Cryptosporidium parasites are leading causes of enteric disease, especially in children. A prospective survey on the prevalence of cryptosporidiosis in children less than five years of age was undertaken at six microbiology laboratories in Kenya on fecal samples submitted for routine parasite and ova investigations. Analysis of 4,899 samples over a two-year study period showed an overall prevalence of cryptosporidiosis of 4% that was highest between November to February. Investigations on the nature of enteric diseases prompting ova and cyst examination requests showed 66.4% had acute diarrhea

BACKGROUND: Low skin reactivity to common inhalant allergens is frequently found in asymptomatic individuals as well as in patients with respiratory complaints. However, most studies on bronchial allergen challenge concern patients with high levels of allergic sensitization. The present study was directed to bronchial reactions after allergen challenge in subjects with low skin reactivity to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus or cat dander.
METHODS: Titrated intracutaneous skin tests, skin prick tests, specific IgE assays, histamine release on washed leukocytes, and bronchial histamine and allerg

Helicobacter species infections may be associated with the development of gastric disorders, such as gastritis, peptic ulcers, intestinal metaplasia, dysplasia and gastric carcinoma. Binding of these bacteria to the gastric mucosa occurs through the recognition of specific glycan receptors expressed by the host epithelial cells. This review addresses the state of the art knowledge on these host glycan structures and the bacterial adhesins involved in Helicobacter spp. adhesion to gastric mucosa colonization. Glycans are expressed on every cell surface and they are crucial for several biologica

Examination of round sardinella Sardinella aurita Valenciennes, 1847 (Clupeidae) from the Gulf of Tunis (Tunisia) revealed the first local and Mediterranean record of Anthobothrium sp. 1 sensu Jensen & Bullard, 2010 (Tetraphyllidea incertae sedis, Anthobothrium). Nodular lesions containing multiple larvae were detected at the proximal end of the pyloric caeca, and free plerocercoids were observed in the intestinal lumen and stomach. The newly generated LSU rDNA sequences shared 100% nucleotide identity with adult Anthobothrium sp. 1B from the blacktip shark Carcharhinus limbatus Valenciennes,

Crocuta crocuta, the spotted hyena, is unusual among the four remaining hyena species for its adaptation to hunting in preference to scavenging. Individual hyenas alternate between highly social life in matriarchal clans and solo hunting. Until 2020, the molecular biology of this species was hindered by the lack of genome data, but within three years, three draft genomes had been advanced for this species (2020-Yang, 2022-Shao, and 2023-DNA Zoo). This project generated both RNA-Seq (NCBI PRJNA658551) and proteomics data for animals from Kruger National Park in South Africa (ProteomeXchange PXD

BACKGROUND: Hookworms (Ancylostomatidae) significantly impact on the health of both domestic animals and humans worldwide, with some species capable of causing zoonotic diseases. While hookworm infections in pets are frequently reported in Europe primarily through coproscopic studies, there are limited data regarding their presence in wild carnivores. To address this, this study aimed to assess the diversity, prevalence, and distribution of hookworms in wild canids and felids from Romania through both morphological and molecular analyses.
METHODS: From November 2011 to February 2025, 319 carc

BACKGROUND: Rickettsia spp. are obligate intracellular bacteria of the spotted fever group (SFG), typhus group (TG) and transitional group, with diverse vectors and significant zoonotic potential. While Rickettsia africae is well documented in South African ticks, the role of wildlife hosts in pathogen maintenance remains unclear.
METHODS: We re-screened 73 spleen samples opportunistically collected from 11 wild mammal species that previously tested negative for Rickettsia by reverse line blot hybridization (RLB). The samples were collected from Kruger National Park, Timbavati Private Nature

Cryptosporidium is a globally distributed protozoan parasite and a major cause of diarrheal disease, particularly among immunocompromised individuals. Despite its growing recognition as an important zoonotic pathogen, large-scale epidemiological data specific to the Chinese population remain scarce. We systematically retrieved articles on the occurrence of Cryptosporidium in humans in China through searches of PubMed, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Data, and VIP Chinese Journal Database, with the literature search current through May 15, 2025,

INTRODUCTION: Acute febrile illnesses (AFI) in developing tropical and sub-tropical nations are challenging to diagnose due to the numerous causes and non-specific symptoms. The proliferation of rapid diagnostic testing and successful control campaigns against malaria have revealed that non-Plasmodium pathogens still contribute significantly to AFI burden. Thus, a more complete understanding of local trends and potential causes is important for selecting the correct treatment course, which in turn will reduce morbidity and mortality. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) in a laboratory setting can

BACKGROUND: Babesiosis is a tick-borne infection caused by piroplasmid protozoa and associated with anemia and severe disease in humans, domestic animals and wildlife. Domestic cats are infected by at least six Babesia spp. that cause clinical disease.
METHODS: Infection with a piroplasmid species was detected by microscopy of stained blood smears in three sick cats from Israel. Genetic characterization of the piroplasmid was performed by PCR amplification of the 18S rRNA, cytochorme B (CytB) and heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) genes and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) locus, DNA sequenci

In Thailand, leptospirosis is considered an emerging disease in humans and animals. Many species can shed pathogenic Leptospira, including domestic cats (felis catus), which might be able to pose a risk to humans. There are no studies on Leptospira infections in cats in Thailand, but in other countries, it was demonstrated that cats can shed pathogenic Leptospira with high prevalences. The aims of this study were to evaluate whether outdoor cats in Thailand shed pathogenic Leptospira in their urine, and to determine antibody prevalence and risk factors associated with Leptospira infection. Two

Cats can be infected by various intestinal parasites, some that are zoonotic. Although surveys of parasite prevalence in owned and shelter cats have been published, none addressed free-roaming, wild-trapped, domestic cat (Felis catus) populations. An opportunity to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites in wild-trapped, free-roaming cats in northcentral Oklahoma, United States occurred through a trap-neuter-return (TNR) program conducted at Oklahoma State University, Boren Veterinary Medical Hospital, between February 2015 and April 2016. Approximately 1 g to 5 g of feces was collect

BACKGROUND: Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) naturally infects multiple species of cat and is related to human immunodeficiency virus in humans. FIV infection causes AIDS-like disease and mortality in the domestic cat (Felis catus) and serves as a natural model for HIV infection in humans. In African lions (Panthera leo) and other exotic felid species, disease etiology introduced by FIV infection are less clear, but recent studies indicate that FIV causes moderate to severe CD4 depletion.
RESULTS: In this study, comparative genomic methods are used to evaluate the full proviral genome of t

Ectoparasites can cause important skin disorders in animals and can also transmit pathogens. The Iberian lynx Lynx pardinus has been stated to be the most endangered felid in the world and such vector-borne pathogens may threaten its survival. We surveyed 98 wild carnivores (26 Iberian lynxes, 34 red foxes Vulpes vulpes, 24 Egyptian mongooses Herpestes ichneumon, 11 common genets Genetta genetta, two Eurasian badgers Meles meles, one polecat Mustela putorius) and 75 domestic but free-ranging carnivores (46 cats Felis catus, 29 dogs Canis familiaris) from June 2004 to June 2006 in the two areas

Sperm transfer through the epididymis, a prerequisite for insemination of cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis (Bouché) was stimulated by exposure of unfed male fleas to juvenile hormone III residues for 3 d at 25 degrees C or exposure of unfed fleas to 37 degrees C for 6 d. Sperm transfer was completed at least three times faster in unfed males held at 37 degrees C than in those held at 25 degrees C. Although percentage sperm transfer in fleas fed water or 0.15 M saline at 37 degrees C was not significantly increased over that of unfed fleas, a significantly greater percentage of blood-fed males

The current taxonomic classification of Chlamydia is based on limited phenotypic, morphologic and genetic criteria. This classification does not take into account recent analysis of the ribosomal operon or recently identified obligately intracellular organisms that have a chlamydia-like developmental cycle of replication. Neither does it provide a systematic rationale for identifying new strains. In this study, phylogenetic analyses of the 16S and 23S rRNA genes are presented with corroborating genetic and phenotypic information to show that the order Chlamydiales contains at least four distin

Helicobacter pylori causes a lifelong infection and provides a model of bacterial adaptation and persistent colonization. Adenosine is an anti-inflammatory mediator that limits tissue damage during inflammation. We studied the role of adenosine in the T-cell-mediated regulation of gastritis and bacterial persistence. After 4 h of activation, human T helper (Th) cells increased A(2A) adenosine receptor (A(2A)AR) mRNA level (sevenfold). A(2A)AR was the predominant subtype expressed in resting and stimulated gastric or peripheral Th cells. Stimulation with ATL313, an A(2A)AR agonist, increased cy

Chronic inflammation in the stomach induces metaplasia, the pre-cancerous lesion that precedes inflammation-driven neoplastic transformation. While Hedgehog signaling contributes to the initiation of some cancers, its role in gastric transformation remains poorly defined. We found that Helicobacter-infected C57BL/6 mice develop extensive mucous cell metaplasia at 6 month but not at 2 months post-infection. Gastric metaplasia coincided with the appearance of CD45(+)MHCII(+)CD11b(+)CD11c(+) myeloid cells that were normally not present in the chronic gastritis at 2 months. The myeloid regulatory

Watersheds that supply residents with drinking water have the potential for contamination with Cryptosporidium oocysts. To evaluate any potential similarities between Cryptosporidium species previously found in the New York City (NYC) watershed and those causing disease in NYC, the species were identified in stool specimens from residents with cryptosporidiosis. Genetic analysis was performed on 628 positive stool samples collected from NYC residents between 2015 and 2018 to determine the species present. A total of 547 samples yielded positive results by real-time PCR. Of these samples, 512 (

Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is a zoonotic intracellular protozoan parasite that can invade, replicate and survive in almost all cells of warm-blooded animals. T. gondii infection threatens the life of the fetus or can cause morbidity in the infant. As the only definitive host of T. gondii, felids spread the pathogen mainly by forming oocysts in the small intestines and discharging the oocysts into the ambient environment, consequently polluting water, vegetables, and meat products. In this study, we used untargeted metabolomics technology to study the changes in metabolites that occurred dur
