Revisiting the History of Odontoma, with Special Reference to Its Original Illustration.

BACKGROUND: Practically every facet of the most common odontogenic tumor, odontoma, has been covered by an extensive volume of literature. However, uncertainty about its precise history has persisted. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The historical evolution of odontoma was traced with reference to the original illustrations that accompanied European and American reports published at the beginning of the 19th century and also at the turn of the century. RESULTS: The prevailing views regarding the first description of odontoma by Oudet of Paris in 1809 and the original designation "odontome" by Broca o

Etiologic factors for buccal and palatal maxillary canine impaction: a perspective based on cone-beam computed tomography analyses.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this research was to identify the etiologic factors associated with palatally impacted canines and buccally impacted canines in a Chinese population by using the cone-beam computed tomography technique. METHODS: Pretreatment cone-beam computed tomography scans of 170 Chinese subjects with impacted maxillary canines and 170 age- and sex-matched subjects without impaction were used. Impacted canine subjects were divided into 2 groups: those with palatally impacted canines and those with buccally impacted canines. One rater analyzed the cone-beam computed tomography data

[Periapical surgery with histologic examination of the periapical lesion. A case report].

Periapical surgery is required when periradicular pathosis associated with endodontically treated teeth cannot be resolved by nonsurgical root canal therapy (retreatment), or when retreatment was unsuccessful, not feasible or contraindicated. Endodontic failures can occur when irritants remain within the confines of the root canal, or when an extraradicular infection cannot be eradicated by orthograde root canal treatment. Foreign-body reponses towards filling materials, towards cholesterol crystals or radicular cysts might prevent complete periapical healing. Following enhanced microsurgical

Alternative anesthetic technique for maxillary periodontal surgery.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary periodontal surgery typically requires multiple injections and may inadvertently affect facial structures such as the upper lip, lateral aspect of the nose, and lower eyelid. To minimize these sequelae and reduce the number of total injections, a relatively new injection technique has been proposed for maxillary procedures. The anterior middle superior alveolar (AMSA) injection is reported to effectively anesthetize maxillary teeth and associated gingival tissues extending from the buccal root of the first molar mesially to the central incisor with a single injection whil

Permanent Canine Impaction: A Systematic Review of Incidence, Distribution, and Etiology.

Background and Objectives: Tooth impaction is a common developmental dental anomaly characterized by the failure of eruption within the expected physiological timeframe. Permanent canines represent the second most frequently impacted teeth after third molars and may lead to functional, esthetic, and orthodontic complications. This systematic review aimed to synthesize current evidence regarding the incidence, anatomical distribution, etiological determinants, and diagnostic evaluation of permanent canine impaction. Materials and Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed,

A genome wide linkage scan for cleft lip and palate and dental anomalies.

We revisited 46 families with two or more siblings affected with an orofacial cleft that participated in previous genome wide studies and collected complete dental information. Genotypes from 392 microsatellite markers at 10 cM intervals were reanalyzed. We carried out four sets of genome wide analyses. First, we ran the analysis solely on the cleft status. Second, we assigned to any dental anomaly (tooth agenesis, supernumerary teeth, and microdontia) an affection status, and repeated the analysis. Third, we ran only the 19 families where the proband had a cleft with no dental anomalies. Fina

Early orthodontic treatment: a new index to assess the risk of malocclusion in primary dentition.

AIM: A new index targeted on the risk of malocclusions in primary dentition, called Baby-ROMA (Risk Of Malocclusion Assessment) index, was set up to assess risks/benefits in early orthodontic therapies. The Baby-ROMA index was designed from the observation that some of the malocclusion signs, observed in primary dentition, can worsen with growth, others remain the same over time and others can even improve. Therefore it would be important to classify the malocclusions observed at an early stage on a risk- based scale. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The reliability of the index was tested on 200 child

Epigenetic influences may explain dental differences in monozygotic twin pairs.

BACKGROUND: Comparisons between monozygotic (MZ) co-twins have tended to focus on the similarities between their dentitions rather than differences. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of discordant expression for simple hypodontia and supernumerary teeth in MZ twin pairs and to explain how phenotypic differences might occur despite their similar genotypes. METHODS: Records of 278 pairs of MZ twins, including dental casts and radiographs, were examined and the prevalences of discordant expression for missing upper lateral incisors (ULI) or second premolars (PM2), and of mesi

[Pierre Marie-Sainton cleidocranial dysplasia].

The paper presents a family with hereditary transmitted Marie-Sainton dysplasia affecting the father and his both children. This is a rare syndrome presenting an autosomal pattern of inheritance, characterized by a generalized defect in both membranous and endochondral bone formation resulting in clavicular aplasia, delayed ossification of the fontanelles and the sutures of the skull and prolonged retention of deciduous dentition with delayed eruption of the permanent teeth. The diagnosis is suggested by more or less complete clinical picture and confirmed by multiple radiological explorations

Application of the dental aesthetic index in the prioritisation of orthodontic service needs.

OBJECTIVE: The provision of orthodontic treatment to patients in government funded training institutions is a major challenge due to constrained budget and resource allocation. The Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) has been used to estimate orthodontic treatment need and as a screening tool to determine treatment priority. The DAI focuses on aesthetics and therefore omits other malocclusion traits that might require orthodontic treatment. The aim of the study was to compare the application of the DAI with the influence other malocclusion traits not included in the DAI might have on the determinatio

A unique phenotype in a patient with a rare triplication of the 22q11.2 region and new clinical insights of the 22q11.2 microduplication syndrome: a report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: The rearrangements of the 22q11.2 chromosomal region, most frequently deletions and duplications, have been known to be responsible for multiple congenital anomaly disorders. These rearrangements are implicated in syndromes that have some phenotypic resemblances. While the 22q11.2 deletion, also known as DiGeorge/Velocardiofacial syndrome, has common features that include cardiac abnormalities, thymic hypoplasia, characteristic face, hypocalcemia, cognitive delay, palatal defects, velopharyngeal insufficiency, and other malformations, the microduplication syndrome is largely undete

[Etiological study of relationship between impacted permanent teeth and malocclusion].

This investigation was undertaken to determine the causes of impacted permanent teeth and whether they have any influence on dentition, occlusion and skeletal patterns. The materials used were dental X-rays, occlusal dental X-rays, panoramic radiograms and cephalograms and dental casts of 194 cases (51 males and 143 females) which revealed impacted permanent teeth among 3979 cases (1215 males and 2764 females) from 1964 to 1985 in the Department of Orthodontics, School of Dentistry, Aichi-Gakuin University. The results obtained were as follows: 1. The incidence of impacted permanent teeth in t

Oral and Dental Examination Findings in European Polecats (Mustela putorius).

Dental and oral diseases in the domestic ferret have been reported, but comparison with their closest wild relative, the European polecat (Mustela putorius), is lacking. Dental and orofacial pathology was evaluated by means of visual examination and dental radiographical analysis of 234 museum skulls. Most of these (70.5%) originated from Austria and the remainder came from seven other European countries. Linguoverted mandibular second incisor teeth were noted in 77% of the skulls. There were 7,268 (91.4% of all potential) teeth available for examination. Few (0.3%) were presumed congenitally
