive Botulism Outbreak on a Dairy Cattle Farm.

In winter 2018, a massive type D/C cattle botulism outbreak occurred on a mixed dairy and broiler farm in France. An investigation was conducted based on the hypothesis of asymptomatic carriage in poultry. We set out to identify the source of contamination of the dairy cattle and to monitor the contamination of broilers over time, including the hatchery delivering chicks to the farm. Environmental samples were collected on the farm during the cattle outbreak (n = 40), after the outbreak for three successive broiler flocks (n = 128), and once in the hatchery delivering the chicks (n = 58). Thes

Nitrate and Nitrogen Oxides: Sources, Health Effects and Their Remediation.

Increased use of nitrogenous (N) fertilizers in agriculture has significantly altered the global N-cycle because they release nitrogenous gases of environmental concerns. The emission of nitrous oxide (N2O) contributes to the global greenhouse gas accumulation and the stratospheric ozone depletion. In addition, it causes nitrate leaching problem deteriorating ground water quality. The nitrate toxicity has been reported in a number of studies showing the health hazards like methemoglobinemia in infants and is a potent cause of cancer. Despite these evident negative environmental as well as heal

Occupational Animal Exposure Among Persons with Campylobacteriosis and Cryptosporidiosis - Nebraska, 2005-2015.

Campylobacter and Cryptosporidium are two common causes of gastroenteritis in the United States. National incidence rates measured for these pathogens in 2015 were 17.7 and 3.0 per 100,000 population, respectively; Nebraska was among the states with the highest incidence for both campylobacteriosis (26.6) and cryptosporidiosis (≥6.01) (1). Although campylobacteriosis and cryptosporidiosis are primarily transmitted via consumption of contaminated food or water, they can also be acquired through contact with live animals or animal products, including through occupational exposure (2). This expos

Detection of QTL controlling feed efficiency and excretion in chickens fed a wheat-based diet.

BACKGROUND: Improving feed efficiency is a major goal in poultry production in order to reduce production costs, increase the possibility of using alternative feedstuffs and decrease the volume of manure. However, in spite of their economic and environmental impact, very few quantitative trait loci (QTL) have been reported on these traits. Thus, we undertook the detection of QTL on 820 meat-type chickens from a F2 cross between D- and D+ lines that were divergently selected on low or high digestive efficiency at 3 weeks of age. Birds were measured for growth between 0 and 23 days, feed intake

Anthropogenic soils and land use patterns in relation to small mammal and flea abundance in plague endemic area of Western Usambara Mountains, Tanzania.

Heterogeneity in the landscapes of West Usambara Mountains on land use and human activities has been reported. However, the interface of land use patterns and human modified soils with small mammal and flea abundance for possible explanation of plague has not been explored. This study was carried out to determine the link between anthropogenic soils and land use patterns on small mammal and flea abundance and the occurrence of reported plague in the Western Usambara Mountains in Tanzania. Standard soil survey methods were used to identify and describe soils and land use patterns on lower slope

Mineral nutrition of plants: a short history of plant physiology.

The development of the knowledge on the mineral nutrition of plants begins between the 17th and 18th centuries when some European naturalists gave the first experimental evidences of what had been empirically known for about two millennia. The works of Hales and Ingenhousz were of absolute importance in relation to the transport of water and solutes, and assimilation of "fixed air" (carbon dioxide), respectively. The early chemistry introduced by Lavoisier benefited the first physiologists Senebier and De Saussure to reject the "theory of humus", which imposed the soil as the unique source of

Matrix solid-phase dispersion, combined with online SPE-LC-MS/MS, for the determination of tetracyclines and their main transformation products in sludge and agricultural soils.

BACKGROUND: Tetracyclines are frequently detected in the environment due to their persistence and extensive use as antibiotics in human and veterinary medicine. They can accumulate in sludge and in agricultural soils fertilised with treated sludge or manure. This behaviour may lead to ecological risk, propagation of antibiotic resistance and can affect crops and human health through the consumption of vegetables and fruits. Analytical methods for the determination of tetracyclines and their transformation products (TPs) in sludge and agricultural soils are scarce, include a small number of tet

Loss of trace elements from agricultural soil.

Soil erosion is a world-wide issue driven by land management and climate change. Research has focussed on soil loss rates from agricultural land. However, the loss of trace elements essential for soil and plant health, or potentially toxic elements that occur as impurities in fertilisers and manures, is poorly understood. This study reports on the loads and forms of copper, cadmium, manganese, nickel, selenium and zinc lost from three types of agricultural systems at Rothamsted Research's North Wyke Farm Platform over five individual storm events. Loads reflected a combination of concentration

Humic substances sorption from wastewater on the biochar produced from the waste materials.

In recent years, increasing attention has been paid to the possibility of converting waste materials, e.g. manure, bio-waste, green waste, waste from the water and sewage industries (e.g. post-fermentation sludge), and agri-food waste into biochars (BCs) by pyrolysis. The ability of biochar to improve soil health and fertility is driving growing interest in its use as a soil amendment. A high soil stability of BCs and their excellent nutrient sorption properties are the main reasons for the superiority of such materials over other organic soil amendments. In addition, BCs can retain soil-relev

The adsorption of arsenate and p-arsanilic acid onto ferrihydrite and subsequent desorption by sulfate and artificial seawater: Future implications of sea level rise.

Sea level rise (SLR) is estimated to impact 25% of the world's population along coastal areas leading to an increase in saltwater intrusion. Consequently, changes in the soil biogeochemistry of currently non-saline and/or well-drained soils due to saltwater intrusion are of major concern. Saltwater intrusion is expected to affect farmland across large broiler producer regions, where large amounts of manure containing organic arsenicals were applied over the past decades. To determine how SLR may impact the speciation and mobility of adsorbed inorganic and organic As, we used in situ real-time

Assessment microbial risks for the presence of Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia spp. based on the surveillance of the water supply systems in Colombia, 2014-2018.

Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia spp. cause gastrointestinal diseases of zoonotic origin as well transmitted from person to person, being various reported outbreaks associated with water. The infecting (oo)cyst forms of these parasites are highly resistant to water treatments such as chlorine disinfection and fast filtration. The objective of this study was to assess the microbial risk of infection and symptomatic illness by the ingestion of Giardia spp. and Cryptosporidium spp. in water for human consumption in Colombia, based on the results of water quality surveillance. The detection method

Horizontal Spread of Rhodococcus equi Macrolide Resistance Plasmid pRErm46 across Environmental Actinobacteria.

Conjugation is one of the main mechanisms involved in the spread and maintenance of antibiotic resistance in bacterial populations. We recently showed that the emerging macrolide resistance in the soilborne equine and zoonotic pathogen Rhodococcus equi is conferred by the erm(46) gene carried on the 87-kb conjugative plasmid pRErm46. Here, we investigated the conjugal transferability of pRErm46 to 14 representative bacteria likely encountered by R. equi in the environmental habitat. In vitro mating experiments demonstrated conjugation to different members of the genus Rhodococcus as well as to
