INTRODUCTION: The performance of pediatric tympanoplasty is a matter of controversy in the literature, varying from 35 to 94%. Several authors argue that the performance of tympanoplasty should be delayed until 6-8 years old or even after 10 years old.
OBJECTIVES: To analyze the results of type I tympanoplasty in pediatric age and to identify possible prognostic factors.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective study of children undergoing type I tympanoplasty (Portmann's classification) between January 2012 and December 2018 in our hospital. The following variables were analyzed: age, gender, et

BACKGROUND: Bone conduction implants based on abutment-driven acoustic transmission result in good hearing outcomes; however, skin complications impact the quality of life (QOL) and possibly the viability of the device for many patients. The transcutaneous magnetic Baha® Attract technology was developed with the goal of minimising skin complications.
OBJECTIVES: To analyse surgical, auditory and QOL outcomes for patients implanted with the Baha® Attract.
DESIGN: Prospective multicentre cohort study.
SETTING: Four French tertiary referral centres.
PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-two patients implanted

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the experiences and outcomes of patients who underwent surgical repair of a perilymph fistula in Norfolk, UK.
METHODS: The study involved a retrospective questionnaire-based patient survey and case note review of patients who had undergone tympanotomy and perilymph fistula repair between 1998 and 2012 in two district general hospitals.
RESULTS: Fourteen patients underwent 20 procedures, of whom 7 completed the pre- and post-operative Vertigo Symptom Scale. In five patients, there was no obvious precipitating cause. Perilymph fistula was precipitated by n

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To describe the incidence, pattern, and course of postoperative enhancement within the operative bed using serial gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) following vestibular schwannoma (VS) resection and to identify clinical and radiologic variables associated with recurrence.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
METHODS: All patients who underwent microsurgical resection of VS between January 2000 and January 2010 at a single tertiary referral center were reviewed. Postoperative enhancement patterns were characterized on serial MRI studies. Clinical

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To compare preoperative computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings to the clinical features in patients with middle ear cholesteatoma with labyrinthine fistulae.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series.
METHODS: Twenty-eight patients who underwent surgery for middle ear cholesteatoma with one or more labyrinthine fistulae confirmed by CT were studied. Preoperative imaging analysis was performed using three-dimensional fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (3D-FLAIR) MRI. Fistula size measured by CT and the signal intensity ratio (SIR) between

OBJECTIVE: Otologists face many disadvantages after extensive mastoid drilling and canal wall down technique in cholesteatoma surgery. Mastoid and epitympanic cavity obliterations or reconstructions after canal wall down procedure using bioactive glass seem to be an interesting solution to overcome some of these disadvantages. Bioactive glass offers many benefits including the availability when there are no sufficient autologous materials for obliteration, its antibacterial activity in chronic infected ear and decreasing the recidivism of cholesteatoma. The objective of this study is to evalua

We conducted a retrospective chart review to characterize the outcomes of 12 patients-9 men and 3 women, aged 21 to 79 years (mean: 49)-who had been treated at our tertiary care center for acute bacterial meningitis caused by acute otitis media (ABMAO). Fever was the most common presenting sign/symptom, observed in 8 patients, followed by otalgia, neck stiffness, headache, and confusion. An opaque and bulging tympanic membrane was observed in 8 patients. Cultures were positive for Streptococcus pneumoniae in the cerebrospinal fluid, ear, and blood in 7, 5, and 3 patients, respectively. Immedia

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate whether chronic otitis media (COM) may cause inner ear damages or middle ear surgery may improve this damage with regard to sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and tinnitus and dizziness-related disability.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: An observational prospective study was performed on a series of 65 patients (41 males, 24 females; mean age 26.4±12.6; range 11 to 62 years) who were diagnosed with COM and were scheduled for surgical intervention at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology of the Haydarpasa Numune Education and Research Hospital. OBJECTIVE: To compare the patients who underwent surgery for congenital aural atresia (CAA) with congenital aural stenosis (CAS) for the stability of hearing results and complications during long-term follow-up.
DESIGN: Retrospective review.
STUDY SAMPLE: Seventy-five CAA patients and fifty CAS patients who underwent congenital meatoplasty with canalplasty and tympanoplasty between 2007 and 2012.
RESULTS: Paired comparison analyses detected no significant difference in preoperative ABG but significant changes in postoperative ABG, ΔABG, the number of ABG < 30 dB and ABG < 10 dB between CAA

OBJECTIVES: The facial nerve usually occupies the oval window area in patients with oval window atresia. During exploration, if the facial nerve is discovered to lie in the oval window area, this is usually regarded as a contraindication for further surgical intervention. The aim of the present paper is to demonstrate the preoperative pathognomonic radiological sign and describe a new surgical approach for this difficult situation.
METHODS: 3 patients and 4 ears were operated due to conductive hearing loss by the same surgeon in a tertiary referral center. Their clinical presentation, radiolo

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To identify clinical characteristics of pediatric superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) and explore suitable options of management.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review.
METHODS: The study comprised 10 patients with auditory and/or vestibular symptoms suspicious for SSCD. One patient pursued care at another institution, and two did not return for follow-up. Subsequently, seven patients (11 ears, 6 females and 1 male, aged 5-11 years) were included. Patients were evaluated using high-resolution temporal bone computed tomography. OBJECTIVE: Complex medical decision making obligates tradeoff assessments among treatment outcomes expectations, but an accessible tool to perform the necessary analysis is conspicuously absent. We aimed to demonstrate methodology and feasibility of adapting conjoint analysis for mapping clinical outcomes expectations to treatment decisions in vestibular schwannoma (VS) management.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of mivacurium-based partial neuromuscular blockade on facial nerve monitoring during otologic surgery.
METHODS: Forty-three patients scheduled for elective otologic surgery (mastoidectomy with and without tympanoplasty) participated in the study. After induction with propofol 2-3 mg x kg(-1), remifentanil 1 microg x kg(-1) and mivacurium 0.2 mg x kg(-1), anesthesi
