BACKGROUND: Bonebridge is an suitable option for conductive hearing loss, however, the traditional approach cannot accomplished a satisfying implantation for patients with congenital malformation or radical mastoidectomy.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the clinical application of retrosigmoid sinus approach in Bonebridge implantation and postoperative evaluation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 11 patients who underwent retrosigmoid sinus approach Bonebridge implantation from March 2016 to September 2019 were retrospectively analyzed, including 6 males and 5 females, aged 12-54 years old (30.6 in average).

Cholesterol granuloma (CG) is the most common benign lesion of the petrous apex, however, it can grow significantly large and become destructive causing a diagnostic dilemma. This case presents a 25-year-old female with 2-year history of left-sided progressive and profound hearing loss, a transient left-sided facial paralysis and cranial nerve 10 palsy who presented with a blue middle ear mass. Her diagnosis did not become apparent until direct visualization intraoperatively. The objective of this case study is to highlight the destructive capabilities of CG and the importance to keep it in th

The hypothesis that the close contiguity between the cholesterol granulomas and some rich blood sources provided the trigger to the aggressive nature of tympanomastoid cholesterol granulomas has been recently reported. To corroborate this new etiopathogenetic theory we retrospectively reviewed a series of 14 patients with primary middle ear and mastoid cholesterol granulomas and investigated the temporal bone marrow invasion and its hematopoietic potentialities and a possible cholesterol granulomas contiguity with relevant vascular structures such as the carotid artery, sigmoid jugular system,

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to: understand the effect that high intensity noise associated with drilling (during otological surgery) has on hearing in the contralateral ear; determine the nature of hearing loss, if any, by establishing whether it is temporary or persistent; and examine the association between hearing loss and various drill parameters.
METHODS: A prospective clinical study was carried out at a tertiary centre. Thirty patients with unilateral cholesteatoma and normal contralateral hearing were included. Patients were evaluated pre-operatively and for five days following surger

OBJECTIVE: A systematic review of literature to determine the clinical outcome and safety of the range of acoustic hearing implants (AHIs) in adults with mixed hearing loss (MHL).
DATA SOURCES: Databases MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane were searched with no language restrictions between 1950, or the start date of each database, up to March 1, 2013.
STUDY SELECTION: Initial search found 1,794 studies, of which, 19 met the inclusion criteria of AHI for adults with MHL where safety, coupling strategies to the inner ear, hearing outcome, and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) were analyzed,

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the primary and long-term surgical outcomes of patients with postinflammatory medial meatal fibrosis.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted of 14 ears (in 12 patients) with postinflammatory medial meatal fibrosis managed surgically. Outcome measures were primary (i.e. less than six months) and long-term (i.e. greater than five years) closure of the air-bone gap, and the incidence of otorrhoea and restenosis.
RESULTS: At primary review, the mean air-bone gap ± standard deviation had decreased from 29.9 ± 11.6 dB to 12 ± 8.4 dB (p < 0.0006). Seven (50 per cent) e

INTRODUCTION: Malignant otitis externa is a life-threatening infection of the skull base. Its presentation is not always typical.
CASE REPORTS: We report three cases of malignant otitis externa which illustrate the diversity of its clinical manifestations and the difficulties in its diagnosis.
DISCUSSION: The perception of malignant otitis externa as an infection caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa in diabetic patients is not always correct. The adoption of diagnostic criteria could be helpful in identifying atypical cases.

In 14 patients, an ossiculoplasty was performed via a transcanal approach; the malleus head was removed with the incus, and the ossicular chain was reconstructed either by incus interposition (9 cases) or by using a partial ossicular replacement prosthesis (5 cases). BACKGROUND: Otosclerosis is a complex bone remodeling disorder of the otic capsule due to persisting measles virus infection and consecutive inflammatory reaction. In fact, clinical and demographic features of otosclerosis have reference to stapes ankylosis. In the clinical practice, otosclerosis and stapes ankylosis are incorrect synonyms.
METHODS: Nonotosclerotic stapes footplates (n = 284) removed during stapedectomy were analyzed histologically. Otosclerosis was excluded during the his

This study estimated the prevalence of hearing disorders and associated risk factors in a 10% sample of all secondary-school students in Ismailia city, Egypt. All participants were given a questionnaire and Weber and Rinne tests for hearing disabilities. Among 2633 students, the prevalence of hearing loss was 22.2%, mostly sensorineural hearing loss. More students at technical schools had mixed sensorineural and conductive hearing loss (46.2%) than students at general (28.6%) or commercial (25.3%) schools. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified the number of attacks of otitis med

CONCLUSION: In those patients for whom vestibular neurectomy has been selected due to the disabling recurrence of vertigo spells, Meniett therapy has been shown to allow avoidance of this surgical procedure in a fairly high percentage of patients with Meniere's disease (MD). Our data would also support a better result when pressure treatment is acting on MD of short duration.
OBJECTIVE: To test the possibility that low pressure treatment (Meniett) could avoid vestibular neurectomy in patients with MD that was refractory to medical treatment.

BACKGROUND: Revision middle ear surgery for persistent conductive hearing loss after previous tympanoplasty or ossiculoplasty is technically demanding because of scar tissue, anatomical distortion, and the unpredictable status of the ossicular chain. Although transcanal endoscopic ear surgery (TEES) has been increasingly adopted for primary tympanoplasty and ossiculoplasty, its feasibility as the sole surgical modality in postoperative ears has rarely been reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe two adult patients (Case 1: a 63-year-old man and Case 2: a 72-year-old man) who presented with l

BACKGROUND: Acquired external auditory canal stenosis (EACS) is a major cause of conductive hearing loss in children and adults, with multiple etiologies including otological surgical procedures, blunt trauma, and chronic inflammatory diseases, which can lead to persistent hearing loss and other adverse outcomes. Due to children's unique anatomical fragility and strong tissue proliferative capacity, the clinical management of EACS remains challenging. This study aims to explore the clinical characteristics, optimal surgical approaches and prognostic factors of traumatic EACS in children, so as

There are insufficient data regarding the safety of otologic procedures in the setting of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Given the proclivity for respiratory pathogens to involve the middle ear and the significant aerosolization associated with many otologic procedures, safety precautions should follow current recommendations for procedures involving the upper airway. Until preoperative diagnostic testing becomes standardized and readily available, elective cases should be deferred and emergent/urgent cases should be treated as high risk for COVID-19 exposure. Necessary otol
