Comparing mental health semi-structured diagnostic interviews and symptom checklists to predict poor life outcomes: an 8-year cohort study from childhood to young adulthood in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Semi-structured diagnostic interviews and symptom checklists present similar internal reliability. We aim to investigate whether they differ in predicting poor life outcomes in the transition from childhood to young adulthood. METHODS: For this longitudinal study, we used data from the Brazilian High Risk Cohort Study for Childhood Mental Health Conditions. Eligible participants were aged 6-14 years on the day of study enrolment (January to February, 2010) and were enrolled in public schools by a biological parent in Porto Alegre and São Paulo, Brazil. 2511 young people and their

[Absolute driving incapacity at 1.0 promille--an erroneous limit].

Following a well known decision of the Bundesgerichtshof (BGH, German Federal Court) a driver with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of more than 0.13% is seen as "absolutely unfit for driving" and will be prosecuted by criminal law. This decision was based on the results of a comprehensive review of the literature about the effects of alcohol done 1966 by the Bundesgesundheitsamt (BGA, National Bureau of Health). There, severe impairments were described at levels above 0.1%, a value which the BGH "rounded up" to 0.11%. The possible errors of measurement were estimated as 0.02%. Adding both

Hydrocarbon toxicity: A review.

CONTEXT: Clinical effects of hydrocarbon exposure have been reported since 1897. These substances are ubiquitous, and their exposures are common. The specific hydrocarbon and route of exposure will determine the clinical effect, and an understanding of this is helpful in the care of the hydrocarbon-exposed patient. OBJECTIVE: To complete a comprehensive review of the literature on hydrocarbon toxicity and summarize the findings. METHODS: Relevant literature was identified through searches of Medline (PubMed/OVID) and Cochrane Library databases (inclusive of years 1975-2013), as well as from

The pathological gambler as criminal offender. Comments on evaluation and treatment.

Over the past three decades, gambling has been the nation's fastest growing industry. Although there is now some leveling off, states are still turning to legalized gambling to address financial problems without having to raise taxes. In addition, there is new technology that produces more rapidly addicting games. States are accepting some responsibility and, as of this writing, 12 of them have funded some programs in public education, research, training, and treatment. Although there are only a half dozen inpatient programs and very few qualified counselors and therapists, we can anticipate t

Justice system experiences and health risks among Medicaid and uninsured populations receiving treatment for substance use disorder.

INTRODUCTION: We explored the relationship between justice system experiences and health risks using a sample of Medicaid and uninsured patients in addiction treatment, focusing on four health behaviors correlated with premature mortality: (1) opioid misuse, (2) overdose, (3) multi-substance use, (4) recurrent treatment admissions. METHODS: From 2021 to 2023, electronic in-depth life-course history surveys were administered in-person with adult patients selected from a community-based public health case management system while undergoing addiction treatment in Michigan, USA. This study utiliz

Fentanyl harm reduction strategies among Latinx communities in the United States: a scoping review.

PURPOSE: Fueled by the prescription opioid overdose crisis and increased influx of illicitly manufactured fentanyl, fentanyl overdoses continue to be a public health crisis that has cost the US economy over $1 trillion in reduced productivity, health care, family assistance, criminal justice, and accounted for over 74,000 deaths in 2023. A recent demographic shift in the opioid crisis has led to a rise in overdose deaths among the Latinx population. Harm reduction interventions, including the use of naloxone and fentanyl test strips, have been shown to be effective measures at reducing the num

Profiles of quality of outpatient care use, associated sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, and adverse outcomes among patients with substance-related disorders.

BACKGROUND: This study identified patient profiles in terms of their quality of outpatient care use, associated sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, and adverse outcomes based on frequent emergency department (ED) use, hospitalization, and death from medical causes. METHODS: A cohort of 18,215 patients with substance-related disorders (SRD) recruited in addiction treatment centers was investigated using Quebec (Canada) health administrative databases. A latent class analysis was produced, identifying three profiles of quality of outpatient care use, while multinomial and logistic re

Rumination mediates associations between microaggressions and sleep quality in Black Americans: the toll of racial microstressors.

Disparities in health outcomes between Black and White Americans are well-documented, including sleep quality, and disparities in sleep may lead to disparities in health over the life course. A meta-model indicates that cognitive processes may underly the connection between race and poor sleep quality, and ultimately, health disparities. That is, there are race-specific stressors that disproportionately affect Black Americans, which are associated with poor health through biological, cognitive, and behavioral mechanisms (e.g., sleep). Among these race-specific stressors is discrimination, whic

Perspectives on HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) utilization and related intervention needs among people who inject drugs.

BACKGROUND: Antiretroviral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is clinically efficacious and recommended for HIV prevention among people who inject drugs (PWID), but uptake remains low and intervention needs are understudied. To inform the development of PrEP interventions for PWID, we conducted a qualitative study in the Northeastern USA, a region where recent clusters of new HIV infections have been attributed to injection drug use. METHODS: We conducted qualitative interviews with 33 HIV-uninfected PWID (hereafter, "participants") and 12 clinical and social service providers (professional "key

Problem coping skills, psychosocial adversities and mental health problems in children and adolescents as predictors of criminal outcomes in young adulthood.

The purpose of this study was to test child and adolescent psychosocial and psychopathological risk factors as predictors of adult criminal outcomes in a Swiss community sample. In particular, the role of active and avoidant problem coping in youths was analysed. Prevalence rates of young adult crime convictions based on register data were calculated. Univariate and multivariate logistic regressions were used to analyse the prediction of adult criminal convictions 15 years after assessment in a large Swiss community sample of children and adolescents (n = 1,086). Risk factors assessed in child

Synthetic cannabinoid use among a sample of individuals enrolled in community-based recovery programs: Are synthetic cannabinoids actually preferred to other drugs?

Background: Over the past decade, availability and use of novel psychoactive substances such as synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRA) have proliferated globally. However, the prevalence of SCRAs use remains uncertain, as does the degree to which individuals reporting SCRA use prefer SCRA to other drugs. Methods: In April 2017, a total of 500 anonymous surveys were completed by clients enrolled in a residential drug recovery program. Chi-square and t tests were used to examine significant differences between those who had ever used SCRA and those who had not. Logistic regression analys

Harm reduction for drug abusing ex-offenders: outcome of the California prevention and education project MORE project.

MORE was a mobile outreach drug abuse prevention and HIV harm reduction program primarily for ex-offenders who are active drug users. Through case management, clients were provided substance abuse education, counseling, and referral. Long term goals of these services were to reduce their drug use and re-incarceration for drug related crimes. From January 2002 to May 2006, 487 unduplicated clients were recruited in year long cohorts and offered services. The program evaluation tool was the Federal Office of Budget and Management Government Performance and Results Act questionnaire. Government P

[The role of shame in development of the mental disorders II. Measurement of shame and relationship].

Our review is an overview of research literature aimed at evaluating the differential association of shame with various mental disorders. In the first part of this review, we present questionnaire and experimental methods applied in clinical trials for measuring shame. In the second part of our review, we review research that investigated the association between shame, and shame induced behavioral and emotional reactions, as well as the following mental disorders: anxiety disorders (social phobia, PTSD, agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobias, OCD), mood disorders (unipolar

Intersections of Substance Use, Overdose Risk, and Intimate Partner Violence: A Dyadic Approach to Violence Prevention in Criminal Legal Settings.

BACKGROUND: When examining the relationship between intimate partner violence (IPV) and substance use, most studies have focused exclusively on individual-level correlates without considering cross-partner associations. Given the bidirectional nature of IPV within intimate relationships, a dyadic (couple) approach may assist in gaining a more precise understanding of the complex interrelationships between IPV, substance use, and overdose risks among couples. METHODS: We employed the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM) using baseline data from a randomized controlled trial to examine ho

"Sharing is my only option": an ethnographic analysis of the underlying contexts of needle and syringe sharing among people who inject drugs using the socio-ecological framework.

BACKGROUND: People who inject drugs (PWID) in Bangladesh are part of a long-standing needle syringe program, which faced challenges in containing the spread of HIV, thus warranting exploration of the drivers of needle and syringe sharing. This article aimed to explore the underlying reasons for needle and syringe sharing among PWID through ethnographic lenses in Dhaka. METHODS: We adopted peer-driven Participatory Ethnographic and Evaluation Research, entailing 6,000 h of observations at service delivery points and drug-injecting spots, 66 in-depth interviews and seven focus groups with PWID

Drug abuse's smallest victims: in utero drug exposure.

The social and economic impact of drug use on our global population continues to increase leaving no geographical, social or cultural group untouched. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), in one of the few large surveys of maternal abuse, found that 5.5% of mothers reported taking an illicit substance during gestation. These figures certainly are underestimates due to the stigma of drug use during pregnancy and the accompanying legal, ethical and economic issues. Although drugs of choice and routes of administration vary by country, exposure of our most valuable resource, our children,

Evaluating Acceptance and Use of Digital Health Platforms for Consultation and Medication Delivery Among Men Who Have Sex With Men and Transgender People Living With HIV: Cross-Sectional Survey Informed by an Extended UTAUT Approach.

BACKGROUND: Digital health platforms can expand access to HIV care, but among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender people living with HIV and AIDS in Nigeria, adoption is shaped by structural stigma, criminalization, and fear of disclosure as much as by system functionality. Teleconsultation and medication-delivery platforms offer alternative pathways to care, but their acceptance within marginalized populations cannot be assumed and requires empirical investigation. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the factors influencing behavioral intention (BI) to adopt TechAids, a confid

The Challenges of Transition From Donor-Funded Programs: Results From a Theory-Driven Multi-Country Comparative Case Study of Programs in Eastern Europe and Central Asia Supported by the Global Fund.

INTRODUCTION: In the era of declining development assistance for health, transitioning externally funded programs to governments becomes a priority for donors. However, the process requires a careful approach not only to preserve the public health gains that have already been achieved but also to expand on them. In the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region, countries are expected to graduate from support from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in or before 2025. We aim to describe transition risks and identify possible means to address them. METHODS: Using a theory-based

Family-Centered Care in Juvenile Justice Institutions: A Mixed Methods Study Protocol.

BACKGROUND: Treatment and rehabilitation interventions in juvenile justice institutions aim to prevent criminal reoffending by adolescents and to enhance their prospects of successful social reintegration. There is evidence that these goals are best achieved when the institution adopts a family-centered approach, involving the parents of the adolescents. The Academic Workplace Forensic Care for Youth has developed two programs for family-centered care for youth detained in groups for short-term and long-term stay, respectively. OBJECTIVE: The overall aim of our study is to evaluate the family
