The principal objective of this study was to investigate the strengthened remediation effect and relevant mechanism of P. aeruginosa on ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) for soil contaminated by Cu-Pb-Cd compound heavy metals. The results showed that the complex heavy metals' contamination had remarkable inhibiting effect on the growth of plants (P < 0.01), and the biomass of ryegrass's stem and leaves declined by 28.2%, while that of roots decreased by 34.7% after 45 days. The inoculation of P. aeruginosa promoted the growth of ryegrass in polluted soil, in which the biomass recovered to the

Diverse pathogenic fungi secrete extracellular vesicles (EV) that contain macromolecules, including virulence factors that can modulate the host immune response. We recently demonstrated that the binding of monoclonal antibodies (mAb) modulates how Histoplasma capsulatum load and releases its extracellular vesicles (EV). In the present paper, we addressed a concentration-dependent impact on the fungus' EV loading and release with different mAb, as well as the pathophysiological role of these EV during the host-pathogen interaction. We found that the mAbs differentially regulate EV content in c

Helicobacter pylori infects ~50% of the world population, causing chronic gastritis and other forms of cellular damage. The present study assessed the influence of H. pylori on the mRNA expression levels of nuclear factor-κB1 (NFKB1), p38α and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in human gastric mucosa in a southern Brazilian population. Human gastric tissue was collected by upper endoscopy and H. pylori diagnosis was performed using a rapid urease test and histological analysis. Total RNA was extracted and purified for subsequent cDNA synthesis and analysis by quantitative polymerase chain reacti

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive brain disorder which occurs due to lower levels of acetylcholine (ACh) neurotransmitters, and results in a gradual decline in memory and other cognitive processes. Acetycholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) are considered to be primary regulators of the ACh levels in the brain. Evidence shows that AChE activity decreases in AD, while activity of BChE does not change or even elevate in advanced AD, which suggests a key involvement of BChE in ACh hydrolysis during AD symptoms. Therefore, inhibiting the activity of BChE may be an effectiv

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological investigations have indicated that Helicobacter pylori induces inflammation in the gastric mucosa regulated by several interleukins. The genes IL1B and IL8 are suggested as key factors in determining the risk of gastritis. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the association of gene polymorphism of interleukin-1 and interleukin-8 with chronic gastrits in H. pylori infected patients. A total of 60 patients underwent endoscopic procedure. Biopsy samples were collected for urease test, histopathological and molecular exams. The DNA of theses samples was extracted for

Urinary tract infections constitute a large proportion of nosocomial infections, and the urinary catheter is the most important predisposing factor. Encrustation induced by urease-producing uropathogens like Proteus mirabilis causes further complications. In the present work, a strategy for controllable and sustained release of silver over several weeks has been developed for combating bacterial infection and encrustation in urinary devices. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were first immobilized on polydopamine (PDA) pre-treated silicone catheter surface and this was followed by another PDA coati

Anacardic acid (AA) is a bioactive phytochemical found in nutshell of Anacardium occidentale. Chemically, it is a mixture of several closely related organic compounds, each consisting of salicylic acid substituted with an alkyl chain. The traditional Ayurveda depicts nutshell oil as a medicinal remedy for alexeritic, amebicidal, gingivitis, malaria and syphilitic ulcers. However, the enduring research and emerging evidence suggests that AA could be a potent target molecule with bactericide, fungicide, insecticide, anti-termite and molluscicide properties and as a therapeutic agent in the treat

This paper shows analysis of the association of the 802C>T polymorphism of the NOD2/CARD15 gene with the occurrence of the chronic inflammation of the gastric mucosa associated with the Helicobacter pylori infections, development of intestinal metaplasia and dysplasia and, in the result of this, gastric cancer. Genomic DNA samples were extracted from paraffin blocks of gastric mucosal biopsies and from peripheral blood. H. pylori infection was confirmed by histological analysis and urease test. Pyrosequencing of 802C>T polymorphism of the NOD2/CARD15 gene was performed for H. pylori infected p

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) successfully resides in the human stomach in highly acidic conditions, causing a variety of gastroduodenal lesions, including gastric ulcer, gastric cancer and MALT lymphoma. For acid acclimation of H. pylori, two types of enzymes, urease and carbonic anhydrase (CA), play a central role. They cooperatively function to maintain neutral pH in the bacterial cytoplasm and periplasm. The genome project of H. pylori identified two different classes of CA with different subcellular localization: a periplasmic alpha-class CA (hp alphaCA) and a cytoplasmic beta-class CA

BACKGROUND: Hyperplastic polyps are the most common polypoid lesions of the stomach. Rarely, they cause gastric outlet obstruction by prolapsing through the pyloric channel, when they arise in the prepyloric antrum.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 62-year-old woman presented with intermittent nausea and vomiting of 4 months duration. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a 30 mm prepyloric sessile polyp causing intermittent gastric outlet obstruction. Following submucosal injection of diluted adrenaline solution, the polyp was removed with a snare. Multiple biopsies were taken from the greater curva

Helicobacter pylori has been implicated in the etiology of peptic ulcer disease, chronic gastritis, gastric carcinoma, and gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. Although significant progress has been made in treating this infection with combinations of either antimicrobial agents or antimicrobial agents plus proton pump inhibitors, these antimicrobial-based treatments continue to be suboptimal. Over the past few years it has become increasingly recognized that direct mucosal immunization can induce protection from infection at mucosal surfaces. Therefore, prevention of H. pylori
