A Case of Duffy-Null-Associated Neutropenia in a Patient With Chronic Myeloid Leukemia.

Duffy-null-associated neutrophil count (DANC) refers to a below-normal absolute neutrophil count (ANC < 1.5 × 103/L), present most commonly in African American individuals. Neutropenia is a result of a lack of Fya and Fyb antigens on red blood cells. These patients do not have an increased risk of infection and may have an ANC < 1.5 × 103/L at baseline. This unique case presents Duffy-null-associated neutropenia in the setting of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). A 64-year-old African American female presented to the emergency department on May 17, 2021, for fatigue and was found to have a white

Effectiveness of different exercise interventions on depressive symptoms among college students: a network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Depression affects approximately 25% of college students globally. Physical exercise shows promise as a low-cost, high-adherence intervention for depression, but research comparing different exercise types is lacking. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of various exercise interventions in alleviating depressive symptoms among college students through a network meta-analysis, to inform targeted exercise prescriptions. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search of six databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, SCOPUS, and ScienceDirect) from their inception to

Prevalence of Asymptomatic Talar Bone Marrow Edema in Professional Ballet Dancers: Preliminary Data From a 2-Year Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Compared with symptomatic bone marrow edema (BME) associated with stress fractures, asymptomatic BME seen on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a phenomenon that has been described in high-level athletes and is thought to be related to bone adaptation to biomechanical loading unique to each sport. However, the prevalence, natural history, and management of these lesions remain poorly understood, particularly in dance, which places tremendous stress on the feet and ankles. PURPOSES/HYPOTHESIS: The purposes of this study were to (1) determine the prevalence of asymptomatic BME in t

BRCA1 and BRCA2 pathways and the risk of cancers other than breast or ovarian.

CONTEXT: Tendon abnormalities on imaging are commonly observed in individuals with Achilles tendinopathy. Those abnormalities can also be present in asymptomatic individuals, which is an important risk factor for developing tendon symptoms. Ballet dancers are particularly vulnerable due to the high loads placed on their Achilles tendons. Understanding the relationship between clinical measures and tendon abnormality is essential for this population. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the predictive value of clinical measures for identifying Achilles tendon abnormality in asymptomatic ballet dancers us

Psychological and neurological benefits of physical activity: impact on mental health, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease.

This review synthesizes current evidence on the psychological and neurological benefits of physical activity, with emphasis on mental health, Parkinson's disease (PD), and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Physical inactivity is increasingly recognized as a modifiable risk factor that may exacerbate neuroinflammatory and metabolic dysfunctions associated with these conditions. Structured exercise has been shown to activate muscle-brain signaling pathways, including neurotrophic factors (BDNF, IGF-1, VEGF), immune modulation (IL-6, IL-10), metabolic regulators (PGC-1α, SIRT1), and peripheral mediators

Use of reagent test kits and fentanyl test strips among electronic music festival attendees in Colorado: prevalence, barriers, and behavior in response to drug checking.

BACKGROUND: Polysubstance use is common at electronic dance music (EDM) events and hazards associated with polysubstance use may be exacerbated when people who use drugs are unaware of the contents of their drug sample. Reagent test kits (RTK) and fentanyl test strips (FTS) are two efficacious drug checking tools that people who use drugs might use to protect themselves from risks associated with contamination, adulteration, and misrepresentation of unregulated substances. In the current study, we aimed to (1) characterize the use of RTK and FTS among attendees of a 4-day music festival in Col

Evaluating the prevalence of eating disorder risk and low energy availability risk in collegiate athletes.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders and low energy availability independently and negatively impact eating behaviors and attitudes and overall health. Screening provides early identification of athletes suffering from these conditions, yet few studies have evaluated both simultaneously, and none have investigated eating disorder and low energy availability in the context of sex or sport type. This study determined the prevalence of eating disorder and low energy availability risk in collegiate athletes at a large National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 university and the variation

ProAKAP4 as a protein marker of sperm quality: Insights from frozen-thawed ejaculated and epididymal sperm.

The AKAP4 protein is the most abundant protein of the sperm fibrous sheath. This protein is considered instrumental in regulating sperm flagellum motion and its precursor, proAKAP4, is considered a biomarker for sperm quality in different species. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the relationship of proAKAP4 concentration on feline sperm kinematic, morphology, and membrane integrity of cryopreserved ejaculated and epididymal sperm. A total of fifteen adult mixed breed male cats between 1 and 3 years of age, with a mean weight of 4.21 ± 0.55 kg were included in this study. The first step

A novel approach to treatment for chronic avulsion fracture of the ischial tuberosity in three adolescent athletes: a case series.

BACKGROUND AND INCIDENCE: Ischial tuberosity fracture and its associated complications are an under recognized diagnosis in the adolescent athlete. Apophyseal injuries of the pelvis in the skeletally immature athlete can occur in multiple locations but are most common at the ischial tuberosity, affecting males more commonly than females. DESCRIPTION OF INJURY AND CURRENT MANAGEMENT: The most common cause of ischial tuberosity avulsion fracture is a quick eccentric load to the proximal hamstrings, occurring with kicking as in soccer, football, or dance. Signs and symptoms are similar to a prox
