Companion Animals as a Source of Viruses for Human Beings and Food Production Animals.

Companion animals comprise a wide variety of species, including dogs, cats, horses, ferrets, guinea pigs, reptiles, birds and ornamental fish, as well as food production animal species, such as domestic pigs, kept as companion animals. Despite their prominent place in human society, little is known about the role of companion animals as sources of viruses for people and food production animals. Therefore, we reviewed the literature for accounts of infections of companion animals by zoonotic viruses and viruses of food production animals, and prioritized these viruses in terms of human health a

The melanin-concentrating hormone receptors: neuronal and non-neuronal functions.

Melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) is a cyclic peptide highly conserved in vertebrates and was originally identified as a skin-paling factor in Teleosts. In fishes, MCH also participates in the regulation of the stress-response and feeding behaviour. Mammalian MCH is a hypothalamic neuropeptide that displays multiple functions, mostly controlling feeding behaviour and energy homeostasis. Transgenic mouse models and pharmacological studies have shown the importance of the MCH system as a potential target in the treatment of appetite disorders and obesity as well as anxiety and psychiatric dise

Twenty years of immunocontraceptive research: lessons learned.

The National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC) began immunocontraception vaccine research by testing porcine zona pellucida (PZP) on white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Early PZP research demonstrated that PZP induced infertility; however, increased length of the rut was observed in PZP-treated deer. An alternative vaccine using a keyhole limpet hemocyanin-gonadotropin-releasing hormone (KLH-GnRH) conjugate formulated with modified Freund's adjuvant was developed at NWRC. Suppression of GnRH has reduced reproduction in both sexes but is most effective in females. This vaccine was effecti

Selection of Antigenically Advanced Variants of Influenza Viruses.

Influenza virus epidemics are caused when seasonal influenza viruses (i.e., those circulating in humans) acquire mutations in the antigenic sites of the viral hemagglutinin (HA) protein that prevent the antibodies present in people from binding to the virus and blocking virus interaction with cellular receptors. To date, vaccination is the best protective option against seasonal influenza viruses. Because influenza viruses frequently acquire mutations in their antigenic sites, vaccine viruses need to be updated regularly. Here, we present an experimental system that allows the simulation of in

Canine distemper virus in wildlife in south-western Europe.

Multi-host pathogens emerging and re-emerging at the wildlife-domestic animal interface affect wildlife management and conservation. This is the case of canine distemper virus (CDV), a paramyxovirus closely related to human measles virus and rinderpest virus of cattle. With an area of 10,603 km2 , Asturias region in Atlantic Spain is a hotspot of carnivore diversity, which includes the largest Eurasian brown bear (Ursus arctos arctos) population and one of the largest wolf (Canis lupus) populations in south-western Europe. In 2020-2021, we recorded mortality due to distemper in four carnivore

Animal models of Reye's syndrome.

The etiology and pathogenesis of Reye's syndrome, an often-fatal childhood disorder, is not completely understood. Although Reye's syndrome is initiated with a prodromal viral illness, the viral infection alone is not sufficient to cause the syndrome. Interactions of virus with dietary or environmental agents such as pesticides, solvents, or drugs may be important in the development of Reye's syndrome. The roles of viruses, drugs, or other agents and their interactions in causing Reye's syndrome are difficult to study in patients because viral infection and ingestion of drugs (or exposure to e

Concurrent therapeutic and behavioral interventions are associated with a reduced number of emerging Dracunculus medinensis worms in dogs in Chad.

Dracunculus medinensis (Guinea worm; GW) is a parasitic nematode that causes dracunculiasis (Guinea worm disease; GWD). The annual incidence of GWD in humans has been reduced by over 99.9% globally since the 1980s thanks to the implementation of complementary interventions. Dogs are now the primary hosts of GW and impede eradication efforts. The antihelmenthic drug, flubendazole (FLBZ), was suggested as a possible therapeutic intervention after it was found to be partially effective at reducing fertility of D. medinensis in experimentally infected ferrets. A 2019 clinical trial of FLBZ in Chad

Edible baits for systemic flea control, plague mitigation, and wildlife conservation: evaluation of four active ingredients with three rodent species in western North America.

The flea-borne agent of plague, Yersinia pestis, is lethal to endangered black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigripes, BFFs) and the prairie dogs (Cynomys spp., PDs) on which BFFs depend for habitat and prey. We developed bait pellets containing insecticides for flea control with PDs. Individual baits contained 0.46, 0.91, 1.21, or 1.52 mg fipronil, 5.40 mg afoxolaner, 50.62 mg fluralaner, or 85.20 mg spinosad. From 2023 to 2025, we tested the baits with black-tailed PDs (C. ludovicianus, BTPDs), Gunnison's PDs (C. gunnisoni, GPDs), and Richardson's ground squirrels (Urocitellus richardsonii, RGSs).

Do Animals Play a Role in the Transmission of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2)? A Commentary.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) belongs to the Beta-coronavirus genus. It is 96.2% homologous to bat CoV RaTG13 and 88% homologous to two bat SARS-like coronaviruses. SARS-CoV-2 is the infectious agent responsible for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), which was first reported in the Hubei province of Wuhan, China, at the beginning of December 2019. Human transmission from COVID-19 patients or incubation carriers occurs via coughing, sneezing, speaking, discharge from the nose, or fecal contamination. Various strains of the virus have been reported around the worl

Preclinical evaluation of a replication-deficient intranasal DeltaNS1 H5N1 influenza vaccine.

BACKGROUND: We developed a novel intranasal influenza vaccine approach that is based on the construction of replication-deficient vaccine viruses that lack the entire NS1 gene (DeltaNS1 virus). We previously showed that these viruses undergo abortive replication in the respiratory tract of animals. The local release of type I interferons and other cytokines and chemokines in the upper respiratory tract may have a "self-adjuvant effect", in turn increasing vaccine immunogenicity. As a result, DeltaNS1 viruses elicit strong B- and T- cell mediated immune responses. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDING

Shift of chloride reversal potential in neurons of the accessory optic system in albinotic rats.

Albinism affects the anatomy and physiology of the visual system in mammals. Behavioural, anatomical and in vivo electrophysiological investigations revealed that the optokinetic reflex is abnormal and retinal slip neurons in the nucleus of the optic tract and the dorsal terminal nucleus of the accessory optic system (NOT-DTN) lack direction selectivity and have a reduced dendritic tree in albinotic rats and ferrets. Earlier investigations show a disturbed chloride homeostasis and a depolarizing action of GABAergic currents in visual cortex cells of albinotic rats. We assume that an altered lo

Immunological effects of the orally administered neuraminidase inhibitor oseltamivir in influenza virus-infected and uninfected mice.

Oseltamivir (GS4104), the ethyl ester prodrug of the carbocyclic transition state sialic acid analog GS4071, has been reported to be a striking inhibitor of influenza A and B virus infections in mice and ferrets. Multiple studies indicate this material to also be active against the disease in humans, and it has recently been approved for human use. The effect of oral gavage (p.o.) therapy of oseltamivir on various immune factors considered to be of importance in primary influenza virus infection was studied in mice. Both uninfected animals and those infected with influenza A/NWS/33 (H1N1) viru

Cloning and genetic characterization of the Helicobacter pylori and Helicobacter mustelae flaB flagellin genes and construction of H. pylori flaA- and flaB-negative mutants by electroporation-mediated allelic exchange.

Helicobacter pylori is one of the most common human pathogens. It causes chronic gastritis and is involved in the pathogenesis of gastroduodenal ulcer disease and possibly gastric carcinoma. Helicobacter mustelae is a bacterium closely related to H. pylori that causes gastritis and ulcer disease in ferrets and is therefore considered an important animal model of gastric Helicobacter infections. Motility, even in a viscous environment, is conferred to the bacteria by several sheathed flagella and is regarded as one of their principal virulence factors. The flagellar filament of H. pylori consis

Mitigating Effects of Nest Structure on Predation Risk in Hainan Partridge (Arborophila ardens).

Nest predation is the primary factor contributing to breeding failure, particularly in tropical regions. Enclosed nest structures can disrupt predator search efficiency and reduce predation risk. However, their effectiveness varies with environmental conditions. In this study, we tested whether the arched covering structure of Hainan Partridge (Arborophila ardens) nests reduces predation risk by disrupting predator search efficiency, and compared the difference in artificial nest predation between the interior and exterior of the national park. To evaluate this, we conducted artificial nest ex

A Host-Restricted Self-Attenuated Influenza Virus Provides Broad Pan-Influenza A Protection in a Mouse Model.

Influenza virus infections can cause a broad range of symptoms, form mild respiratory problems to severe and fatal complications. While influenza virus poses a global health threat, the frequent antigenic change often significantly compromises the protective efficacy of seasonal vaccines, further increasing the vulnerability to viral infection. Therefore, it is in great need to employ strategies for the development of universal influenza vaccines (UIVs) which can elicit broad protection against diverse influenza viruses. Using a mouse infection model, we examined the breadth of protection of t

Lyssaviruses and rabies: current conundrums, concerns, contradictions and controversies.

Lyssaviruses are bullet-shaped, single-stranded, negative-sense RNA viruses and the causative agents of the ancient zoonosis rabies. Africa is the likely home to the ancestors of taxa residing within the Genus Lyssavirus, Family Rhabdoviridae. Diverse lyssaviruses are envisioned as co-evolving with bats, as the ultimate reservoirs, over seemingly millions of years. In terms of relative distribution, overt abundance, and resulting progeny, rabies virus is the most successful lyssavirus species today, but for unknown reasons. All mammals are believed to be susceptible to rabies virus infection.

An immunohistological study of cytokeratin 20 in human and mammalian oral epithelium.

Cytokeratin (CK) 20 is a low molecular-weight intermediate filament reportedly expressed only by benign and malignant gastrointestinal epithelium, urothelium and Merkel cells. The main aims here were to map its expression in normal oral mucosa of humans and other mammals, and to determine whether it was expressed by abnormal human oral epithelium. Salivary and odontogenic epithelium were also analysed. An immunoperoxidase method was used on wax-embedded and cryostat sections. In addition, double-labelling experiments were undertaken to determine the association between CK 20 expression and tha

Development of primary visual projections occurs entirely postnatally in the fat-tailed dunnart, a marsupial mouse, Sminthopsis crassicaudata.

We have examined the development of retinal projections in a diminutive polyprotodont marsupial, the fat-tailed dunnart, Sminthopsis crassicaudata. Here, we document the most immature mammalian visual system at birth described to date. At postnatal day (P) 0, the retinal ganglion cell layer has yet to form, and axons have not entered the optic stalk. By P4, the retinal ganglion cell layer could be distinguished at the posterior pole, and the front of growing axons extended one-third the length of the optic stalk, a distance of approximately 150 microm; a few pioneer growth cones had grown beyo

Potential for hepatic and renal dysfunction during influenza B infection, convalescence, and after induction of secondary viremia.

Whether infection with influenza B virus alters hepatic function was examined in the ferret. Also, the possibility that viral-specific antibodies (Ab) could be produced well before their detection in serum was explored. During the febrile period of influenza, reductions in the serum potassium, anion gap, ammonia, albumin and CPK and elevations of the BUN, creatinine and the GGTP levels occurred. With convalescence, the electrolytes, BUN and creatinine normalized, FFA, SGPT and CPK levels rose and the serum GGTP rose even further. Assessing antigenic drift and phylogeny of influenza A (H1N1) pdm09 virus in Kenya using HA1 sub-unit of the hemagglutinin gene.

Influenza A (H1N1) pdm09 virus emerged in North America in 2009 and has been established as a seasonal strain in humans. After an antigenic stasis of about six years, new antigenically distinct variants of the virus emerged globally in 2016 necessitating a change in the vaccine formulation for the first time in 2017. Herein, we analyzed thirty-eight HA sequences of influenza A (H1N1) pdm09 strains isolated in Kenya during 2015-2018 seasons, to evaluate their antigenic and molecular properties based on the HA1 sub-unit. Our analyses revealed that the A (H1N1) pdm09 strains that circulated in Ke
