Radionuclide transfer to reptiles.

Reptiles are an important, and often protected, component of many ecosystems but have rarely been fully considered within ecological risk assessments (ERA) due to a paucity of data on contaminant uptake and effects. This paper presents a meta-analysis of literature-derived environmental media (soil and water) to whole-body concentration ratios (CRs) for predicting the transfer of 35 elements (Am, As, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Ce, Cm, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, La, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Po, Pu, Ra, Rb, Sb, Se, Sr, Th, U, V, Y, Zn, Zr) to reptiles in freshwater ecosystems and 15 elements (Am, C, Cs, Cu,

Fipronil: environmental fate, ecotoxicology, and human health concerns.

Fipronil is a highly effective, broad-spectrum insecticide with potential value for the control of a wide range of crop, public hygiene, amenity, and veterinary pests. It can generally be applied at low to very low dose rates to achieve effective pest control. Application rates vary between 0.6 and 200 g a.i./ha, depending on the target pest and formulation. It belongs to the phenyl pyrazole or fiprole group of chemicals and is a potent disrupter of the insect central nervous system via interference with the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA-) regulated chloride channel. Fipronil degrades slowly o

Morphological and molecular characterization of Isospora amphiboluri (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae), a coccidian parasite, in a central netted dragon (Ctenophorus nuchalis) (De Vis, 1884) in Australia.

An Isospora species, Isospora amphiboluri, originally described by Canon in 1967 and later by McAllister et al. (1995), was isolated from a central netted dragon (Ctenophorus nuchalis) housed at a wildlife rehabilitation centre in Perth, Western Australia. Sporulated oocysts of Isospora amphiboluri (n = 30) are spherical, 24.2 (26.5-23.0) μm in length and 23.9 (22.4-25.9) μm in width, with a shape index of 1.01. The bilayered oocyst wall is smooth and light-yellow in color. Polar granule, oocyst residuum and micropyle are absent. The sporocysts are lemon-shaped, 15.7 (15.2-18.0) × 10.2 (8.9-11

Knocking on Heaven's Door: Are Novel Invaders Necessarily Facing Naïve Native Species on Islands?

The impact of alien predator species on insular native biota has often been attributed to island prey naïveté (i.e. lack of, or inefficient, anti-predator behavior). Only rarely, however, has the concept of island prey naïveté been tested, and then only a posteriori (i.e. hundreds or thousands of years after alien species introduction). The presence of native or anciently introduced predators or competitors may be crucial for the recognition and development of adaptive behavior toward unknown predators or competitors of the same archetype (i.e. a set of species that occupy a similar ecological

Amylin-immunoreactivity is co-stored in a serotonin cell subpopulation of the vertebrate stomach and duodenum.

Amylin (or islet amyloid polypeptide) is a 37 amino acid peptide originally isolated from amyloid deposits in the pancreas of non-insulin dependent diabetic patients. It has already been immunohistochemically localised within the B and D cells of pancreatic islets and in endocrine cells of the rat and human stomach and duodenum. In this phylogenetic study, a polyclonal antiserum raised against the carboxy-terminal tridecapeptide amide of human amylin was used to demonstrate and examine the distribution of amylin-immunoreactivity in the stomach and duodenum of various vertebrate species. Multi-Taxa Genome-Environment Associations With Contemporary and Historical Climate in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest.

Multi-taxa genomic data offer valuable opportunities to assess the extent to which co-distributed taxa exhibit parallel responses to shared environmental regimes and climatic history. In this study, we use genome-environment associations (GEA) to examine how present and past climate may have shaped spatial patterns of adaptive genomic variation across 27 taxa in the Atlantic Forest biodiversity hotspot. Our sampling repurposes existing data from a wide array of taxonomic groups, including frogs, lizards, birds, butterflies, flowering plants, and a conifer, spanning multiple bioclimatic domains

The role of social media in public health awareness during times of war in Sudan: snakebites and scorpion stings.

BACKGROUND: Snakebite envenomation (SBE) and scorpion sting envenomation (SSE) are significant neglected tropical diseases that primarily affect impoverished communities in rural areas of developing nations. A lack of understanding about snake and scorpion species and their distribution exacerbates the disabilities and fatalities caused by SBE and SSE. In Sudan, particularly in regions affected by ongoing conflicts where healthcare resources are scarce, social media platforms offer a cost-effective approach to addressing public health challenges. Our aim in this study is to highlight the benef

The occurrence, diversity and blood feeding patterns of potential vectors of dengue and yellow fever in Kacheliba, West Pokot County, Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: Yellow fever (YF) and dengue (DEN) viruses are important re-emerging mosquito-borne viruses sharing similar vectors and reservoirs. The last documented YF outbreak in Kenya occurred in 1992-95. However, YF virus is re-emerging in bordering countries including Uganda, Ethiopia and South Sudan with the potential for spread to the neighboring regions in Kenya. Dengue is endemic in Kenya with outbreaks being detected in various towns in the north and the coast. This study reports on the Aedes (Stegomyia) mosquito species occurrence, diversity, and blood feeding patterns, as means of

Turtle isochore structure is intermediate between amphibians and other amniotes.

Vertebrate genomes are comprised of isochores that are relatively long (>100 kb) regions with a relatively homogenous (either GC-rich or AT-rich) base composition and with rather sharp boundaries with neighboring isochores. Mammals and living archosaurs (birds and crocodilians) have heterogeneous genomes that include very GC-rich isochores. In sharp contrast, the genomes of amphibians and fishes are more homogeneous and they have a lower overall GC content. Because DNA with higher GC content is more thermostable, the elevated GC content of mammalian and archosaurian DNA has been hypothesized t

Pediatric sexology and hermaphroditism.

Lacking an empirically based theory of erotosexual development and health in childhood, pediatrics too easily falls back on reductionistic hypotheses of the nature versus nurture type. A new, three-term paradigm, namely, nature/critical-period/nurture, is needed to explain, for example, the phenomenology of hermaphroditism, and the differentiation of gender-identity/role (G-I/R) in individual cases. In 30 young women with a history of the early-treated, 46,XX congenital virilizing adrenal hyperplasia (CVAH) syndrome, 37% (N = 11) had a history of bisexual imagery or practice, as compared with

Sequencing of Pax6 loci from the elephant shark reveals a family of Pax6 genes in vertebrate genomes, forged by ancient duplications and divergences.

Pax6 is a developmental control gene essential for eye development throughout the animal kingdom. In addition, Pax6 plays key roles in other parts of the CNS, olfactory system, and pancreas. In mammals a single Pax6 gene encoding multiple isoforms delivers these pleiotropic functions. Here we provide evidence that the genomes of many other vertebrate species contain multiple Pax6 loci. We sequenced Pax6-containing BACs from the cartilaginous elephant shark (Callorhinchus milii) and found two distinct Pax6 loci. Pax6.1 is highly similar to mammalian Pax6, while Pax6.2 encodes a paired-less Pax6

Ionic environment of cochlear hair cells.

The scala media of the adult cochlea in mammals comprises a morphologically closed compartment sealed with tight junctions of the intermediate to tight types. The unique ionic composition of endolymph is maintained by the stria vascularis through active reabsorption of sodium and active secretion of potassium against ionic gradients. The subtectorial space is only a partially closed compartment which communicates with the endolymph via holes in the tectorial membrane at its outer insertion to the organ of Corti. Hardesty's membrane divides the subtectorial space into two compartments: one faci

Continuous in silico screening of fish, amphibians, reptiles, and birds expands the diversity of bornavirids and reveals unexpected genomic architectures.

Using an in silico data mining approach, we previously expanded the known diversity within the family Bornaviridae by identifying novel bornavirids in publicly available sequence datasets from bony and cartilaginous fish. Building on this discovery, we systematically screened numerous additional sequence datasets from fish, amphibians, reptiles, and birds in the Sequence Read Archive and a new RNA-seq dataset to further explore bornaviral diversity and evolutionary history. Our analysis identified nearly complete and partial bornaviral genomes across multiple host taxa, that represented either

Diagnosis and genetic analysis of the worldwide distributed Rattus-borne Trypanosoma (Herpetosoma) lewisi and its allied species in blood and fleas of rodents.

Trypanosoma (Herpetosoma) lewisi is a cosmopolitan parasite of rodents strongly linked to the human dispersal of Rattus spp. from Asia to the rest of the world. This species is highly phylogenetically related to trypanosomes from other rodents (T. lewisi-like), and sporadically infects other mammals. T. lewisi may opportunistically infect humans, and has been considered an emergent rat-borne zoonosis associated to poverty. We developed the THeCATL-PCR based on Cathepsin L (CATL) sequences to specifically detect T. (Herpetosoma) spp., and assess their genetic diversity. This method exhibited hi
