Elucidating the relevance of high temperature and elevated CO2 in plant secondary metabolites (PSMs) production.

Plant secondary metabolites (PSMs) are plant products that are discontinuously distributed throughout the plant kingdom. These secondary compounds have various chemical groups and are named according to their chemical constituents. For their ability to defend biotic and abiotic stresses they are considered as plants' defensive compounds. These metabolites take part in plant protection from insects, herbivores, and extreme environmental conditions. They are indirectly involved in plants' growth and development. Secondary metabolites are also used by people in the form of medicines, pharmaceutic

An approach for evaluating the economic impacts of harmful algal blooms: The effects of blooms of toxic Dinophysis spp. on the productivity of Scottish shellfish farms.

Shellfish production is an important activity for the economy of many countries. As well as its direct value, it helps to stabilize communities in rural areas characterized by limited job opportunities. It is also important for consumers who recognize shellfish as a healthy product that gains its nutrition from natural plankton without the need for fertilizers, chemical treatments or other anthropogenic intervention typical of terrestrial agriculture or other marine aquaculture. Nevertheless, global shellfish fisheries are under threat from harmful algal blooms (HABs) and related biotoxins, wh

[Recombinant short TNF-BD protein from smallpox virus is pharmacologically active in an experimental septic shock model].

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) is one among the key cytokines that mediate the immune system to protect humans against viral infections. Throughout evolution, anthropogenic Variola virus (VARV) has developed effective mechanisms to overcome human defense reactions. The viral genome encodes soluble proteins imitating the structure of cellular cytokine receptors. These proteins compete with cellular receptors for cytokine binding, thus blocking the antiviral immune response. In particular, the G2R gene of VARV encodes the TNF decoy receptor, VARV-CrmB protein. This protein consists of N-ended TNF-b

Systematic review: the impact of socioeconomic factors on Aedes aegypti mosquito distribution in the mainland United States.

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are primary vectors of dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya and Zika viruses. Ae. aegypti is highly anthropophilic and relies nearly exclusively on human blood meals and habitats for reproduction. Socioeconomic factors may be associated with the spread of Ae. aegypti due to their close relationship with humans. This paper describes and summarizes the published literature on the association between socioeconomic variables and the distribution of Ae. aegypti mosquitoes in the mainland United States. A comprehensive search of PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, and EBSCO

Seasonal and diurnal characteristics of carbonyls in the urban atmosphere of Changsha, a mountainous city in south-central China.

Seasonal and diurnal variations of carbonyl compounds were investigated in the ambient air of a mountainous city in China, from September 2014 to July 2015. The most abundant carbonyl compounds are formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acetone, propionaldehyde and methacryladehyde (MACR), which were all measured in most samples. The average concentrations of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, propionaldehyde and MACR in the atmosphere in Changsha were broken down into each season: 6.57, 3.29, 3.66, 0.67 and 0.54 μg/m3 respectively during Spring, 14.09, 8.28, 9.02, 1.28 and 0.6 μg/m3, respectively d

Anthropogenic Food Subsidy to a Commensal Carnivore: The Value and Supply of Human Faeces in the Diet of Free-Ranging Dogs.

As the global population of free-ranging domestic dogs grows, there is increasing concern about impacts on human health and wildlife conservation. Effective management of dog populations requires reliable information on their diet, feeding behavior, and social ecology. Free-ranging dogs are reliant on humans, but anthropogenic food subsidies, particularly human faeces (i.e., coprophagy) have not previously been fully quantified. In this study we assess the contributions of different food types to the diet, and their influences on the social behaviour of free-ranging dogs in communal lands of r

Coal-water slurries containing petrochemicals to solve problems of air pollution by coal thermal power stations and boiler plants: An introductory review.

This introductory study presents the analysis of the environmental, economic and energy performance indicators of burning high-potential coal water slurries containing petrochemicals (CWSP) instead of coal, fuel oil, and natural gas at typical thermal power stations (TPS) and a boiler plant. We focus on the most hazardous anthropogenic emissions of coal power industry: sulfur and nitrogen oxides. The research findings show that these emissions may be several times lower if coal and oil processing wastes are mixed with water as compared to the combustion of traditional pulverized coal, even of

Sulfur-modified rice husk biochar: A green method for the remediation of mercury contaminated soil.

Mercury (Hg) contamination of surface soils has increased by ~86Giga grams due to anthropogenic activities. There is an urgent need to find new, effective and preferably 'green' remediation technologies to protect human health and the environment. Sulfur-modification of sorbents can greatly enhance Hg sorption capacity - by forming low solubility HgS (cinnabar). However, S-modified sorbents are not considered suitable for soil remediation due to the economic cost and secondary environmental impacts of sorbents such as granulated activated carbon (GAC), and the toxicity of S-modifiers such as t

Dynamics of antibiotic resistance genes and their relationships with system treatment efficiency in a horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland.

Municipal wastewater treatment is one of the pathways by which antibiotic resistance genes from anthropogenic sources are introduced into natural ecosystems. This study examined the abundance and proportion dynamics of seven antibiotic resistance genes in the wetland media biofilm and in the influent and effluent of parallel horizontal subsurface flow mesocosm cells of a newly established hybrid constructed wetland treating municipal wastewater. The targeted genes (tetA, tetB, tetM, ermB, sul1, ampC, and qnrS) encode resistance to major antibiotic classes such as tetracyclines, macrolides, sul

The genotoxicity of ambient outdoor air, a review: Salmonella mutagenicity.

Mutagens in urban air pollution come from anthropogenic sources (especially combustion sources) and are products of airborne chemical reactions. Bacterial mutation tests have been used for large, multi-site, and/or time series studies, for bioassay-directed fractionation studies, for identifying the presence of specific classes of mutagens, and for doing site- or source-comparisons for relative levels of airborne mutagens. Early research recognized that although carcinogenic PAHs were present in air samples they could not account for the majority of the mutagenic activity detected. The mutagen

Endangered and Protected Medicinal Plants in Forest Ecosystems: Diversity, Conservation Status, Therapeutic Potential, and Management Strategies.

Medicinal plants constitute an essential component of global biodiversity and have long served as a primary source of traditional and modern therapeutic agents. Forest ecosystems harbor a significant proportion of medicinal plant diversity, providing habitats for numerous species with recognized pharmacological value. However, increasing anthropogenic pressures, including habitat destruction, overexploitation, land-use change, forest fragmentation, and climate change, have contributed to the decline of many medicinal plant populations worldwide. Consequently, a growing number of medicinal fore

Explainable and uncertainty-aware AI for national-scale ecological status assessment of Finnish lakes under the EU water framework directive.

Understanding lake ecological status (ES) and the environmental factors that influence it is critical for maintaining ecosystem stability. The European Union Water Framework Directive (WFD, 2000/60/EC) provides a standardised methodology for assessing ES, classifying lakes into five categories ranging from Bad to High. However, conventional assessment approaches are labour-intensive, time-consuming, and limited in temporal resolution, particularly in boreal and Arctic regions where ecosystems are increasingly affected by climate change and anthropogenic pressures. Using the official Finnish WF

Drivers of Genetic Diversity in Keystone Forest Species: Contrasting Responses of Rare and Common Saproxylic Beetles to Habitat Location and Naturalness.

Understanding how forest management shapes genetic diversity is pivotal for the conservation of saproxylic beetles, key indicators of ecosystem integrity. However, the relative influence of spatial isolation versus anthropogenic modification on their genetic structure remains poorly understood across Central Europe. We investigated whether geographic location (forests spanned over 600 km W-to-E and 500 km S-to-N) and forest management type (primaeval vs. commercial) drive genetic differentiation across 12 beetle species with varying abundance (common/rare) and pest status (pest/not-pest). Seventy-five years of change: Long-term reorganisation of helminth communities in the rook (Corvus frugilegus) in Ukraine.

Population declines and extinctions affect all animal groups, yet long-term monitoring of helminths remains rare despite their ecological importance. This study analyses the helminth communities of the rook Corvus frugilegus Linnaeus, 1758 in Ukraine across three 25-year periods spanning over seventy-five years (1950-2024), using a total of 275 examined individuals, taking into account the effect of season on helminth communities. A total of 30 helminth species were identified (13 nematodes, 10 trematodes, 5 cestodes, and 2 acanthocephalans). Community composition differed significantly among

Molecular war and peace: the concurrent path to antibiosis and antibiotic resistance.

The possibility of the emergence of proto-antibiotic and proto-resistance molecules in the prebiotic world, as primary elements involved in "molecular wars," is examined in this conceptual review. Throughout the Earth's early history, prebiotic chemical processes produced molecules that associated both randomly and persistently. Over time, those configurations that achieved greater stability were favored, their longevity effectively serving as a mechanism for prebiotic selection. Available chemical molecules or physical surfaces could stabilize and prolong the duration of certain aggregates, c

Nitrate contamination in a karst aquifer affected by acid mine drainage during a storm event: Insights from stable isotopes and hydrochemical tracers.

Hydroclimatic extremes increasingly threaten groundwater quality, but storm-driven nitrate (NO3-) dynamics within highly permeable karst networks remain poorly constrained. Integrating high-frequency monitoring, artificial tracer tests and multi-isotope tracking (δD/δ18O-H2O, δ15N/δ18O-NO3- and δ13C-DIC), this study deciphered the coupled evolution of hydrological pathways, water quality and nitrogen transformations during an extreme storm event (116 mm within 2.9 h) in an acid mine drainage (AMD)-affected karst watershed in China. During flood recession, a rapid shift in NO3- source dominance

Long-term serological monitoring of Leishmania infantum in European wild rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) in Mediterranean ecosystems of southern Spain.

Leishmaniosis is a vector-borne zoonosis mainly caused by Leishmania infantum in Europe. Exposure to this protozoan has been widely documented in various domestic and wild species, which have been suggested as competent reservoirs of L. infantum in anthropogenic environments. Notably, wild lagomorphs, particularly the European wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), have emerged as key natural reservoirs, linked to human leishmaniosis outbreaks in Spain. Despite their recognized role in the L. infantum epidemiology, significant knowledge gaps remain regarding the spatiotemporal dynamics of this p

The integration of vision transformers and SAM for automated methane super-emitter detection using TROPOMI data.

Methane (CH4) significantly contributes to global warming, with a global warming potential approximately 84 times greater than carbon dioxide (CO2) over 20 years. Numerous studies have shown that a small number of high-emitting point sources, known as super-emitters, account for a disproportionately large share of total anthropogenic CH4 emissions, underscoring the urgency of targeted detection strategies. Recently, a growing focus has been on using remote sensing technology for CH4 monitoring across various emission sources. As such, this study introduces an automated solution for identifying

Characteristics, source apportionment, and secondary transformation of volatile organic compounds during different seasons at an urban site in southeast China.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are key precursors to secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and ozone (O3) formation. In this study, 114 VOCs were continuously online measured in Wuxi, from March 2022 to February 2023. Annual data revealed clear seasonal variation in VOCs concentrations, the lowest in autumn (29.78 ± 12.21 ppbv) and the highest in winter (37.63 ± 15.85 ppbv). Alkanes (36.40 %) and oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs, 32.94 %) dominated annually. Diurnal variation in VOCs species (e.g., alkanes, alkenes, aromatics, and halohydrocarbons) was similar to total VOCs (TVOCs) and presented bimodal pa
