[Digital support in dysphagia care: Care needs, everyday obstacles, and requirements for a user-centered application - A qualitative study with speech therapists].

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia poses a major challenge due to its clinical, psychosocial and care-related implications. Older adults with underlying neurogenic conditions are particularly vulnerable. However, despite the availability of effective therapeutic approaches, outpatient dysphagia care is often characterized by structural shortcomings such as long therapy waiting times, insufficient frequency of therapy sessions, or a lack of diagnostic equipment due to specialist staff shortages. Digital health applications may offer potential support, yet their use in dysphagia management remains limited. T

A Biopsychosocial and Interprofessional Approach to the Treatment of Family and Intimate Partner Violence: It Takes a Village.

Family and intimate partner violence and abuse (FIPV) is a critical public health problem with repercussions for mental and physical health. FIPV exposure also is associated with social difficulties such as low socioeconomic status, legal issues, poor access to employment and education, housing instability, and difficulty meeting other basic needs. As a biopsychosocial problem, one discipline alone cannot adequately address FIPV. While individuals who experience FIPV traditionally seek respite, care and safety through domestic violence shelters, social services or courts, they also often prese

Spiritual needs in palliative care inpatients: a four-year analysis of clinical data from a tertiary care center.

BACKGROUND: Spiritual needs are a core dimension of palliative care, yet their systematic documentation remains limited. This study explores the spiritual needs expressed by palliative care inpatients and examines how these needs vary in documentation based on gender, below and above the Swiss retirement age, religious affiliation, and specialty documenting them. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 747 electronic health records (EHRs) from the Acute Palliative Care Unit at the University Hospital Zurich (2019-2022). Documentation by psychological and pastoral care services was a

Barriers to D&E practice among family planning subspecialists.

OBJECTIVE: Over 95% of all second-trimester abortions are managed by dilation and evacuation procedures (D&E) and account for nearly 9% of all abortions in the United States annually. The Fellowship in Family Planning (FFP) offers subspecialty training in abortion and contraception to obstetrician-gynecologists and family medicine physicians. Twenty years after the FFP founding, we report on the abortion practice characteristics and specific barriers these subspecialists face. STUDY DESIGN: We surveyed obstetrician-gynecologist family planning (FP) subspecialists by email regarding second-tri

Bullying of staff registered nurses in the workplace: a preliminary study for developing personal and organizational strategies for the transformation of hostile to healthy workplace environments.

The primary purpose of this study was to validate the perceptions of frequency and patterns of bullying behavior experienced by registered nurses (RNs) across the United States. This study was completed to develop relevant and sensitive tailored interventions for the future. A 30-item anonymous electronic survey was used to identify the frequency, type, perpetrators, and personal and professional consequences of bullying. Findings from the overall population of 303 RN respondents (mean age of 49 years) indicated that 70% of the bullying was reported by a predominant group of staff RNs (n = 212

Evaluating the quality of interaction between medical students and nurses in a large teaching hospital.

BACKGROUND: Effective health care depends on multidisciplinary collaboration and teamwork, yet little is known about how well medical students and nurses interact in the hospital environment, where physicians-in-training acquire their first experiences as members of the health care team. The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality of interaction between third-year medical students and nurses during clinical rotations. METHODS: We surveyed 268 Indiana University medical students and 175 nurses who worked at Indiana University Hospital, the School's chief clinical training site. The

[Problems in the management of thyrotoxicosis in Black Africa: the Tongolese experience].

In black Africa, and particularly in Togo, management of thyreotoxicosis is not simple. The intervention of several specialists and effective patient collaboration is needed. In a majority of cases, the patient's apprehensions, financial problems, and taboos prevent correct management. We report 30 cases of thyreotoxicosis in 82 patients with thyroid disease seen over a 5-year period in the Internal Medicine and Cardiology Department of the Lomé teaching hospitals. Graves' disease was the most frequent (83.33%), followed by multinodular goiter (10%) and toxic nodule (6.67%). Diagnosis was stri

An evaluation of the contribution of critical care outreach to the clinical management of the critically ill ward patient in two acute NHS trusts.

This paper reports on an evaluation of the role and contribution of outreach in the management of the critically ill ward patient using Stake's Responsive Model (Stake, 1975) and case study methodology (Simons, 1980). Twenty cases were examined, purposefully sampling all staff involved in the case identified by an initial interview with the outreach nurse. In total, 80 interviews were carried out, 20 with the outreach nurses and 54 with other members of health care teams involved in the cases, and six further targeted in-depth interviews with senior anaesthetic and nursing staff. The outreach

Barriers and facilitators to population-based lung cancer screening in Belgium: a qualitative stakeholder analysis in a pre-implementation context.

BACKGROUND: Low-dose computed tomography screening has demonstrated effectiveness in reducing lung cancer mortality among high-risk populations. Despite growing international momentum and supportive evidence, population-based lung cancer screening has not yet been implemented in Flanders, Belgium. Successful implementation requires insight into context-specific barriers and facilitators from both healthcare professionals (HCPs) and potential screening participants (PSPs). This study aimed to explore stakeholders' perspectives on the implementation and uptake of lung cancer screening in Flander

Stakeholder experiences and expectations of transition of care services to reduce medication-related hospital readmission for cardiology patients.

BACKGROUND: Transition of care (ToC) for patients with cardiovascular diseases is a complex, high-risk period often leading to medication-related harm (MRH) and hospital readmissions. While specialised programs exist, a gap in individualised medication management services exist for specific cardiology patient populations. Pharmacist-led, interdisciplinary ToC services have demonstrated a positive impact on patient outcomes. The REducing hospital re-admission for high-risk CARDiology patients (RECARD) program aims to address this by co-designing, implementing, and evaluating a new pharmacist-le

Public health dentists in maternal and child oral health in India: workforce roles, systemic barriers, and policy implications from a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal and child oral health (MCOH) plays an important role in preventing early childhood caries and improving pregnancy outcomes. Despite global recognition of this link, India has no formal incorporation of oral health into maternal care. Public Health Dentists may be well-positioned to address this gap; however, their roles within maternal and child oral health services have received limited attention. The present exploratory workforce study, therefore examined the perceptions, roles, and systemic barriers experienced by Public Health Dentists in India. METHODOLOGY: A mixed-m

Meeting the mental health needs of children and youth through integrated care: A systems and policy perspective.

The health home program established under the Affordable Care Act (2010) is derived from the medical home concept originated by the American Academy of Pediatrics in 1968 to provide a care delivery model for children with special health care needs. As applied to behavioral health, health homes or medical homes have become increasingly adult-focused models, with a primary goal of coordinating physical and behavioral health care. For children and youth with serious emotional disorders, health homes must go beyond physical and behavioral health care to connect with other child-focused sectors, su
