INTRODUCTION: Extended Spectrum β-lactamase (ESBLs) and/or carbapenemases producing Enterobacterales present a significant challenge in treating urinary tract infections (UTIs). Carbapenems, once considered last-resort antibiotics, are now threatened by the emergence of carbapenem-resistant strains.
METHODS: A total of 181 Enterobacterales were collected from (231) urine positive samples of community-acquired (CA) and hospital-acquired (HA) UTI patients from the Urology Department of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) Karachi, Pakistan, between January and June 2022. Antimicrobial susc

Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) is a toxin generally produced by community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) that is cytotoxic to neutrophils. USA300 is a virulent epidemic PVL-producing MRSA clone; it is increasing. Recently, ΨUSA300, a deleted mutant of USA300, has been identified in Japan. However, reports on the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of PVL-producing MRSA strains, including USA300 and ΨUSA300, remain limited. We included 65 patients who visited our dermatology clinic between January 2020 and May 2024 with skin and soft tissue infections

INTRODUCTION: The human gut microbiome harbors millions of bacterial species, including opportunistic pathogens, and this microbial community is exposed to antimicrobial agents present in food, the external environment, or drugs. Thus, it increases the risk of commensals being enriched with resistant genes, which may get even transmitted to opportunistic pathogens often with the help of mobile genetic elements. There is limited information about the current burden of resistant genes in the healthy gut microbiome of the Indian population, the latter is not only the largest in the world but is a

Pediatric meningitis is a global health problem, with insufficiently known pathogens and antibiotic resistance (AMR) especially in low-resource settings. Here, we sought to uncover the virulence and AMR of pathogens associated with infant meningitis, treated with ceftriaxone, in Kampala, Uganda. In a bid to isolate Klebsiella oxytoca, we coincidentally recovered a co-culture and challenged it with antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) on a panel of 14 antibiotics. We then combined metagenome binning with antiSMASH/PRISM genome mining to unveil the pathogens, their virulence and molecular tar

Listeria monocytogenes, a foodborne pathogen, exhibits high adaptability to adverse environmental conditions and is common in the food industry, especially in ready-to-eat foods. L. monocytogenes strains pose food safety challenges due to their ability to form biofilms, increased resistance to disinfectants, and long-term persistence in the environment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence and genetic diversity of L. monocytogenes in food and related environmental products collected from 2014 to 2022 and assess antibiotic susceptibility and biofilm formation abilities. Aquaculture environments can be hotspots for resistance genes through the surrounding environment. Our objective was to study the resistome, virulome and mobilome of Gram-negative bacteria isolated in seabream and bivalve molluscs, using a WGS approach. Sixty-six Gram-negative strains (Aeromonadaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, Hafniaceae, Morganellaceae, Pseudomonadaceae, Shewanellaceae, Vibrionaceae, and Yersiniaceae families) were selected for genomic characterization. The species and MLST were determined, and antibiotic/disinfectants/heavy metals resistance genes, virulence determinants, MGE, and

BACKGROUND: Complicated urinary tract infection (cUTI) is common among hospitalized patients. Though carbapenems are an effective treatment in the face of rising resistance, overuse drives carbapenem resistance (CR). We hypothesized that resistance to routinely used antimicrobials is common, and, despite frequent use of carbapenems, associated with an increased risk of inappropriate empiric treatment (IET), which in turn worsens clinical outcomes.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients hospitalized with a culture-positive non-CR cUTI. Triple resistance (TR) was defined

Pantoea agglomerans is a Gram-negative facultative anaerobic bacillus causing a wide range of opportunistic infections in humans including septicemia, pneumonia, septic arthritis, wound infections and meningitis. To date, the determinants of virulence, antibiotic resistance, metabolic features conferring survival and host-associated pathogenic potential of this bacterium remain largely underexplored. In this study, we sequenced and assembled the whole-genome of P. agglomerans KM1 isolated from kimchi in South Korea. The genome contained one circular chromosome of 4,039,945 bp, 3 mega plasmids,

DESCRIPTION: Antimicrobial overuse is a major health care issue that contributes to antibiotic resistance. Such overuse includes unnecessarily long durations of antibiotic therapy in patients with common bacterial infections, such as acute bronchitis with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbation, community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), urinary tract infections (UTIs), and cellulitis. This article describes best practices for prescribing appropriate and short-duration antibiotic therapy for patients presenting with these infections.
METHODS: The authors conducted a narrative liter

The extensively drug-resistant NDM-1-producing Klebsiella quasipneumoniae subsp. quasipneumoniae M17277 (Kqsq-M17277) was only susceptible to colistin and fosfomycin. Whole genome sequencing of Kqsq-M17277 was performed through Illumina (short reads) and Oxford Nanopore Technologies (long reads). Hybrid assembly of short and long reads rendered circular contigs of the Kqsq-M17277 chromosome and three plasmids of 477,340 (p17277A_477), 138,998 (p17277C_138, which harbored blaNDM-1) and 123,307 bp (p17277B_123). In silico analysis showed that p17277A_477 was not previously described, belonged to

Antimicrobial consumption in veterinary medicine has led to the spread of multi drug-resistance in clinically important bacteria, with the companion animals and their environment involved as emerging reservoirs. While CTX-M-15 and CMY-2 acquired β-lactamases have been widely detected in the bacterial population of companion and breeding animals in European area, DHA-1 enzymes have been rarely reported in veterinary medicine. The aim of the study was to characterize the Escherichia coli associated with mortality of a litter of Bulldog puppies in a breeding kennel located in Pesaro area, Central
