Study of the expression of CD68+ macrophages and CD8+ T cells in human granulomas and periapical cysts.

In the periapex, the interaction among inflammatory cells and microorganisms and their products results both in specific and nonspecific immune responses. Many studies have reported quantitative analysis of the immunocompetent cells in periapical lesions, but the exact ratio of these cells in cysts and granulomas remains unknown. In the present study, we undertook a quantitative analysis of CD68+ cells and CD8+ T cells in human periapical granulomas and cysts. Immunoperoxidase staining revealed that CD68+ cells were present in both lesions, with no statistically significant difference, mainly

Expression of keratinocyte growth factor in periapical lesions.

The epithelial proliferation associated with inflammatory periapical lesions and with periapical cyst formation represents an interesting but poorly understood pathological change. Keratinocyte growth factor (KGF) is a recently identified growth factor that is produced by stromal fibroblasts and acts specifically to stimulate epithelial growth and differentiation. To investigate its possible role in the activation of the normally quiescent rests of Malassez, we examined the expression of KGF by in situ hybridization of sections of normal periodontal ligament (PDL) and of 12 periapical granulom

Detection and quantification of mast cell, vascular endothelial growth factor, and microvessel density in human inflammatory periapical cysts and granulomas.

AIM: To identify and quantify mast cell (MC), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression and microvessel density (MVD) in human periapical cysts and granulomas. METHODOLOGY: Archived samples of cysts (n = 40) and granulomas (n = 28) were sectioned and stained with toluidine blue. MCs were identified and counted. Immunohistochemical reactions were employed to evaluate the tissue expression of VEGF and vessels. MVD was estimated by determining the areas of tissue labelled with CD31 antibody. The data were analysed using the Mann-Whitney test (P < 0.05). RESULTS: MCs were observed in

Indications for surgical endodontics and findings of an audit into referrals.

UNLABELLED: Peri-radicular surgery is a valuable treatment modality allowing thorough treatment of chronic infection of the peri-radicular tissues. It is important that this treatment option is prescribed appropriately and steps are taken to help improve outcomes of surgery. We discuss the indications for peri-radicular surgery, considerations when planning treatment for teeth where orthograde endodontics has failed and present the findings of an audit into the appropriateness of referrals for peri-radicular surgery to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at a District General Hosp

Assessment of preclinical learning on oral surgery using three instructional strategies.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate three learning methods for teaching basic oral surgical skills. Thirty predoctoral dental students without any surgical knowledge or previous surgical experience were divided into three groups (n=10 each) according to instructional strategy: Group 1, active learning; Group 2, text reading only; and Group 3, text reading and video demonstration. After instruction, the apprentices were allowed to practice incision, dissection, and suture maneuvers in a bench learning model. During the students' performance, a structured practice evaluation test t

Apical capping as a new technique for retrograde treatment of an infected root apex: introduction and first results.

INTRODUCTION: The success rate of surgical retrograde treatment of an infected root apex is limited by the existence of infected side canals which are not treatable by conventional retrograde preparation and filling techniques. This experimental study introduces a new technique of retrograde apex preparation followed by covering the apex with a titanium cap. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 10 extracted canines, retrograde circular preparation of the root apex was performed using a new ultrasonic preparation tip and a high-power ultrasound machine. The prepared stump was covered by a titanium cap fix

Favorable response of an extensive periapical lesion to root canal treatment.

This article presents non-surgical resolution of an extensive periapical lesion of endodontic origin associated with the maxillary left lateral incisor. Clinical examination revealed an asymptomatic bony hard swelling confined to the palate, while radiographic analysis showed a lesion measuring 22 mm in diameter and nearly 389 mm(2) in area. Through apical patency, 4 ml of intracanal exudate was drained. After thorough biomechanical preparation, a calcium hydroxide/CPMC root canal dressing was applied and periodically renewed for 11 months. The exudate was eliminated at treatment onset and sig

Validating the management paradigm for pediatric spinal aneurysmal bone cysts to optimize long-term outcomes: an institutional experience.

BACKGROUND: The optimal clinical management and outcomes of rare pediatric spinal aneurysmal bone cysts (spABC) is largely anecdotal. Current practice is based on bigger adult series, although given the disparities in spine growth of adults versus children, what impact this difference may have on long-term outcomes has yet to be substantiated. Correspondingly, the aim of this study was to describe the clinical course of all pediatric spABC cases managed at our institution to better understand this. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of all pediatric spABC cases presenting to our institutio

Panoramic radiographic examination: a survey of 271 edentulous patients.

The aim of this study was to quantify the frequency of positive radiographic findings in edentulous arches. Panoramic radiographs from 271 patients who were edentulous in one or both arches were evaluated for the presence of retained root fragments, impacted teeth, foreign bodies, radiolucencies, radiopacities, mental foramina at or near the crest of the residual alveolar ridge, and maxillary sinus proximity to the crest of the residual alveolar ridge. One or more of these radiographic observations were found in 51.7% of the examined films. The most frequent finding (30.6%) was close approxima

Ridge preservation utilizing an acellular dermal allograft and demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft: Part I. A report of 2 cases.

Alveolar ridge deformities are usually the result of trauma, periodontal disease, surgical insult, or developmental defects. Preventing ridge collapse with the extraction of maxillary anterior teeth is vital to an esthetic restorative result. Several techniques are available to prevent ridge collapse. In these case presentations, ridge preservation was achieved utilizing an acellular dermal matrix as a barrier membrane with a demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft. This report demonstrated an acceptable esthetic result with no loss of ridge height or width. Soft tissue dimensions were also

Degenerative symptomatic spinal synovial cysts: Clinical presentation and functional outcome.

Spinal synovial cysts (SSC) are a rare but important differential diagnosis for degenerative or space-occupying spinal lesions. There is controversy about the most beneficial treatment, which can be conservative or surgical. We provide a review of our surgical data for purposes of quality assessment and improvement. 5313 patients with surgically treated degenerative spinal diseases were analyzed retrospectively. The incidence of SSC was 1.14%. 61 patients (31 women, 30 men; mean age 65.3 years) with SSC were included in this study. The charts, surgical reports, and radiographic data were revie
