Urinary bag decontamination for long-term use: a systematic review.

A systematic review of research on urinary drainage bag decontamination methods was conducted to evaluate existing evidence for practice related to long-term urinary catheter users. Six trials were found that met inclusion criteria. In addition, 9 clinical practice guidelines about urinary catheter care from 3 English-speaking countries were examined. Two studies were of modest quality; they included a randomized trial of 54 persons in a rehabilitation hospital and a laboratory comparison of 5 decontamination products. Three other articles included in the review were case series. All were publ

Nurses' advice regarding sterile or clean urinary drainage bags for individuals with a long-term indwelling urinary catheter.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify, compare, and explore advice nurses give to community-dwelling long-term indwelling catheter users on the use of sterile or clean urinary drainage bags, and to obtain information that would inform the design of a larger-scale international survey. SUBJECTS AND SETTINGS: A survey was targeted to nurse members of the International Continence Society (n = 130). Respondents (n = 28; 21.5%) included nurses from Australia, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States, who specialized in managing incontinence. METHODS: Th

Incontinence-associated dermatitis: consensus statements, evidence-based guidelines for prevention and treatment, and current challenges.

In 2010, an international consensus conference was held to review current evidence regarding the pathology, prevention, and management of incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD). The results of this literature review were published in a previous issue of this Journal. This article summarizes key consensus statements agreed upon by the panelists, evidence-based guidelines for prevention and management of IAD, and a discussion of the major challenges currently faced by clinicians caring for these patients. The panelists concur that IAD is clinically and pathologically distinct from pressure ulc

Use of high-frequency ultrasound to detect heel pressure injury in elders.

PURPOSE: To examine the usefulness of high-frequency ultrasound (HFU) to detect heel pressure injury in geriatric medical patients, to compare the prevalence rates of visualized pressure ulcers with the prevalence of hidden injury, and to determine whether HFU could assist in predicting the development of heel pressure injury. SUBJECTS AND SETTING: The sample comprised 100 medical patients who were aged 65 years or older, had a Braden Scale score of 10 to 17, and remained hospitalized 28 days or less. Participants had at least 1 heel free of visible pressure injury. The study setting was a 52

Peer-to-peer nursing rounds and hospital-acquired pressure ulcer prevalence in a surgical intensive care unit: a quality improvement project.

We conducted a quality improvement project in order to evaluate the effect of nurse-to-nurse bedside "rounding" as a strategy to decrease hospital-acquired pressure ulcers (HAPU) in a surgical intensive care unit. We instituted weekly peer-to-peer bedside skin rounds in a 17-bed surgical intensive care unit. Two nurses were identified as skin champions and trained by the hospital's certified WOC nurse to conduct skin rounds. The skin champion nurses conducted weekly peer-to-peer rounds that included discussions about key elements of our patients' skin status including current Braden Scale for

Prophylactic dressing application to reduce pressure ulcer formation in cardiac surgery patients.

PURPOSE: The study was designed to determine if application of a self-adherent silicone border foam dressing would reduce pressure ulcer incidence when compared to standard preventive interventions among patients managed in a cardiac surgery intensive care unit (CSICU). SUBJECTS AND SETTING: One hundred consecutive patients in the CSICU at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond participated in the study. Fifteen were subsequently excluded due to incomplete data or failure to remain in the CSICU for at least 48 hours. Of the 100 subjects consecutively enrolled, 56 subjects

Air-fluidized therapy in patients with suspected deep tissue injury: a case series.

PURPOSE: The evolution of suspected deep tissue injuries from an initial purple bruise to a significant stage III or IV pressure ulcer may be rapid, even with optimal treatment. This case series describes our experience with air-fluidized therapy (AFT) placed upon discovery of suspected deep tissue injury (sDTI) in an acute care setting. CASES: Five patients with 10 sDTIs were placed on AFT within 12 hours of sDTI diagnosis and evaluated for an average of 9 days. Patients were included in the series if they met the height and weight range of the bed and presented with, or developed an sDTI. S

The role of certified foot and nail care nurses in the prevention of lower extremity amputation.

The primary purpose of this article is to outline the role, opportunities, and benefits of the certified foot and nail care nurse (CFCN). Current demographic trends toward an aging population and associated health issues such as diabetes mellitus, arthritis, peripheral arterial disease, dementia, and loss of visual acuity hinder self-care of the feet and nails. The resulting foot and nail care needs create opportunities for CFCN to promote health and prevent adverse outcomes such as infection and limb loss. Routine foot and nail assessment, clinically appropriate care, and individualized patie
