The haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) includes the triad of haemolytic anaemia, thrombocytopenia, and acute renal failure. The classical form [D(+) HUS] is caused by infectious agents, and it is a common cause of acute renal failure in children. The enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli-producing Shiga toxin (Stx) is the most common infectious agent causing HUS. Other infectious agents are Shigella and Streptococcus pneumoniae. Infections by S. pneumoniae can be particularly severe and has a higher acute mortality and a higher long-term morbidity compared to HUS by Stx. Atypical HUS [D(-)Stx(-)H

In this study, the association between genotypic and selected phenotypic characteristics was examined in a collection of Canadian Escherichia coli O157:H7 strains isolated from humans and cattle in the provinces of Alberta, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Quebec. In a subset of 69 strains selected on the basis of specific phage types (PTs), a strong correlation between the lineage-specific polymorphism assay (LSPA6) genotype and PT was observed with all strains of PTs 4, 14, 21, 31, 33, and 87 belonging to the LSPA6 lineage I (LSPA6-LI) genotype, while those of PTs 23, 45, 67, and 74 belonged to LS

BACKGROUND: Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) is a major etiological agent of persistent diarrhea in pediatric and adult population globally and it is a leading cause of infant mortality in developing countries. Bacterial culture and biochemical assays are insufficient for accurately identifying EPEC strains. In contrast, PCR serves as a major molecular diagnostic method for EPEC. However, the application of PCR is limited due to high cost, time taking and technical requirements.
METHOD AND RESULTS: In this study loop mediated isothermal amplification LAMP) was developed for rapid, spe

Infectious diarrhea in companion animals is one of the most common multi-factorial diseases in small animal medicine. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and different carriage patterns of different enteropathogens, including E. coli, Salmonella spp., Campylobacter spp., and yeast, in diarrheic and apparently healthy dogs and cats. A total of 71 dogs (31 diarrheic and 40 healthy) and 70 cats (42 diarrheic and 28 healthy) were subjected to microbiological examination. Diarrheagenic E. coli (DEC) had a higher prevalence in diarrheic cats (64.3) compared to diarrheic dogs (48.4). Enter

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157:H7 (STEC) is a major foodborne pathogen associated with illnesses such as diarrhea, hemorrhagic colitis, and hemolytic-uremic syndrome. Due to the limited data regarding the prevalence of E. coli O157:H7 in the study area, this cross-sectional study was conducted at the Haramaya municipal abattoir in Ethiopia from February to August 2021 to evaluate the prevalence and antibiotic resistance profile of the pathogen in slaughtered sheep, goats, and the surrounding environment. Systematic random sampling was used to obtain 440 samples from 78 sheep and 3

UNLABELLED: Hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) is defined by the triad of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and acute kidney injury (AKI) and is caused, in 90% of pediatric cases, by Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC-HUS) infection. While targeting complement component C5 using eculizumab has shown benefit in atypical HUS, its effect on STEC-HUS, especially on neurological outcome, remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the impact of eculizumab on neurological prognosis in pediatric STEC-HUS. The review was conducted in accordance

BACKGROUND: Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a zoonotic pathogen that contaminates abattoir workers, slaughter environments, slaughter equipment, and carcasses during abattoir processing. Infection with E. coli is associated with the consumption of contaminated food and water, and it is a potential threat to the health and welfare of both humans and animals. Hence, this study aimed to detect diarrheagenic E. coli and assess its antibiogram profile in two abattoir settings, in one health lens.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study in one health approach was conducted from December 2020 t

During the COVID-19 pandemic, nonpharmaceutical public health interventions (NPIs) were implemented worldwide to control the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. However, the incidence of other pathogens, including gastrointestinal (GI) pathogens, was also affected. Here, we reviewed studies assessing the impact of NPIs during the COVID-19 pandemic on the incidence of GI infections, particularly foodborne infections. A systems literature search was conducted in May 2023, using Living Evidence on COVID-19 (COAP) and Scopus. Articles were identified and selected through a s

BACKGROUND: A number of studies have detected relationships between weather and diarrhea. Few have investigated associations with specific enteric pathogens. Understanding pathogen-specific relationships with weather is crucial to inform public health in low-resource settings that are especially vulnerable to climate change.
OBJECTIVES: Our objectives were to identify weather and environmental risk factors associated with diarrhea and enteropathogen prevalence in young children in rural Bangladesh, a population with high diarrheal disease burden and vulnerability to weather shifts under clima

ABSTRACT: Fresh cheeses and cream are important garnishes of traditional Mexican food, often purchased at street or itinerant open markets or tianguis. However, there is scarce information regarding the microbiological quality of cheeses and cream sold in tianguis. For 2 years, three dairy stalls from three tianguis in Mexico City were visited once each season, trading practices were registered, and 96 dairy products were purchased. In total 72 fresh pasteurized cheeses that were hand-cut to order (24 Panela, 24 Canasto, and 24 Doble Crema) and 24 unpasteurized Crema de Rancho samples were col

Shigella spp. and entero-invasive Escherichia coli (EIEC) can cause mild diarrhea to dysentery. In Netherlands, although shigellosis is a notifiable disease, there is no laboratory surveillance for Shigella spp. and EIEC in place. Consequently, the population structure for circulating Shigella spp. and EIEC isolates is not known. This study describes the phenotypic and serological characteristics, the phenotypic and genetic antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profiles, the virulence gene profiles, the classic multi-locus sequence types (MLST) and core genome (cg)MLST types, and the epidemiology of

Diarrhea is a leading cause of antibiotic consumption among children in low- and middle-income countries. While vaccines may prevent diarrhea infections for which children often receive antibiotics, the contribution of individual enteropathogens to antibiotic use is minimally understood. We used data from the Global Enteric Multicenter Study (GEMS) to estimate pathogen-specific incidence of antibiotic-treated diarrhea among children under five years old residing in six countries of sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia before rotavirus vaccine implementation. GEMS was an age-stratified, individual

BACKGROUND: Atypical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (aEPEC) are one of the most frequent intestinal E. coli pathotypes isolated from diarrheal patients in Brazil. Isolates of aEPEC contain the locus of enterocyte effacement, but lack the genes of the bundle-forming pilus of typical EPEC, and the Shiga toxin of enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC). The objective of this study was to evaluate the phylogeny and the gene content of Brazilian aEPEC genomes compared to a global aEPEC collection.
METHODOLOGY: Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-based phylogenomic analysis was used to compare 106 seq

The O157:H7 (EcO157) epidemiology of Shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) in cattle is complex, and myths about pre-harvest control are perpetuated. The objectives of this project were to identify perpetuated misinformation and inform four audiences about evidence-based risks and pre-harvest control of EcO157 by addressing: (i) EcO157 epidemiology and pre-harvest control; (ii) how food safety policy is created; and (iii) how to present accurate information about EcO157. An environmental scan using a daily Internet search helped identify themes for education. A literature review of pre
