An updated review of environmental estrogen and androgen mimics and antagonists.

For the last 40 y, substantial evidence has surfaced on the hormone-like effects of environmental chemicals such as pesticides and industrial chemicals in wildlife and humans. The endocrine and reproductive effects of these chemicals are believed to be due to their ability to: (1) mimic the effect of endogenous hormones, (2) antagonize the effect of endogenous hormones, (3) disrupt the synthesis and metabolism of endogenous hormones, and (4) disrupt the synthesis and metabolism of hormone receptors. The discovery of hormone-like activity of these chemicals occurred long after they were release

Prostate-specific antigen screening among transgender women in clinical care: A retrospective chart review study.

BACKGROUND: Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening is controversial due to over-detection and treatment of low-grade prostate cancer. Consequently, the Canadian Urological Association (CUA) and the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care (CTFPHC) differ with respect to recommending for versus recommending against PSA screening. Regardless, Canadian and global guidelines recommending PSA screening fail to address transgender (trans) women/transfeminine persons, though studies suggest this population remains at risk of prostate cancer, particularly those who have not accessed gender-aff

The phytoestrogen genistein improves hippocampal neurogenesis and cognitive impairment and decreases neuroinflammation in an animal model of metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome (MS) is the medical term for the combination of at least three of the following factors: obesity, hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, and hypertension. The spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) is an accepted animal model for the study of human MS that reveals all the features of the syndrome when fed high-fat, high-carbohydrate diets. The intake of high-fat diets in rats has been shown to produce brain neuropathology. In humans, MS increases the risk of cognitive impairment, dementia, and Alzheimer's disease. Genistein (GEN) is a phytoestrogen found in soy tha

Growth and reproductive development of male piglets are more vulnerable to midgestation maternal stress than that of female piglets.

In many mammalian species, prenatal stress masculinizes female and feminizes male offspring impairing their reproductive capacity. Regrouping gestating sows is a common, stressful production practice, but its impact on the developing pigs of the sow is not fully known. This study examined the effects of regrouping gestating sows and the administration of exogenous glucocorticoids on the growth and external reproductive morphology of pigs. At 37.2 ± 0.26 d of gestation, 6 cohorts of 18 sows (N = 108) were placed in 1 of 3 treatments: socially stable (Stable), hydrocortisone acetate (HCA), or mi

Androgen-mediated development in male rat offspring exposed to flutamide in utero: permanence and correlation of early postnatal changes in anogenital distance and nipple retention with malformations in androgen-dependent tissues.

Male offspring exposed in utero to antiandrogens often display alterations in androgen-dependent developmental markers (e.g., anogenital distance [AGD], nipple retention) together with clearly adverse responses such as genital malformations and reproductive tract lesions. The objectives of this study were to determine whether in utero exposure to flutamide results in permanent changes in male AGD and nipple retention, characterize the dose-response relationship between flutamide-mediated alterations in these landmarks and clearly adverse antiandrogenic effects, and establish the predictive val

'We've fallen into the cracks': Aboriginal women's experiences with breast cancer through photovoice.

Despite some recognition that Aboriginal women who have experienced breast cancer may have unique health needs, little research has documented the experiences of Aboriginal women from their perspective. Our main objective was to explore and to begin to make visible Aboriginal women's experiences with breast cancer using the qualitative research technique, photovoice. The research was based in Saskatchewan, Canada and participants were Aboriginal women who had completed breast cancer treatment. Although Aboriginal women cannot be viewed as a homogeneous group, participants indicated two areas o

Clinical outcomes of radiation therapy for transgender and gender-expansive people with cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Approximately 1.6 million people in the US identify as transgender, many of whom undergo gender-affirming medical or surgical therapies. While transgender individuals are diagnosed with cancer at similar rates as those who are cisgender, the impacts of radiation therapy on outcomes of gender-affirming care in transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expansive people with cancer are understudied. We report on the experiences and outcomes of transgender and gender-expansive patients receiving radiation therapy for cancer treatment. METHODS: This study is a multi-institutional retrospect

Breast cancer prevention with older women: a gender-focused intervention study.

Breast cancer continues to be the most frequently diagnosed cancer in American women, with older women at highest risk (American Cancer Society [ACS], 2007). In this study, the researcher explored whether an educational intervention using feminist pedagogical methods would affect the use of breast cancer screening methods (mammography and breast self-exam) by older women. At 6-month follow-up, those women receiving the education intervention were found to have significantly increased their use of screening methods in comparison with a control group of women of similar age from the same communi

Combined spinal/caudal catheter anesthesia: extending the boundaries of regional anesthesia for complex pediatric urological surgery.

BACKGROUND: Spinal anesthesia (SA) is an established anesthetic technique for short outpatient pediatric urological cases. To avoid general anesthesia (GA) and expand regional anesthetics to longer and more complex pediatric surgeries, the authors began a program using a combined spinal/caudal catheter (SCC) technique. STUDY DESIGN: The authors retrospectively reviewed the charts of all patients scheduled for surgery under SCC between December 2016 and April 2018 and recorded age, gender, diagnosis, procedure, conversion to GA/airway intervention, operative time, neuraxial and intravenous med

Health effects of endocrine-disrupting chemicals on wildlife, with special reference to the European situation.

Many wildlife species may be exposed to biologically active concentrations of endocrine-disrupting chemicals. There is strong evidence obtained from laboratory studies showing the potential of several environmental chemicals to cause endocrine disruption at environmentally realistic exposure levels. In wildlife populations, associations have been reported between reproductive and developmental effects and endocrine-disrupting chemicals. In the aquatic environment, effects have been observed in mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, and mollusks from Europe, North America, and other areas. The observe

Hypogonadal hypertension in male Sprague-Dawley rats is renin-angiotensin system-dependent: role of endogenous androgens.

BACKGROUND: Acutely, testosterone (TES) and other androgens are efficacious vasodilators, both in vitro and in vivo; however, their long-term effects on arterial blood pressure (BP) remain unclear. It was hypothesized that endogenous androgens exert long-term anti-hypertensive effects on systemic BP through a combination of genomic and nongenomic effects to enhance vasodilation of the systemic vasculature. METHODS: The long-term effects of endogenous TES and exogenous TES replacement therapy (TRT) on BP were studied in intact (InT) and castrated (CsX) male Sprague-Dawley (SD) and testicular-f

Sexual Desire Changes in Transgender Individuals Upon Initiation of Hormone Treatment: Results From the Longitudinal European Network for the Investigation of Gender Incongruence.

INTRODUCTION: Several steps in the transitioning process may affect sexual desire in transgender people. This is often underexposed by those providing gender-affirming care. AIM: To prospectively assess sexual desire during the first 3 years of hormonal therapy (HT) in transgender people. METHODS: This prospective cohort study was part of the European Network for the Investigation of Gender Incongruence. At baseline, different psychological questionnaires were administered. Sex steroids were measured at each follow-up visit. Data were analyzed cross-sectionally and prospectively. MAIN OUTCO

Microbicides-emerging essential pillars of comprehensive HIV/AIDS prevention.

A quarter century old and still going strong, the HIV/AIDS pandemic is already the deadliest and longest lasting plague in mankind's recorded history. Reportedly among the weakest of the viruses, HIV's survival instincts have relied on extreme adaptability at the molecular and virologic levels on its part. In addition, it has preyed on certain prevalent weaknesses on the part of its host (human society) - extreme poverty; gender bias; lack of education and high prevalence of STIs- to prolong its lethal grip on humanity for as long as possible. This astounding adaptability is evident by the tre

Women and AIDS: the ethics of exaggerated harm.

This article examines the way in which some biomedical ethicists have constructed sexually transmitted AIDS as a significant threat to women's health. We demonstrate that the familiar claim that 'women are the fastest growing group' -- whether of HIV-infected or of AIDS patients -- is misleading because it obscures the distinction between proportional rate of growth and absolute increase. Feminist ethicists have suggested that misogyny of a male dominated health care system has led to underreporting of women AIDS cases in order to support these feminists' claim of AIDS being a real threat to w

Gender-Affirming Hormone Therapy: Physical and Sociopsychological Effects, Impact and Satisfaction.

Background Gender dysphoria treatment includes gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT). Studies are still lacking on how to characterize its effects and impact on transgender people's lives more effectively. Aim To study the physical and psychological effects of GAHT on transgender individuals, assess its impact on their lives, and rate their overall satisfaction. Methods Participants (n = 114; ages 18-62 years; median age 24.0 (21.0 - 33.0) years) included transgender adults residing in Portugal who were undergoing or had undergone hormonal therapy for at least one uninterrupted year. [Dissociative disorders: from Janet to DSM-IV].

I reviewed the literature on dissociation and dissociative disorders from Pierre Janet to DSM-IV, and examined the current trends in research. Janet's theory on hysteria is multifaceted, and is based on three psychological models. Based on a hierarchical model, Janet related hysteric symptoms to the activities within the lower strata of mental hierarchy (automatisms psychologiques), which were demonstrably shown in somnambulism. A second model was based on the concept of a psychological system, which was hypothetically composed of ideas, images, feelings, sensations, and movements. According t

Testicular cancer survivors have shorter anogenital distance that is not increased by 1 year of testosterone replacement therapy.

STUDY QUESTION: Is anogenital distance (AGD) shorter in testicular cancer (TC) survivors than in men from the general population, and is AGD affected by testosterone replacement therapy in adulthood? SUMMARY ANSWER: AGD, measured as distance from anus to scrotum (AGDas), is shorter in TC survivors and does not change as a result of testosterone replacement therapy. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Animal studies have shown that AGD is a postnatal 'read-out' of foetal androgen action, and short AGD in male offspring is considered a sign of feminization caused by in utero disruption of the reproductive

Administration of potentially antiandrogenic pesticides (procymidone, linuron, iprodione, chlozolinate, p,p'-DDE, and ketoconazole) and toxic substances (dibutyl- and diethylhexyl phthalate, PCB 169, and ethane dimethane sulphonate) during sexual differentiation produces diverse profiles of reproductive malformations in the male rat.

Antiandrogenic chemicals alter sexual differentiation by a variety of mechanisms, and as a consequence, they induce different profiles of effects. For example, in utero treatment with the androgen receptor (AR) antagonist, flutamide, produces ventral prostate agenesis and testicular nondescent, while in contrast, finasteride, an inhibitor of 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) synthesis, rarely, if ever, induces such malformations. In this regard, it was recently proposed that dibutyl phthalate (DBP) alters reproductive development by a different mechanism of action than flutamide or vinclozolin
