Transferring the Motor Branch of the Opponens Pollicis to the Terminal Division of the Deep Branch of the Ulnar Nerve for Pinch Reconstruction.

PURPOSE: With ulnar nerve injuries, paralysis of the first dorsal interosseous (FDI) and the adductor pollicis (ADP) muscles weakens pinch. The likelihood that these muscles will be reinnervated following ulnar nerve repair around the elbow is very low. To overcome this obstacle, we propose a more distal repair: transferring the opponens pollicis motor branch (OPB) to the terminal division of the deep branch of the ulnar nerve (TDDBUN). METHODS: We dissected 10 embalmed hands to study the anatomy of the thenar branches of the median nerve and TDDBUN. We also operated on 3 patients with recent

Bonobos protect and console friends and kin.

Post-conflict third-party affiliation has been reported to have different functional meanings, one of them being consolation. Here, we tested the main hypotheses that have been put forth to explain the presence of this phenomenon at a functional level in the bonobo: Self-Protection Hypothesis, Victim-Protection Hypothesis, Relationship-Repair or Substitute for Reconciliation Hypothesis, and Consolation Hypothesis. By analyzing the data collected over 10 years, we investigated what factors affected the distribution of both spontaneous third party affiliation (initiated by the bystander) and sol

Semiologic classification of psychogenic non epileptic seizures (PNES) based on video EEG analysis: do we need new classification systems?

PURPOSE: Different studies have described useful signs to diagnose psychogenic non-epileptic seizure (PNES). A few authors have tried to describe the semiologic groups among PNES patients; each group consisting of combination of features. But there is no uniformity of nomenclature among these studies. Our aim was to find out whether the objective classification system proposed by Hubsch et al. was useful and adequate to classify PNES patient population from South India. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed medical records and video EEG monitoring data of patients, recorded during 3 year perio

Social competence in young children with inflicted traumatic brain injury.

As infants develop skills that allow for increasing independence in social and cognitive domains, they acquire the ability to identify goals, sequence behaviors to carry out goals, and to flexibly use strategies for attaining goals in both social and independent play contexts. Little is known about how brain injury in young children may disrupt the precursors to such executive processes. In this study, we examined social and cognitive competence in 25 infants ages 3 to 23 months who sustained moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) secondary to physical abuse and in 22 healthy communit

Neuropathologies in transgenic mice expressing human immunodeficiency virus type 1 Tat protein under the regulation of the astrocyte-specific glial fibrillary acidic protein promoter and doxycycline.

The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) Tat protein is a key pathogenic factor in a variety of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)-associated disorders. A number of studies have documented the neurotoxic property of Tat protein, and Tat has therefore been proposed to contribute to AIDS-associated neurological diseases. Nevertheless, the bulk of these studies are performed in in vitro neuronal cultures without taking into account the intricate cell-cell interaction in the brain, or by injection of recombinant Tat protein into the brain, which may cause secondary stress or damage

TinyMyo: a Tiny Foundation Model for Flexible EMG Signal Processing at the Edge.

OBJECTIVE: Surface electromyography (EMG) is a non-invasive sensing modality used in biomechanics, rehabilitation, prosthetic control, and human-machine interfaces. However, achieving robust generalization across subjects, recording systems, and acquisition protocols remains challenging. While foundation models (FMs) are gaining traction for EMG, existing approaches remain limited to single downstream tasks and lack deployability. We address these limitations. METHODS: We present TinyMyo, a lightweight FM based on a Transformer encoder architecture. The model is pre-trained in a self-supervis

Neural Oscillatory Dynamics of Auditory-Motor Integration Deficit During Speech Articulatory Control in Post-Stroke Aphasia.

Fluent speech relies on sensorimotor integration for the detection and correction of auditory feedback errors via articulatory gesture adjustments. Individuals with post-stroke aphasia exhibit deficits in processing and compensating for errors in their own speech feedback, yet the neural bases of such impairments remain poorly understood. This study used a formant-shifting auditory feedback alteration paradigm to examine the neural oscillatory dynamics of speech articulatory responses in post-stroke aphasia, with a focus on the contribution of frequency-specific activity patterns underlying er

Assessing the impact of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex on social communication in children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

INTRODUCTION: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by persistent difficulties in social communication and behavior regulation. Although behavioral and pharmacological interventions exist, many yield limited improvements in these core areas. Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), a non-invasive neuromodulation technique, has shown potential for enhancing social and cognitive functions in individuals with ASD. This study evaluated the impact of tDCS, applied over the Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex (DLPFC), on social communication and behavioral outcomes in children and adoles

High-strength, low-hysteresis PVA conductive hydrogel enabled by osmotic regulation for robotic hand sensors.

Conventional conductive hydrogels, despite their excellent electrical conductivity, generally suffer from poor mechanical strength, which significantly limits their applications in high-load dynamic environments. To address this challenge, this study innovatively proposes a bidirectional infiltration regulation mechanism, successfully developing a polyvinyl alcohol-based ionic conductive hydrogel (PVA-L) that combines high strength with low hysteresis characteristics. Using PVA as the matrix, a microcrystalline cross-linked network was constructed via DMSO-assisted freeze-thaw cycling. Short-t

Decoding kinematic information from beta-band motor rhythms of speech motor cortex: a methodological/analytic approach using concurrent speech movement tracking and magnetoencephalography.

INTRODUCTION: Articulography and functional neuroimaging are two major tools for studying the neurobiology of speech production. Until now, however, it has generally not been feasible to use both in the same experimental setup because of technical incompatibilities between the two methodologies. METHODS: Here we describe results from a novel articulography system dubbed Magneto-articulography for the Assessment of Speech Kinematics (MASK), which is technically compatible with magnetoencephalography (MEG) brain scanning systems. In the present paper we describe our methodological and analytic

Efficacy of a Self-Directed Video-Based Caregiver-Implemented Language Programme.

INTRODUCTION: Caregiver-implemented language programmes are effective for alleviating early language difficulties. This study examined the efficacy of a self-directed video-based caregiver-implement language programme in Chinese families. METHOD: This study consisted of two stages. In stage 1, 31 caregiver-child dyads (typically developing children) completed the training programme (group 1) in the form of six video-based training modules. In stage 2, 28 caregiver-child dyads (children with language difficulties) receiving active speech therapy were randomly assigned to the training (group 2)

Main determinants of the acceptance of COVID-19 control measures by the population: A first pilot survey at the University of Liege, Belgium.

In order to control the COVID-19 pandemic, barrier gestures were used to reduce the transmission of the virus within a community and avoid large peaks of infections with the risk of overwhelming the healthcare systems. The acceptability of these measures is the backbone of their successful implementation. However, population compliance with these measures within a community is uncertain, even when mandatory. At the beginning of the 2020-2021 academic year, the University of Liege complemented these measures, by organizing a weekly screening by saliva testing on a voluntary basis for all its wo

Impairment and Compensation in Dexterous Upper-Limb Function After Stroke. From the Direct Consequences of Pyramidal Tract Lesions to Behavioral Involvement of Both Upper-Limbs in Daily Activities.

Impairments in dexterous upper limb function are a significant cause of disability following stroke. While the physiological basis of movement deficits consequent to a lesion in the pyramidal tract is well demonstrated, specific mechanisms contributing to optimal recovery are less apparent. Various upper limb interventions (motor learning methods, neurostimulation techniques, robotics, virtual reality, and serious games) are associated with improvements in motor performance, but many patients continue to experience significant limitations with object handling in everyday activities. Exactly ho

Clinical features of sleep-related hypermotor epilepsy in relation to the seizure-onset zone: A review of 135 surgically treated cases.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep-related hypermotor epilepsy (SHE), formerly nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy, is characterized by abrupt and typically sleep-related seizures with motor patterns of variable complexity and duration. They seizures arise more frequently in the frontal lobe than in the extrafrontal regions but identifying the seizure onset-zone (SOZ) may be challenging. In this study, we aimed to describe the clinical features of both frontal and extrafrontal SHE, focusing on ictal semiologic patterns in order to increase diagnostic accuracy. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical fea

Learning from demonstration: Teaching a myoelectric prosthesis with an intact limb via reinforcement learning.

Prosthetic arms should restore and extend the capabilities of someone with an amputation. They should move naturally and be able to perform elegant, coordinated movements that approximate those of a biological arm. Despite these objectives, the control of modern-day prostheses is often nonintuitive and taxing. Existing devices and control approaches do not yet give users the ability to effect highly synergistic movements during their daily-life control of a prosthetic device. As a step towards improving the control of prosthetic arms and hands, we introduce an intuitive approach to training a

Lesion-symptom mapping of a complex figure copy task: A large-scale PCA study of the BCoS trial.

Complex figure copying is a commonly used neuropsychological test. Here we explored the neural basis of the factors underlying complex figure copying (CFC), using data from the Birmingham Cognitive Screen (BCoS) in a large group of sub-acute, ischemic stroke patients (239). We computed two analyses: in the first we assessed the contribution of co-morbid deficits (i.e. in gesture processing, object use, visual neglect, pictures naming and sustained attention) to the lesions associated with CFC. In a second analysis a Principle Component Analysis (PCA) was used to isolate different underlying ta

Are there distinct subtypes in Tourette syndrome? Pure-Tourette syndrome versus Tourette syndrome-plus, and simple versus complex tics.

This study addressed several questions relating to the core features of Tourette syndrome (TS) including in particular coprolalia (involuntary utterance of obscene words) and copropraxia (involuntary and inappropriate rude gesturing). A cohort of 400 TS patients was investigated. We observed that coprolalia occurred in 39% of the full cohort of 400 patients and copropraxia occurred in 20% of the cohort. Those with coprolalia had significantly higher Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) and Diagnostic Confidence Index (DCI) total scores and a significantly higher proportion also experienced c

Accuracy of transnasal cannulation and dilation of the maxillary ostium in cadavers with intact uncinates.

Despite the essential role played by the scapula in shoulder function, current concepts in shoulder training and treatment regularly neglect its contribution. The 'scapular dyskinesis' is an alteration of the normal scapular kinematics as part of scapulohumeral rhythm, which has been shown to be a nonspecific response to a host of proximal and distal shoulder injuries. The dyskinesis can react in many ways with shoulder motion and function to increase the dysfunction. Thoracic kyphosis, acromio-clavicular joint disorders, subacromial or internal impingement, instability or labral pathology can

[Dynamic of ideation and preparatory behavior in the suicidal act: concerning a standardised and qualitative methodology].

Suicidal risk factors are nowadays well known. We often detect many of these risk factors in clinical situations, but their interaction and their writing in the suicidal sequence are still largely unrecognized. Building on narratives from suicidal patients, the authors propose a method for investigating the upstream components of suicide in an attempt to understand how the risk factors and the state of the person interact and converge on the suicidal action better. The interview is divided into the following four sections. (1)The patient is invited to mentally go back to the hours immediately
