Plant responses to abiotic stresses: heavy metal-induced oxidative stress and protection by mycorrhization.

The aim of this review is to assess the mode of action and role of antioxidants as protection from heavy metal stress in roots, mycorrhizal fungi and mycorrhizae. Based on their chemical and physical properties three different molecular mechanisms of heavy metal toxicity can be distinguished: (a) production of reactive oxygen species by autoxidation and Fenton reaction; this reaction is typical for transition metals such as iron or copper, (b) blocking of essential functional groups in biomolecules, this reaction has mainly been reported for non-redox-reactive heavy metals such as cadmium and

First Report of Meloidogyne marylandi Infecting Bermudagrass in Florida.

Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) are common parasites attacking turfgrasses in the United States, but the species of these nematodes is typically unresolved unless targeted surveys are performed (3). Using morphometric analysis and an RFLP method (3), an investigation of a golf course green in Florida with a history of infestation by root-knot nematodes was conducted to identify the species present. This 'Tifdwarf' bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon × C. transvaalensis) putting green at the University of Florida Research Unit in Citra, FL, exhibited irregular patches of declining turf. Turf

Single-cell transcriptional decoding of iron deficiency responses in maize root tips.

Maize roots respond to iron stress through cell type specificity and enhanced radial transport of Fe-DMA in root cells. Iron (Fe) deficiency, resulting from low Fe solubility in aerated soils, represents a major constraint for crop productivity. Maize (Zea mays), a Strategy II plant, acquires Fe through phytosiderophore (PS)-mediated chelation of rhizospheric Fe (III) and subsequent uptake of Fe (III)-PS complexes. However, cell-type-specific responses governing this process under Fe deficiency remain uncharacterized. Leveraging single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), we constructed a root tip

The pervasive impact of global climate change on plant-nematode interaction continuum.

Pest profiles in today's global food production system are continually affected by climate change and extreme weather. Under varying climatic conditions, plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) cause substantial economic damage to a wide variety of agricultural and horticultural commodities. In parallel, their herbivory also accredit to diverse ecosystem services such as nutrient cycling, allocation and turnover of plant biomass, shaping of vegetation community, and alteration of rhizospheric microorganism consortium by modifying the root exudation pattern. Thus PPNs, together with the vast majority

First Report of Trichodorus variopapillatus (Nematoda: Trichodoridae) from the Czech Republic.

Members of the Trichodoridae can cause substantial crop losses directly by feeding on plant roots and indirectly as vectors of tobraviruses; both vector and virus are polyphagous. In April of 2008, soil samples from the rhizosphere of Ulmus minor Mill in a deciduous broadleaf forest at Krivoklat yielded a population of Trichodorus variopapillatus Hooper, 1972. Nematodes were identified by morphological and morphometric characters as well as by molecular analysis. For classical identification, specimens were extracted from soil by a decanting-sieving method, heat killed and fixed in triethanola

First Report of Trichodorus similis from the Czech Republic (Nematoda: Trichodoridae).

Members of the Trichodoridae can cause substantial crop losses directly by feeding on plant roots and indirectly as vectors of tobraviruses; both vector and virus are polyphagous. Although trichodorid nematodes are important pests of agricultural crops, no data are available on the presence or extent of these nematodes in the Czech Republic. In June 2005, three soil samples from the rhizosphere of a Quercus sp. at Cerveny Vrch yielded a population of Trichodorus similis Seinhorst, 1963. Specimens were extracted from soil by a decanting-sieving method, heat killed, and fixed in triethanolamine

[Soil Microbial Nutrient Limitation Characteristics During Anthropogenic Transition from Desert Steppe to Shrubland].

The practice of planting xerophytic shrubs for vegetation restoration in arid and semi-arid grasslands has become a common model. In fact, it is accelerating the process of regional grassland shrub encroachment. At present, studies on the ecological consequences of anthropogenic shrub encroachment on grassland ecosystems have been gradually carried out. However, the changes in soil microbial nutrient utilization and limitation during the anthropogenic transition from desert grasslands to shrublands have not been thoroughly explored. Therefore, a representative grassland-shrubland mosaic formed

First Report of the Cactus Cyst Nematode, Cactodera cacti, on Cactus in Northern China.

During a survey for cyst nematodes from August to September 2011, nearly 15% of cactus (Cereus jamacaru) plants exhibited yellowing and wilting symptoms in greenhouses from Shenyang Botanical Garden, Liaoning Province, China. Cysts (averaging 50 per 100 g of samples) were detected by the sieving-decanting method on the roots and in rhizospheric soil. Second stage juveniles and eggs were isolated directly from cysts. Cysts, juveniles, and eggs were identified by morphology. Cysts (n = 12) were rounded to lemon-shaped with a protruding neck and vulva. The cyst wall had a zig-zag pattern. The vul

First Report of the Dagger Nematode Xiphinema dentatum (Nematoda: Longidoridae) in a Deciduous Forest in the Czech Republic.

Xiphinema species are migratory ectoparasitic nematodes that feed on an extensive range of hosts and several species are vectors of nepoviruses. These long nematodes are readily distinguished from most other plant parasitic nematodes by a long stylet with forked odontostyle and flanged odontophore. In May of 2005, a sample from the rhizosphere of Carpinus betulus and Acer platanoides in a forest near Silnicna, South Moravia yielded a population of Xiphinema dentatum Sturhan, 1978. X. dentatum previously has been reported to be associated with several forest and grassland species in Germany, th
